      • Field cooling of a MgB2 cylinder around a permanent magnet stack: prototype for superconductive magnetic bearing

        Perini, E,Giunchi, G IOP Publishing Ltd 2009 Superconductor science & technology Vol.22 No.4

<P>The behaviour of bulk superconductors as levitators of permanent magnets (PMs) has been extensively studied for the textured YBCO high-temperature superconductor material, in the temperature range lower than 77 K, obtaining extremely high trapped fields but also experiencing limitations on the mechanical characteristics of the material and on the possibility to produce large objects. Alternatively, bulk MgB2, even if it is superconducting at lower temperatures, has fewer mechanical problems, when fully densified, and presents stable magnetization in the temperature range between 10 and 30 K. With the reactive Mg-liquid infiltration technique we have produced dense MgB2 bulk cylinders of up to 65 mm diameter and 100 mm height. This kind of cylinder can be consider as a prototype of a passive magnetic bearing for flywheels or other rotating electrical machines. We have conductively cooled one of these superconducting cylinders inside a specially constructed cryostat, and the levitation forces and stiffness, with respect to axial movements of various arrangements of the PM, have been measured as a function of the temperature below <I>T</I>c. We verified the very stable characteristics of the induced magnetization after several cycles of relative movements of the PM and the superconducting cylinder. </P>

A Long Term Effects of a New Onset Psychosis after DBS Treated with Quetiapine in a Patient with Parkinson’s Disease

        Sara Piccoli,Giulia Perini,Silvia Pizzighello,Alec Vestri,Giovanni Ferri,Tommaso Toffanin,Halima Follador,Andrea Martinuzzi 대한신경정신의학회 2015 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.12 No.1

Deep Brain Stimulation represents a therapeutic option for PD patients. In this paper, we present and discuss a case of acute delirium and psychosis manifesting after DBS in a 58-years-old man affected by Parkinson’s Disease. We highlight the importance of an exhaustive psychiatric evaluation in candidates for DBS and we underline the severity and non-reversibility of some adverse events associated with the implantation, suggesting the use of Quetiapine in the management of these effects. Acute psychosis may be listed as a potential severe adverse event associated with DBS, even in patients without a clear cut previous history of psychiatric disorders.

Effect of Different Spray Dried Plasmas on Growth, Ileal Digestibility, Nutrient Deposition, Immunity and Health of Early-Weaned Pigs Challenged with E. coli K88

        Bosi, P.,Han, In K.,Jung, H.J.,Heo, K.N.,Perini, S.,Castellazzi, A.M.,Casini, L.,Creston, D.,Gremokolini, C. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2001 Animal Bioscience Vol.14 No.8

A total of 96 piglets were weaned at 19 and 13 days in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively, and allotted to one of four diets: three with different spray dried plasmas (SPs) and one with hydrolysed casein (HC). SPs were from pigs (SPP), mixed origin (SMP), and mixed origin with standardized level of immunoglobulins (SMPIG). All the diets contained 1.7% total lysine, 25% of the test protein source, 45% corn starch, 15% lactose, 2% sucrose, 7% soybean oil. At d 4 and d 2 in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively, piglets were perorally challenged with $10^{10}$ CFU E. coli K88. Growth performance, immunity, and health condition were measured for 15 days and 14 days in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively. To investigate apparent ileal digestibility and nutrient deposition, all piglets were sacrificed at d 14 in Exp. 2. In 1. 3 piglets died in HC diet and 1 in SPP diet. HC diet showed higher mortality (p<0.01) than other diets. In Exp. 2, no clinical sign of infection was detected, no difference for the content of E. coli K88 was found in feces at 4 and 6 days after the infection, and no E. coli K88 was found in the jejunum at the end of experiment. In both experiments, feed intake was lower for HC diet and ADG was 96, 106, 122 and 155 for HC, SPP, SMP and SMPIG diet, respectively (HC vs others, p<0.05; SMPIG vs other SP, p<0.01). Heal apparent digestibility of nitrogen in sacrificed piglets was higher for HC diet (p<0.05). After the challenge, K88-specific titers in saliva (Exp. 1) and in plasma (Exp. 2) were reduced in SMP and SMPIG. The piglets positive to the adhesion of the used E. coli strain to the intestinal brush borders had a significantly reduced growth (p<0.01) and a higher K88-specific IgA titer in plasma, in comparison with negative ones. This effect was independent of the diet. The data show the relevance of spray dried plasma sources and particularly of SP with standardized level of immunoglobulins for the feeding of early-weaned at the risk of infection by enterotoxigenic bacteria.

