I read with great interest the original work of Satirapoj et al [1], particularly with regard to the number of cases seen in patients affected by chronic kidney disease (CKD III and CKD IV). However, in spite of the use of an amino acid supplement, this study seems to lack clarity and provides no firm evidence by which to evaluate and confirm the aims of the study. In particular, I should like to emphasize the following: 1) There is no explanation as to how glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was calculated.

The yield of sugar beet depends mainly on the effective protection to a number of pests and diseases affecting the crop. In the absence of actual methods of management, as in the case of viral diseases, the availability of genetic resistance sometimes allows the survival of the crop in the affected areas. Integration of molecular markers in conventional breeding procedures has provided a reliable means for improving the efficiency of selection methods. The present review summarizes the evolution, thanks to the application of molecular techniques, of traditional breeding for resistance to some biotic stresses in sub-arid environments.
Surgical Management of Rhinosinusitis in Onco-Hematological Patients

Objectives. In onco-hematological diseases, the incidence of paranasal sinuses infection dramatically increase and requires a combination of medical and surgical therapy. Balloon dilatation surgery (DS) is a minimally invasive, tissue preserv- ing procedure. The study evaluates the results of DS for rhinosinusitis in immunocompromised patients. Methods. A retrospective chart review was conducted in 110 hematologic patients with rhinosinusitis. Twenty-five patients were treated with DS technique and 85 patients with endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). We considered the type of an- esthesia and the extent of intra- and postoperative bleeding. Patients underwent Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-20) to evaluate changes in subjective symptoms and global patient assessment (GPA) questionnaire to value patient satis- faction. Results. Local anesthesia was employed in 8 cases of DS and in 15 of ESS. In 50 ESS patients, an anterior nasal packing was placed and in 12 cases a repacking was necessary. In the DS group, nasal packing was required in 8 cases and in 2 cases a repacking was placed (P=0.019 and P=0.422, respectively). The SNOT-20 change score showed significant improvement of health status in both groups. However the DS group showed a major improvement in 3 voices: need to blow nose, runny nose, and facial pain/pressure. The 3-month follow-up GPA questionnaire showed an higher sat- isfaction of DS group. Conclusion. Balloon DS represents a potentially low aggressive treatment and appears to be relatively safe and effective in onco-hematologic patients. All these remarks may lead the surgeon to consider a larger number of candidates for sur- gical procedure.

The fermented manure derivative known as Preparation 500 is traditionally used as a field spray in biodynamic agriculture for maintaining and increasing soil fertility. This work aimed at characterizing the product from a microbiological standpoint and at assaying its bioactive properties. The approach involved molecular taxonomical characterization of the culturable microbial community; ARISA fingerprints of the total bacteria and fungal communities; chemical elemental macronutrient analysis via a combustion analyzer; activity assays for six key enzymes; bioassays for bacterial quorum sensing and chitolipooligosaccharide production; and plant hormonelike activity. The material was found to harbor a bacterial community of 2.38 × 108 CFU/g dw dominated by Grampositives with minor instances of Actinobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria. ARISA showed a coherence of bacterial assemblages in different preparation lots of the same year in spite of geographic origin. Enzymatic activities showed elevated values of β-glucosidase, alkaline phosphatase, chitinase, and esterase. The preparation had no quorum sensing-detectable signal, and no rhizobial nod gene-inducing properties, but displayed a strong auxin-like effect on plants. Enzymatic analyses indicated a bioactive potential in the fertility and nutrient cycling contexts. The IAA activity and microbial degradation products qualify for a possible activity as soil biostimulants. Quantitative details and possible modes of action are discussed.
