Residual frying oil in the diets of sheep: intake, digestibility, nitrogen balance and ruminal parameters

Peixoto, Eduardo Lucas Terra,Mizubuti, Ivone Yurika,Ribeiro, Edson Luiz de Azambuja,Moura, Elizabeth dos Santos,Pereira, Elzania Sales,Prado, Odimari Pricila Pires do,Carvalho, Larissa Nobrega de,Pire Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2017 Animal Bioscience Vol.30 No.1

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the intake and nutrient digestibility, nitrogen balance and ruminal ammonia nitrogen in lambs of diets containing different levels of residual frying oil. Methods: Levels of 0, 20, 40, 60, and 80 g/kg dry matter (DM) base of residual frying oil in the diets of lambs were evaluated. Five castrated lambs with initial body weights of $36.8{\pm}3.3kg$, distributed in a Latin square ($5{\times}5$) design, were used. Results: There was a decreasing linear effect on the intake of DM, organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), total carbohydrates (TCH), and nonfibrous carbohydrates (NFC). There was an increased linear intake of ether extract (EE). The apparent digestibility of DM, OM, CP, NDF, TCH, and NFC, as well as urine nitrogen excretion, nitrogen balance and ruminal parameters, were not influenced by different levels of residual frying oil in the diet. EE digestibility presented a crescent linear effect. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the addition of residual frying oil to the diets of sheep can affect nutrient intake without affecting the digestibility of most nutrients (with the exception of EE), nitrogen balance and ruminal ammonia nitrogen concentration.

Second trimester cervical length measurement for prediction spontaneous preterm birth in an unselected risk population

( Alberto Borges Peixoto ),( Taciana Mara Rodrigues Da Cunha Caldas ),( Luisa Almeida Tahan ),( Caetano Galvao Petrini ),( Wellington P Martins ),( Fabricio Da Silva Costa ),( Edward Araujo Junior ) 대한산부인과학회 2017 Obstetrics & Gynecology Science Vol.60 No.4

Objective To assess the predictive capacity of cervical length (CL) measurement underwent during the second trimester ultrasound for prediction preterm birth <32, 34, and 37 weeks of gestation in an unselected risk population. Methods A retrospective cohort study was performed with 751 singleton pregnancies between 20 and 24+6 weeks of gestation. The CL measurement (mm) using the transvaginal route was obtained in a sagittal view and the calipers positioned to measure the linear distance between the triangular area of echodensity at the external os and the internal os. To compare the preterm (<37 weeks) and term births (≥37 weeks), we used unpaired t test. We assessed whether the CL measurement was dependent of gestational age by performing a linear regression and assessing the coefficient of determination (R²). We additionally assessed the accuracy of CL measurement to predict preterm birth by assessing the area under receiver operating characteristics curves with its respective confidence intervals (CIs) 95%. Results Preterm birth <37 weeks was found in 13.6% (102/751) of pregnant women. Short cervix (≤25 mm) was found in 2.7% (20/751) of pregnancies. Only 30% (6/20) of pregnant women with short cervix have used progesterone to prevent preterm birth. There was a weak correlation between CL measurement and gestational age at delivery (R2=0.01, P=0.002). Receiver operating characteristics curve analysis of the ability of CL measurement to predict preterm birth <32, 34, and 37 weeks, showed an area under the curve of 0.693 (95% CI, 0.512 to 0.874), 0.472 (95% CI, 0.353 to 0.591), 0.490 (95% CI, 0.426 to 0.555), respectively. Conclusion There was a weak correlation between CL measurement and gestational age at delivery. In an unselected population, CL measurement screening at 20 to 24+6 weeks of gestation does not seem to be a good predictor of preterm birth.