Effects of Dietary Buffering Characteristics and Protected or Unprotected Acids on Piglet Growth, Digestibility and Characteristics of Gut Content

        Bosi, P.,Jung, H.J.,Han, In K.,Perini, S.,Cacciavillani, J.A.,Casini, L.,Creston, D.,Gremokolini, C.,Mattuzzi, S. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 1999 Animal Bioscience Vol.12 No.7

We condicted two experiments to evaluate the interaction among fumaric acid (FA), protected acids (PA), or no additional acid (NO) and two different levels of acid buffering capacity (BC) in diets for 14-d-old weaned pigs. BC was varied substituting mono-calcium phosphate and calcium sulfate for dicalcium phosphate and calcium carbonate. In the high BC diet plus PA, FA was also added. In Exp. 1, 48 gilts were raised for 31 days on the six diets, evaluating growth performance and fecal digestibility. In Exp. 2, 42 gilts were raised. With each diet three subjects were sacrificed after 19 days and four after 38 days. In addition, six subjects were sacrificed at weaning. Growth and carcass performance, ileal digestibility, bacterial populations and pH in the gut were assessed. The piglet performance and stomach, ileal and cecal pH, and empty body composition were not affected by the diets. Empty body composition other than ash content was affected by piglet age (p<0.01). The BC did not influence digestibility. The dietary inclusion of PA improved fecal digestibility of protein (p<0.05) compared to the addition of FA and NO. Ileal digestibility slightly increased with both acid additions (p<0.10), the groups receiving PA showing the higher values. Piglets fed diets with low BC had lower Lactobacillus and E. coli counts in the ileum (p=0.07) and higher Lactobacillus in the colon (p=0.08). Acidified diets tended to reduce E. coli counts in the ileum (p=0.10) and increased Lactobacillus in the colon (p=0.09). The addition in the diet of PA increased Lactobacillus in the ileum compared to the sole addition of free fumaric acid (p=0.07). The addition of protected acids, combined with free fumaric acid in the case of high BC diets, increased protein digestibility and Lactobacillus counts and reduced E.coli counts. Only some changes in the concentration of bacterial population can be expected with a diet of low BC.

Temperature- and Frequency-Dependent Dielectric Properties of Sol–Gel-Derived BaTiO3-NaNbO3 Solid Solutions

        Kwon, D. K.,Goh, Y.,Son, D.,Kim, B. H.,Bae, H.,Perini, S.,Lanagan, M. Springer Science + Business Media 2016 Journal of electronic materials Vol.45 No.1

<P>A sol-gel-derived powder synthesis method has been used to prepare BaTiO3-NaNbO3 (BT-NN) solid-solution ceramic samples with various compositions. Fine and homogeneous complex perovskite ceramics were obtained at lower processing temperatures than used in conventional solid-state processing. The ferroelectric and relaxor ferroelectric properties of the sol-gel-synthesized (1 - x)BaTiO3-xNaNbO(3) [(1 - x)BT-xNN] ceramics in the wide composition range of 0 < x a parts per thousand currency sign 0.7 were extensively studied. Structural and dielectric characterization results revealed that a low level of NN addition (x = 0.04) to BT is sufficient to cause a continuous relaxor-to-ferroelectric transition, and the relaxor behavior was consistently observed at compositions with high NN content up to x = 0.7. A number of relaxor parameters including the Curie temperature, Burns temperature, freezing temperature, gamma, diffuseness parameter (delta), and activation energy were determined from the temperature and frequency dependency of the real part of the dielectric permittivity for various BT-NN compositions using the Curie-Weiss law and Vogel-Fulcher relationship. The systematic changes of these parameters with respect to composition indicate that a continuous crossover between BT-based relaxor and NN-based relaxor occurs at a composition near x = 0.4.</P>

Staged Treatment of Phlegmasia Cerulea Dolens in a Patient with Iliac Vein Compression Syndrome and Deep Vein Thrombosis: A Case Report

Francine Eliza Faccin,Ana Paula Donadello Martins,Leonardo Henrique Bertolucci,Ledwyng David Gonzalez Patino,Oscar Rockenbach Pereira,Alfredo Augusto Schulte,Silvio Cesar Perini 대한혈관외과학회 2023 Vascular Specialist International Vol.39 No.1

Iliac vein compression syndrome (IVCS) is defined as extrinsic compression of the left common iliac vein (LCIV) between the overlying right common iliac artery and the lumbar vertebra. The most severe complication is phlegmasia cerulea dolens (PCD), a medical emergency that requires quick intervention to prevent irreversible limb ischemia. This article reports the case of a patient with PCD as the first manifestation of IVCS. The treatment included embolectomy and fasciotomy. Bilateral femoral iliac axis phlebography and cavography were performed 48 hours after the procedure. The IVCS was identified, and balloon predilatation of the lesions followed by implantation of self-expanding stents from the confluence of the LCIV with the inferior vena cava to the middle portion of the left external iliac vein was performed. Postprocedure phlebography demonstrated satisfactory final results, and a 12-month follow-up image showed patent stents and minimal intimal hyperplasia.
