Unilateral Punctate Keratitis Secondary to Wallenberg Syndrome
Pino Cidad,Ana Boto,Almudena Del Hierro,Maria Capote,Susana Noval,Amanda Garcia,Susana Santiago 대한안과학회 2014 Korean Journal of Ophthalmology Vol.28 No.3
We studied three patients who developed left unilateral punctate keratitis after suffering left-sidedWallenberg Syndrome. A complex evolution occurred in two of them. In all cases, neurophysiologicalstudies showed damage in the trigeminal sensory component at the bulbar level. Corneal involvementsecondary to Wallenberg syndrome is a rare cause of unilateral superficial punctate keratitis. The lossof corneal sensitivity caused by trigeminal neuropathy leads to epithelial erosions that are frequentlyunobserved by the patient, resulting in a high risk of corneal-ulcer development with the possibility ofsuperinfection. Neurophysiological studies can help to locate the anatomical level of damage at theophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve, confirming the suspected etiology of stroke, and demonstratingthat prior vascular involvement coincides with the location of trigeminal nerve damage. In some of thesepatients, oculofacial pain is a distinctive feature.

Purpose: To study the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and retinal alterations in chronic central serous chorioretinopathy treated with photodynamic therapy, and its correlation with functional parameters such as best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and contrast sensitivity (CS). Methods: Retrospective, noncomparative, consecutive evaluation by optical coherence tomography and its correlation with BCVA and CS in 31 eyes of 26 patients. Results: In all affected patients, 88.5% were male with a mean age of 42.9 years. The right eye was involved in 64.5% of cases, bilateral in 19% and 73.9% were hyperopic (spherical refraction between 0 and +5.0 diopters). Of these cases, 51.5% had peri-RPE abnormalities, 17.3% hyperreflective substances at RPE, 19.4% RPE atrophy, 55.3% foveolar atrophy, 3.1% pigment epithelial detachment, 5.2% subretinal fluid persistence, 8.3% fibrin deposits, 68.4% photoreceptor inner and outer segment line interruption and 31.1% external limiting membrane interruption. Conclusions: Time evolution and number of outbreaks were related to the decrease in foveal and chorodial thickness and in those with worse BCVA and CS. RPE abnormalities and atrophy were related to the age of onset of symptoms. Photoreceptor elongation has been correlated with poor BCVA and inner and outer segment line destructuring and interruption with poor CS.

During continuous operation of three mesophilic-anaerobic digesters, the effect of microwave irradiation, as sludge thermal pretreatment (60 to 65 degrees C), was studied. The fecal coliforms log inactivation for microwaved/digested sludge was 4.2 +/- 0.4, whereas for conventionally heated/digested sludge and control were 2.9 +/- 0.5 and 1.5 +/- 0.5, respectively. In the case of Salmonella spp., no colonies were detected in 85% of the microwaved/digested samples. Considering the detection limit, the log inactivation of these samples was greater than 2.0 +/- 0.3. The conventionally heated/digested sludge and control showed log inactivations of 1.9 +/- 0.2 and 1.1 +/- 0.3, respectively. At the 95% confidence level, microwaved/digested sludge increased the biogas production by 16.4 +/- 5.6% and 6.3 +/- 2.4%, as compared to control and conventionally heated/digested sludge, respectively. When thermally treated sludge was analyzed for soluble chemical oxygen demand, microwaved waste-activated sludge showed considerable solubilization between 37 and 60 degrees C. Microwaved/digested sludge showed a reduction of capillary suction times by 11.1 +/- 5.9% and 10.7 +/- 5.6%, as compared to control and conventionally heated/digested sludge, respectively.