The impact of first-trimester intrauterine hematoma on adverse perinatal outcomes

Alberto Borges Peixoto,Edward Araujo Júnior,Taciana Mara Rodrigues da Cunha Caldas,Caetano Galvão Petrini,Ana Cecília Palma Romero,Luciano Eliziário Borges Júnior,Wellington P. Martins 대한초음파의학회 2018 ULTRASONOGRAPHY Vol.37 No.4

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the presence of an intrauterinehematoma (IUH) on an early pregnancy ultrasound scan showing a live fetus was related toadverse perinatal outcomes. Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study to evaluate pregnant women whounderwent an ultrasound examination in early pregnancy, between 6 weeks 0 days and 10weeks 6 days. We compared the perinatal outcomes between women with and without firsttrimester IUH using the Mann-Whitney and Fisher exact tests. Furthermore, we performed astepwise regression analysis to identify possible predictors of miscarriage among maternalcharacteristics, ultrasound parameters, and IUH. Results: During the study period, data from 783 pregnancies were included, and the incidence ofIUH was 4.5% (35 of 783). We observed a higher proportion of miscarriage following the scan(28.6% vs. 10%, P=0.003) and a larger yolk sac diameter during the scan (4.8 mm vs. 3.8 mm,P<0.001) in the pregnant women with first-trimester IUH. There was no significant differenceregard the prevalence of low birth weight (LBW; P=0.091), very LBW (P=0.370), or extremelyLBW (P=0.600) between cases with IUH and without IUH, the cesarean section rate (68% vs. 81%, P=0.130), preterm delivery (16% vs. 16%, P>0.999), or the incidence of first-trimestervaginal bleeding (31% vs. 20%, P=0.130). Moreover, heart rate (HR) was the only variable thatpredicted miscarriage with statistical significance (P=0.017). Conclusion: Women with first-trimester IUH had a higher risk of miscarriage after the ultrasoundscan. HR was the only variable that predicted miscarriage with statistical significance.

( Alberto Borges Peixoto ),( Taciana Mara Rodrigues Da Cunha Caldas ),( Ana Helena Bittencourt Alamy ),( Wellington P. Martins ),( Rafael Frederico Bruns ),( Edward Araujo Junior ) 대한산부인과학회 2016 Obstetrics & Gynecology Science Vol.59 No.4

To establish reference values for the cervical length (CL) measurement by transvaginal ultrasound between 20 and 24+6 weeks of gestation in a large Brazilian population. A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed with 996 singleton pregnancies. The CL measurement (mm) using the transvaginal ultrasound was obtained in a sagittal view and the calipers positioned to measure the linear distance between the triangular area of echodensity at the external os and the internal os. The median±standard deviation and ranges for the CL measurement (mm) was 37.0±10.7 (range, 8 to 51). CL measurement did not modify significantly with gestational age. The observed percentiles for the CL measurement (mm) considering all number case were the following: 5th, 28 mm; 50th, 37 mm; and 95th, 45 mm. Reference values for the CL measurement by transvaginal ultrasound between 20 and 24+6 weeks of gestation in a large heterogeneous Brazilian population were established.

Genetic study of quantitative traits supports the use of Guzerá as dual-purpose cattle

        Carrara Eula Regina,Peixoto Maria Gabriela Campolina Diniz,Veroneze Renata,Silva Fabyano Fonseca e,Ramos Pedro Vital Brasil,Bruneli Frank Angelo Tomita,Zadra Lenira El Faro,Ventura Henrique Torres,Jos 아세아·태평양축산학회 2022 Animal Bioscience Vol.35 No.7

