Soils are porous materials with high shielding capability to attenuate gamma and X-rays. The disposal of radionuclides throughout the soil profile can expose the living organisms to ionizing radiation. Thus, studies aiming to analyze the shielding properties of the soils are of particular interest for radiation shielding. Investigations on evaluating the shielding capabilities of highly weathered soils are still scarce, meaning that additional research is necessary to check their efficiency to attenuate radiation. In this study, the radiation shielding properties of contrasting soils were evaluated. The radiation interaction parameters assessed were attenuation coefficients, mean free path, and half- and tenth-value layers. At low photon energies, the photoelectric absorption contribution to the attenuation coefficient predominated, while at intermediate and high photon energies, the incoherent scattering and pair production were the dominant effects. Soils with the highest densities presented the best shielding properties, regardless of their chemical compositions. Increases in the attenuation coefficient and decreases in shielding parameters of the soils were associated with increases in clay, Fe2O3, Al2O3, and TiO2 amounts. In addition, this paper provides a comprehensive description of the shielding properties of weathered soils showing the importance of their granulometric fractions and oxides to the attenuation of the radiation
Single-Stage Double-Buck Topologies with High Power Factor
Pires, Vitor Fernao,Silva, Jose Fernando The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2011 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.11 No.5
This paper presents two topologies for single-stage single-phase double-buck type PFC converters, designed to operate at high power factor, near sinusoidal input currents and adjustable output voltage. Unlike the known buck type PFC topologies, in which the output voltage is always lower than the maximum input voltage, the proposed converters can operate at output voltages higher than the ac input peak voltage. A reduced number of switches on the main path of the current are another characteristic of the two proposed topologies. To shape the input line currents, a fast and robust controller based on a sliding mode approach is proposed. This active non-linear control strategy, applied to these converters allows high quality input currents. A Proportional Integral (PI) controller is adopted to regulate the output voltage of the converters. This external voltage controller modulates the amplitude of the sinusoidal input current references. The performances of the presented rectifiers are verified with experimental results.
Leukocyte platelet-rich fibrin in endodontic microsurgery: a report of 2 cases
Pires Mariana Domingos,Martins Jorge N. R.,Baruwa Abayomi Omokeji,Pereira Beatriz,Ginjeira António 대한치과보존학회 2022 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.47 No.2
Endodontic microsurgery is a predictable treatment option when orthograde treatment or retreatment is unsuccessful or unfeasible. However, when there is a gross compromise of periapical bone, achievement of bone regeneration after the surgical procedure may be hampered. In such cases, the application of guided tissue regeneration principles, with adjunctive use of leukocyte platelet-rich fibrin to fill the bone defect as a bone substitute and as a membrane to cover the site, provides a cost-effective solution with the benefits of accelerated physiological healing and reduced post-surgical pain and discomfort. This case report presents 2 cases of endodontic microsurgery of the upper lateral incisors with loss of buccal cortical plate, where platelet-rich fibrin was successfully applied.

Background: Nausea and vomiting are frequent complications of anesthesia in the postoperative period. Acupuncture at the pericardium point 6 (PC6) is known to be effective in preventing postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). Objectives: The objective of the present study is to investigate the effects of acupuncture performed at the PC6 point in the prevention of PONV in women undergoing elective open hysterectomy under general inhalational anesthesia and to assess its association with plasma serotonin levels. Methods: 97 patients undergoing elective open hysterectomy were randomly divided into two groups: acupuncture group (bilateral acupuncture at PC6, n = 49), and a control group (no acupuncture, n = 48). All patients prophylactically received ondansetron and dexamethasone and, as rescue medication, metoclopramide in case of occurrence of PONV. The primary outcome evaluated was occurrence of nausea and vomiting within 24 hours after surgery. Serotonin plasma levels were measured before and after acupuncture prior to anesthesia induction. For the control group, the repeat measurement was performed 30 minutes after admission to the preoperative unit. Results: Acupuncture at PC6 significantly reduced the incidence of nausea (29.2% vs. 6.1%; p < 0.003), and the need of rescue medication (metoclopramide) (33.3% vs. 10.2%; p < 0.006), but not vomiting (4.2 vs. 4.1; p < 0.98). The plasma serotonin levels between control and acupuncture groups did not differ. Conclusion: This study shows that acupuncture at PC6 resulted in a lower incidence of postoperative nausea in patients undergoing hysterectomy.
Strange Foreigners We Are!: Identity Transits in Portuguese Immigration
Isabel Pires de LIMA 이화여자대학교 이화인문과학원 2012 탈경계인문학 Vol.5 No.1
Portugal, a country for centuries in a Diaspora fed upon by massive waves of emigration in the 19th and 20th centuries, has become a destination for Cape Verdean, Moldovan, Brazilian, Ukrainian, Chinese, and Russian immigration over the last 15 years. From an analysis of Portuguese and Brazilian contemporary fiction works in the fields of novels, cinema, video, I attempt to study how identities in transit are developed and built through processes of cultural hybridism and of ‘ghettoization’ experiences, leading both the Portuguese and the others, the immigrants, to become some ‘others’—we are all strange foreigners in the sudden world of global migrations.
Monolithic porous carbon materials prepared from polyurethane foam templates
João Pires,André Janeiro,Filipe J. Oliveira,Alexandre C. Bastos,Moisés L. Pinto 한국탄소학회 2016 Carbon Letters Vol.18 No.-
Monolithic carbon foams with hierarchical porosity were prepared from polyurethane templates and resol precursors. Mesoporosity was achieved through the use of soft templating with surfactant Pluronic F127, and macroporosity from the polyurethane foams was retained. Conditions to obtain high porosity materials were optimized. The best materials have high specific surface areas (380 and 582 m2 g–1, respectively) and high electrical conductivity, which make them good candidates for supports in sensors. These materials showed an almost linear dependence between the potential and the pH of aqueous solutions.

A numerical procedure for reinforced concrete columns with a focus on stability analysis
Susana L. Pires,Maria Cecilia A.T. Silva 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2014 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.14 No.6
The purpose of this paper is to present a numerical procedure to analyse reinforced concrete columns subjected to combined axial loads and bending that rigorously considers nonlinear material and nonlinear geometric characteristics. Column design and stability analysis are simultaneously regarded. A finite element method is used for calculating displacements and the material and geometric nonlinearities are taken into account using an iterative process. A computer program is developed from the proposed numerical procedure, and the efficiency of the program is verified against available experimental data. The model applies to constant rectangular cross sectional columns with symmetric reinforcement distribution.

Danúbia Soares Pires,Ginalber Luiz de Oliveira Serra 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2019 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.17 No.3
A methodology based on the smart combination of evolving fuzzy clustering and OKID (Observer/Kalman Filter Identification) algorithm, is proposed. The evolving fuzzy version of OKID algorithm is formulatedfor adjusting parameters and structure of the fuzzy Kalman filter, from experimental data. Experimentalresults from states and outputs estimation applied to online identification of a 2DoF helicopter show the efficiencyof the proposed methodology.