Despite a great deal of research literature supporting task-based language teaching (TBLT), very little is known about how TBLT actually influences the EFL classroom in practical terms. This study thus attempts to provide a much-needed link between research and practice where TBLT is concerned. Specifically, this paper focuses on the impact of TBLT on Japanese EFL university students’ willingness to communication (WTC) in English. Administering McCroskey’s (1992) widely used WTC scale, the researchers measured the WTC of two groups of Japanese EFL university freshmen: 192 students who received task-based instruction (TBI) and 43 who received other types of instruction. Questionnaires were given at the beginning and at the end of the semester (after 16 weeks). The results of the questionnaires showed that the students that had received TBI had significantly increased their overall WTC scores, Group Discussion WTC scores and Public Speaking WTC scores over the course of the semester, while the WTC scores of the control group in all three sub-categories did not change much at all. Hence, providing some practical support to the psycholinguistic research literature advocating TBLT, this study was able to demonstrate some of the real-world benefits of TBLT in the Japanese EFL context.
Self-Organized Authentication in Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks
Pino Caballero-Gil,Candelaria Hern´andez-Goya 한국통신학회 2009 Journal of communications and networks Vol.11 No.5
This work proposes a new distributed and self-organized authentication scheme for mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs). Apart from describing all its components, special emphasis is placed on proving that the proposal fulfils most requirements derived from the special characteristics of MANETs, including limited physical protection of broadcast medium, frequent route changes caused by mobility, and lack of structured hierarchy. Interesting conclusions are obtained from an analysis of simulation experiments in different scenarios.

Study Design: Optical cross-sectional study. Purpose: To study the correlation between asymmetry of the back (measured by means of surface topography) and deformity of the spine (quantified by the Cobb angle). Overview of Literature: The Cobb angle is considered the gold standard in diagnosis and follow-up of scoliosis but does not correctly characterize the three-dimensional deformity of scoliosis. Furthermore, the exposure to ionizing radiation may cause harmful effects particularly during the growth stage, including breast cancer and other tumors. Methods: Patients aged 13.15±1.96 years (range, 7–17 years; n=88) with Cobb angle greater than 10° were evaluated with X-rays and our back surface topography method through three variables: axial plane (DHOPI), coronal plane (POTSI), and profile plane (PC). Pearson’s correlation was applied to determine the correlation between topographic and radiographic variables. One-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni correction were used to compare groups with different grades of scoliosis. Significance was set at p <0.01 and, in some cases, at p <0.05. Results: We detected a positive, statistically significant correlation between Cobb angle with DHOPI (r =0.810) and POTSI (r =0.629) and between PC variables with thoracic kyphosis angle (r =0.453) and lordosis lumbar angle (r =0.275). In addition, we found statistically significant differences for DHOPI and POTSI variables according to the grade of scoliosis. Conclusions: Although the back surface topography method cannot substitute for radiographs in the diagnosis of scoliosis, correlations between radiographic and topographic parameters suggest that it offers additional quantitative data that may complement radiologic study.

Iconic art infusion in luxury retail strategies: Unveiling the potential
Giovanni Pino,Gianluigi Guido,라잔나타라잔 한국마케팅과학회 2017 마케팅과학연구 Vol.27 No.2
This research investigates art infusion, a phenomenon in which artistic elements contribute to enhance the perceived value of consumer goods, in the retailing sector. An experiment conducted with 188 consumers suggests that individuals with high dispositional greed are more interested in shopping in luxury stores that promote products through artworks representative of an artist’s iconic, that is, most recognizable, style. Results show that greed determines consumers’ store preference through an externalized luxury tendency, that is a tendency to purchase luxury goods to show off social status. Such an eff ect proved to be stronger for extroverted than for introverted consumers.

This work investigates a hybrid polyester composite consisted of Curauá natural fibres and organophilic clay nanoparticles. A Taguchi method is used to identify the effects of fibre fraction (10, 20 and 30 wt%), alkaline treatmentconcentration (NaOH, 2.5, 5 and 10 wt%), treatment time (2, 4 and 8 h) and nanoparticle content (2.5, 5 and 10 wt%) on the mechanical behaviour of the hybrid composites under tension and three-point bending. X-ray, FTIR and microstructural analysis are performed to assess the treated and untreated fibre surfaces. The optimum combination of the process parameters for the tensile and flexural properties is: fibre content at 30 wt%, NaOH concentration at 5 wt%, treatment time at 8 h and nanoclay inclusions at 5 wt%. A mean tensile and flexural strength of 36.13 MPa and 32.55 MPa are obtained, whichrepresents percent increases of 39.22 % and 25.43 % compared to the polyester polymer in pristine condition.
