The overall motion sickness incidence applied to catamarans

Piscopo, Vincenzo,Scamardella, Antonio The Society of Naval Architects of Korea 2015 International Journal of Naval Architecture and Oc Vol.7 No.4

The Overall Motion Sickness Incidence is applied to the hull form optimization of a wave piercing high-speed catamaran vessel. Parametric hull modelling is applied to generate two families of derived hull forms, the former varying the prismatic coefficient and the position of longitudinal centre of buoyancy, the latter instead the demi-hull separation. Several heading angles are analysed in a seaway, considering all combinations of significant wave height and zero-crossing period under two operating scenarios. The optimum hull is generated and vertical accelerations at some critical points on main deck are compared with the parent ones. Finally a comparative analysis with the results obtained for a similarly sized monohull passenger ship is carried out, in order to quantify, by the OMSI, the relative goodness in terms of wellness onboard of monohulls and catamarans, as a function of sea states and operating scenarios.

Comparative analysis among deterministic and stochastic collision damage models for oil tanker and bulk carrier reliability

Campanile, A.,Piscopo, V.,Scamardella, A. The Society of Naval Architects of Korea 2018 International Journal of Naval Architecture and Oc Vol.10 No.1

The incidence of collision damage models on oil tanker and bulk carrier reliability is investigated considering the IACS deterministic model against GOALDS/IMO database statistics for collision events, substantiating the probabilistic model. Statistical properties of hull girder residual strength are determined by Monte Carlo simulation, based on random generation of damage dimensions and a modified form of incremental-iterative method, to account for neutral axis rotation and equilibrium of horizontal bending moment, due to cross-section asymmetry after collision events. Reliability analysis is performed, to investigate the incidence of collision penetration depth and height statistical properties on hull girder sagging/hogging failure probabilities. Besides, the incidence of corrosion on hull girder residual strength and reliability is also discussed, focussing on gross, hull girder net and local net scantlings, respectively. The ISSC double hull oil tanker and single side bulk carrier, assumed as test cases in the ISSC 2012 report, are taken as reference ships.

A Free Water Protocol in Inpatient Rehabilitation: Feasibility and Care Outcomes

        Stephanie Scibilia,A.M. Barrett,Christina Piscopo,Uri Adler,홍익표,Kimberly Hreha 대한작업치료학회 2020 대한작업치료학회지 Vol.28 No.2

Objectives: Free Water Protocols (FWPs) are implemented selectively because of mixed evidence on the benefitsassociated with their use. This retrospective study examines the implementation a long-standing clinicalprogram and descriptively reports rehabilitation and quality care outcomes. Methods: Data were collected over 6 years (n = 575). Inpatient rehabilitation setting. Variables included in thisstudy were age, medical diagnoses, rate of acute care hospital transfers, discharge destinations, length of timeon FWP. Results: Cohort consisted of older adults (M = 68.43, SD = 15.11), with diagnosis of stroke (60.2%), brain injury(19.1%), spinal cord injury (7.3%), cardiac (1%), orthopedics (5%), other (13.1%). Acute care hospital transfersoccurred in 6% as descriptively compared to national average (14%). Additionally, participants tolerated FWP fordays (M = 14.1, SD = 14.4) and most went home following rehabilitationDiscussion: This retrospective study concludes the feasibility of implementing a FWP in a rehabilitation facility andreports descriptive outcomes. Experimental research is required for conclusions to be made regardingeffectiveness of the FWP for dysphagia.

Physico-chemical and microbiological quality of ready-to-eat rocket (Eruca vesicaria (L.) Cav.) treated with organic acids during storage in dark and light conditions

        Angela Zappia,Alessandra De Bruno,Amalia Piscopo,Marco Poiana 한국식품과학회 2019 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.28 No.4

The effect of alternative dipping solutions tochlorinated water was studied on qualitative parameters ofready-to-eat rocket: sanitised tap water, 1% of citric acidsolution and a mixture of citric and ascorbic acids solution. After packaging in normal atmosphere, a monitoring oftotal bacterial count and physico-chemical parameters wascarried out to 14 storage days in dark and light storageconditions. The dark exposure of the rocket leaves contributedto preserve a lower microbiological growth and thegreen color: light presence highly influenced total bacterialcount and Hue angle (p\0.01). Treatments with acids canbe recommended to preserve antioxidant compounds andcolor leaves: this factor also influenced other studiedparameters as acidity, total bacterial count, and antioxidantactivity (p\0.01). The studied alternative dipping solutionsand the storage in darkness involved a better qualityof rocket up to 14 days of shelf life respect the commercialshelf life of 7 days.

The Impact of the Financial Crisis on Lifestyle Health Determinants Among Older Adults Living in the Mediterranean Region: The Multinational MEDIS Study (2005-2015)

        Alexandra Foscolou,Stefanos Tyrovolas,George Soulis,Anargiros Mariolis,Suzanne Piscopo,Giuseppe Valacchi,Foteini Anastasiou,Christos Lionis,Akis Zeimbekis,Josep-Antoni Tur,Vassiliki Bountziouka,Dimitr 대한예방의학회 2017 Journal of Preventive Medicine and Public Health Vol.50 No.1

Objectives: By the end of the 2000s, the economic situation in many European countries started to deteriorate, generating financial uncertainty, social insecurity and worse health status. The aim of the present study was to investigate how the recent financial crisis has affected the lifestyle health determinants and behaviours of older adults living in the Mediterranean islands. Methods: From 2005 to 2015, a population-based, multi-stage convenience sampling method was used to voluntarily enrol 2749 older adults (50% men) from 20 Mediterranean islands and the rural area of the Mani peninsula. Lifestyle status was evaluated as the cumulative score of four components (range, 0 to 6), that is, smoking habits, diet quality (MedDietScore), depression status (Geriatric Depression Scale) and physical activity. Results: Older Mediterranean people enrolled in the study from 2009 onwards showed social isolation and increased smoking, were more prone to depressive symptoms, and adopted less healthy dietary habits, as compared to their counterparts participating earlier in the study (p<0.05), irrespective of age, gender, several clinical characteristics, or socioeconomic status of the participants (an almost 50% adjusted increase in the lifestyle score from before 2009 to after 2009, p<0.001). Conclusions: A shift towards less healthy behaviours was noticeable after the economic crisis had commenced. Public health interventions should focus on older adults, particularly of lower socioeconomic levels, in order to effectively reduce the burden of cardiometabolic disease at the population level.
