• Friction-based beam-to-column connection for low-damage RC frames with hybrid trussed beams

Piero Colajanni,Salvatore Pagnotta 국제구조공학회 2022 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.45 No.2

Hybrid Steel-Trussed Concrete Beam (HSTCB) is structural typology suitable for light industrialization. HSTCBs usually cover long span with small depths, which lead to significant amount of longitudinal rebars. The latter make beamcolumn joints more prone to damage due to earthquake-induced cyclic actions. This phenomenon can be avoided using frictionbased BCCs. Friction devices at Beam-to-Column Connections (BCCs) have become promising solutions to reduce the damage experienced by structural members during severe earthquakes. Few solutions have been developed for cast-in-place Reinforced Concrete (RC) and steel-concrete composite Moment Resisting Frames (MRFs), because of the difficulty of designing costeffective damage-proof connections. This paper proposes a friction-based BCC for RC MRFs made with HSTCBs. Firstly, the proposed connection is described, and its innovative characteristics are emphasized. Secondly, the design method of the connection is outlined. A detailed 3D FE model representative of a beam-column joint fitted with the proposed connection is developed. Several monotonic and cyclic analyses are performed, investigating different design moment values. Lastly, the numerical results are discussed, which demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed solution in preventing damage to RC members, and in ensuring satisfactory dissipative capacity.

Design procedure for prestressed concrete beams

Piero Colajanni,Antonino Recupero,Nino Spinella 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2014 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.13 No.2

The theoretical basis and the main results of a design procedure, which attempts to provide the optimal layout of ordinary reinforcement in prestressed concrete beams, subjected to bending moment and shear force are presented. The difficulties encountered in simulating the actual behaviour of prestressed concrete beam in presence of coupled forces bending moment - shear force are discussed; particular emphasis is put on plastic models and stress fields approaches. A unified model for reinforced and prestressed concrete beams under axial force - bending moment - shear force interaction is provided. This analytical model is validated against both experimental results collected in literature and nonlinear numerical analyses. Finally, for illustrating the applicability of the proposed procedure, an example of design for a full-scale prestressed concrete beam is shown.

Generalization of shear truss model to the case of SFRC beams with stirrups

Piero Colajanni,Antonino Recupero,Nino Spinella 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2012 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.9 No.3

A theoretical model for shear strength evaluation of fibrous concrete beams reinforced with stirrups is proposed. The formulation is founded on the theory of plasticity and the stress field concepts, generalizing a known plastic model for calculating the bearing capacity of reinforced concrete beams, to the case of fibrous concrete. The beneficial effect of steel fibres is estimated taking into account the residual tensile strength of fibrous concrete, by modifying an analytical constitutive law which presents a plastic plateau as a post-peak branch. Around fifty results of experimental tests carried out on steel fibrous concrete beams available in the literature were collected, and a comparison of shear strength estimation provided by other semi-empirical models is performed, proving that the numerical values obtained with the proposed model are in very good agreement with the experimental results.

Biologically Sensitive Field-Effect Devices using Polysilicon TFTs

        Piero Migliorato,Pedro Estrela,Andrew G. Stewart,Simon D. Keighley 한국물리학회 2006 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.48 No.I

This paper presents a review of recent developments in the detection of biomolecular interactions with field-effect devices. Ion-sensitive field-effect transistors (ISFETs) and enzyme field-effect transistors (EnFETs), based on polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) TFTs, are discussed. Label-free electrical detection of DNA hybridization has been achieved by a new method, by using MOS capacitors or poly-Si TFTs. The method can in principle be extended to other chemical or biochemical systems, such as proteins and cells.o

Preventing a Mass Disease: The Case of Gallstones Disease: Role and Competence for Family Physicians

Piero Portincasa,Agostino Di Ciaula,Ignazio Grattagliano 대한가정의학회 2016 Korean Journal of Family Medicine Vol.37 No.4

