      • Analyzing the technical quality of a rubric used to assess science fair projects

Potter, Melissa C University of Oregon 2009 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247375

Presenting science fair projects gave students an opportunity to complete a performance assessment that comprised a meaningful task focused on process and subject to standards-based assessment. Students presented science inquiry and engineering design projects to judges at a regional science fair. The judges used the domains of the Potter Rubrics to assess the students' work and assigned a Quality score to each project. Using multiple regression, this study found that the mean scores on the Methods and Analysis domains predicted the mean Quality scores. Analyzing the technical quality of the Potter Rubrics addressed some of the measurement and generalizability concerns about performance assessments. Recommendations for future research and implications for practice were examined.

      • School level perceptions of school quality: A study in Mamou, Guinea, West Africa

Potter, Kristen Edgar Columbia University Teachers College 2001 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247343

The purpose of this dissertation was to examine perceptions of school quality among stakeholders at the school level in the prefecture of Mamou, Guinea, West Africa. The principal material for this thesis was gathered during field research conducted from 1998 to 2000. Participants included 136 stakeholders from 2 urban and 3 rural school sites, divided into the following groups: school directors, teachers, female parents, male parents, female students, and male students. Additionally, 7 national education officials were interviewed. Data sources included school observations, focus group interviews, and written exercises. In-depth descriptions of school quality were developed for each of the stakeholder groups, and an analysis of preferred elements of school quality across groups and between urban and rural sites was presented. Research revealed that aspects of school quality that were considered important to school level stakeholders and to education officials spanned a comprehensive framework of education reform areas including: content, delivery system, method, assessment, finance, and governance. School-level stakeholders defined school quality in concrete and tangible terms, similar in substance to definitions voiced among education officials. The distinction between urban and rural was largely one of priority. Urban stakeholders focused on teacher training, textbooks, and students/class. Rural stakeholder concerns were milieu specific and relational: teacher attendance, teacher payment, school supplies and connections between schools and communities. Stakeholders also noted the importance of more and better educational infrastructure and more qualified teachers, indicating an extension of access issues into the realm of educational quality. Additional analysis of stakeholder data revealed 3 overarching school level issues. First, the historic chasm between schools and communities continued to be detrimental to relationships between teachers and community members. Second, parents lacked clear understanding of what children gain from an education. Parents considered education primarily part of a proper upbringing. Teachers and students, having direct experience with the teaching learning process, considered learning to read, write and calculate a primary goal of education. Finally, female students were not supported academically outside the school. Consequently, female students depended on orderly, disciplined classrooms for their academic success and preferred to keep parents and families separate from their school experiences.

      • Training Educators to Implement Mindfulness-Based Interventions: Evaluating the Effects of In-Service and Coaching on Intervention Fidelity

Potter, Laura M ProQuest Dissertations & Theses University of Minn 2018 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247343

School-based interventions that utilize mindfulness and yoga exercises to build students' self-regulation skills have become increasingly popular, both in practice and in published literature. Yet little information has been gathered about how t.

      • Kernel selection for convergence and efficiency in Markov Chain Monte Carlo

Potter, Christopher C.J Carnegie Mellon University 2013 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247343

Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) is a technique for sampling from a target probability distribution, and has risen in importance as faster computing hardware has made possible the exploration of hitherto difficult distributions. Unfortunately, this powerful technique is often misapplied by poor selection of transition kernel for the Markov chain that is generated by the simulation. Some kernels are used without being checked against the convergence requirements for MCMC (total balance and ergodicity), but in this work we prove the existence of a simple proxy for total balance that is not as demanding as detailed balance, the most widely used standard. We show that, for discrete-state MCMC, that if a transition kernel is equivalent when it is "reversed" and applied to data which is also "reversed", then it satisfies total balance. We go on to prove that the sequential single-variable update Metropolis kernel, where variables are simply updated in order, does indeed satisfy total balance for many discrete target distributions, such as the Ising model with uniform exchange constant. Also, two well-known papers by Gelman, Roberts, and Gilks (GRG)[1, 2] have proposed the application of the results of an interesting mathematical proof to the realistic optimization of Markov Chain Monte Carlo computer simulations. In particular, they advocated tuning the simulation parameters to select an acceptance ratio of 0.234. In this paper, we point out that although the proof is valid, its result's application to practical computations is not advisable, as the simulation algorithm considered in the proof is so inefficient that it produces very poor results under all circumstances. The algorithm used by Gelman, Roberts, and Gilks is also shown to introduce subtle time-dependent correlations into the simulation of intrinsically independent variables. These correlations are of particular interest since they will be present in all simulations that use multi-dimensional MCMC moves.

      • Contributions of executive functions to memory complaints among older women

Potter, Guy Glenn The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 2001 해외박사(DDOD)

        RANK : 247343

This study investigated the role of executive functions in predicting memory complaints among older adult women. Neuropsychological measures of executive functions and memory were administered to 99 healthy, community-dwelling, older adult women, along with a self-report inventory of memory complaints. Also included were self-report questionnaires for depression and anxiety, and a measure of intellectual functioning. Zero-order correlations revealed significant associations between memory complaints and measures of executive functioning, memory, depression, anxiety, and verbal intellect. Although there were significant zero-order correlations between executive functions and memory complaints, executive functions were not a significant predictor of memory complaints after controlling for memory, depression, anxiety, and estimated verbal intellect. Depression and anxiety, in fact, were the only significant predictors of memory complaints in this analysis. Post-hoc analysis was successful in identifying a combination of executive function measures that predicts memory complaints in the context of these competing variables. These findings suggest that while executive functions should be considered in assessing memory complaints among older adults, individual test sensitivity is an important selection criterion. These findings also highlight the role of emotional factors like depression and anxiety in memory complaints, and suggest that attention needs to be given to both neurocognitive and emotional factors when evaluating the etiology of self-reported memory problems.