Gallstone formation is the result of a complex interaction between genetic and nongenetic factors. We searched and reviewed the available literature to define how the primary prevention of gallstones (cholesterol gallstones in particular) could be applied in general practice. Electronic bibliographical databases were searched. Prospective and retrospective cohort studies and case–controlled studies were analyzed and graded for evidence quality. The epidemiological data confirmed that genetic factors are estimated to account for only approximately 25% of the overall risk of gallstones, while metabolic/environmental factors are at least partially modifiable in stone-free risk groups, and are thus modifiable by primary prevention measures related to diet, lifestyle, and environmental factors (i.e., rapid weight loss, bariatric surgery, somatostatin or analogues therapy, transient gallbladder stasis, and hormone therapy). There is no specific recommendation for the secondary prevention of recurrent gallstones. Family physicians can contribute to preventing gallstones due to their capability to identify and effectively manageseveral risk factors discussed in this study. Although further studies are needed to better elucidate the involvement of epigenetic factors that may regulate the effect of environment and lifestyle on gene expression in the primary prevention of gallstone formation, preventive interventions are feasible and advisable in the general practice setting.

      • Characterization and Modeling of a-IGZO TFTs

        Migliorato, Piero,Chowdhury, Md Delwar Hossain,Jae Gwang Um,Manju Seok,Martivenga, Mallory,Jin Jang IEEE 2015 Journal of display technology Vol.11 No.6

In this paper, we present a systematic approach to the characterization and modeling of amorphous Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide (a-IGZO) thin-film transistors (TFTs), where the key parameters are determined from the analysis of both I- V and C- V characteristics, in a step-by-step fashion, without complex interdependences that may affect the accuracy of the results. Flat band voltage VFB and carrier concentration nFB are extracted by a method we have previously developed, validated here by applying it to simulated data. Next, the density of deep gap states is extracted, followed by the determination, by a new method, of the shallow donor concentration. The tail states parameters are determined last, by matching the calculated nFB to the experimental one. Simulations are then performed without any adjustable parameters. The approach is applied to the study of device to device variations, indicating that the material is strongly compensated. As for the analysis of Negative Bias under Illumination Stress (NBIS), this work confirms that the effect is due to creation of a double donor, with a shallow level close to the conduction band (positive correlation energy). Oxygen vacancies are the likely candidates. These defects are not detected in unstressed devices, where the characteristics can be accurately simulated by incorporating donors with a single shallow level.

Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Pandemic: The Psychological Well-Being in a Cohort of Workers of a Multinational Company

        Lovreglio, Piero,Leso, Veruscka,Riccardi, Elisabetta,Stufano, Angela,Pacella, Daniela,Cagnazzo, Francesco,Ercolano, Maria Luigia,Iavicoli, Ivo Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute 2022 Safety and health at work Vol.13 No.1

Background: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the psychological well-being (PWB) during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic in workers of a multinational company. Methods: Employees (aged ≥18 years) were recruited from Latin American, North American, New Zealand, and European sites of a multinational company operative during all the pandemic period. The self-reported Psychological General Well-Being Index was used to assess the global PWB and the effects on six subdomains: anxiety, depressed mood, positive well-being, self-control, general health, and vitality. The influencing role of age, gender, geographical location, COVID-19 epidemiology, and restrictive measures adopted to control the pandemic was explored. Results: A total of 1335 workers completed the survey. The aggregate median PWB global score was in a positive range, with significantly better outcomes detected in the Mexican and Colombian Latin American sites compared with the other worldwide countries (p < 0.001). Among the European locations, a significantly higher PWB score was determined in Spain compared with the German and French sites (p < 0.05). Comparable geographical trends were demonstrated for all the PWB subdomains. Male workers had a significantly better PWB compared with females (p < 0.05), whereas a negative correlation emerged with aging (p = 0.01). COVID-19 epidemiology and pandemic control measures had no clear effects on PWB. Conclusion: Monitoring PWB and the impact of individual and pandemic-related variables may be helpful to clarify the mental health effects of pandemic, define targeted psychological-supporting measures, also in the workplace, to face such a complex situation in a more constructive way.