Objective: The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for 305-day cumulative milk yield and components, growth, and reproductive traits in Guzerá cattle. Methods: The evaluated traits were 305-day first-lactation cumulative yields (kg) of milk (MY305), fat (FY305), protein (PY305), lactose (LY305), and total solids (SY305); age at first calving (AFC) in days; adjusted scrotal perimeter (cm) at the ages of 365 (SP365) and 450 (SP450) days; and adjusted body weight (kg) at the ages of 210 (W210), 365 (W365), and 450 (W450) days. The (co)variance components were estimated using the restricted maximum likelihood method for single-trait, bi-trait and tri-trait analyses. Contemporary groups and additive genetic effects were included in the general mixed model. Maternal genetic and permanent environmental effects were also included for W210. Results: The direct heritability estimates ranged from 0.16 (W210) to 0.32 (MY305). The maternal heritability estimate for W210 was 0.03. Genetic correlation estimates among milk production traits and growth traits ranged from 0.92 to 0.99 and from 0.92 to 0.99, respectively. For milk production and growth traits, the genetic correlations ranged from 0.33 to 0.56. The genetic correlations among AFC and all other traits were negative (–0.43 to –0.27). Scrotal perimeter traits and body weights showed genetic correlations ranging from 0.41 to 0.46, and scrotal perimeter and milk production traits showed genetic correlations ranging from 0.11 to 0.30. The phenotypic correlations were similar in direction (same sign) and lower than the corresponding genetic correlations. Conclusion: These results suggest the viability and potential of joint selection for dairy and beef traits in Guzerá cattle, taking into account reproductive traits. The effects of different metal posts, cements, and exposure parameters on cone-beam computed tomography artifacts

Freitas Ana Priscila Lira de Farias,Peixoto Larissa Rangel,Mariz Suassuna Fernanda Clotilde,Bento Patrícia Meira,Maia Amorim Ana Marly Araújo,Rovaris Silva Karla,de Almeida Barros Renata Quirino,Pontu 대한영상치의학회 2023 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.53 No.2

Purpose: This study assessed the intensity of artifacts produced by 2 metal posts, 2 cements, and different exposure parameters using 2 cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) units. Materials and Methods: The sample was composed of 20 single-rooted premolars, divided into 4 groups: Ni-Cr/ zinc phosphate, Ni-Cr/resin cement, Ag-Pd/zinc phosphate, and Ag-Pd/resin cement. Samples were scanned before and after post insertion and cementation using a CS9000 3D scanner with 4 exposure parameters (85/90 kV and 6.3/10 mA) and an i-CAT scanner with 120 kV and 5 mA. The presence of artifacts was assessed subjectively by 2 observers and objectively by a trained observer using ImageJ software. The Mann-Whitney, Wilcoxon, weighted kappa, and chi-square tests were used to assess data at a 95% confidence level (α<0.05). Results: In the subjective analyses, AgPd presented more hypodense and hyperdense lines than NiCr (P<0.05), and more hypodense halos were found using i-CAT (P<0.05) than using CS9000 3D. More hypodense halos, hypodense lines, and hyperdense lines were observed at 10 mA than at 6.3 mA (P<0.05). More hypodense halos were observed at 85 kV than at 90 kV (P<0.05). CS9000 3D presented more hypodense and hyperdense lines than i-CAT (P<0.05). In the objective analyses, AgPd presented higher percentages of hyperdense and hypodense artifacts than NiCr (P<0.05). Zinc phosphate cement presented higher hyperdense artifact percentages on CS9000 3D scans (P<0.05). CS9000 3D presented higher artifact percentages than i-CAT (P<0.05). Conclusion: High-atomic-number alloys, higher tube current, and lower tube voltage may increase the artifacts present in CBCT images.

Can silver diamine fluoride or silver nanoparticle-based anticaries agents to affect enamel bond strength?

Favaro Jaqueline Costa,de Mello Peixoto Yana Cosendey Toledo,Geha Omar,Dias Flaviana Alves,Guiraldo Ricardo Danil,Lopes Murilo Baena,Berger Sandrine Bittencourt 대한치과보존학회 2021 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.46 No.1

Objectives: The aim of the current study is to investigate the effect of different anticaries agents, such as experimental agents based on silver nanoparticles (SNPs) and silver diamine fluoride (SDF), on the micro-shear bond strength (μ-SBS) of composite resin applied to intact enamel (IE) or demineralized enamel (DE). Materials and Methods: Sixty dental enamel fragments were collected from human third molars and categorized into 6 groups (n = 10): positive control (IE), negative control (DE), IE + SDF, DE + SDF, IE + SNP and DE + SNP. Samples from DE, DE + SDF and DE + SNP groups were subjected to pH cycling; superficial microhardness test was performed to confirm demineralization. Resin composite build-ups were applied to the samples (0.75-mm diameter and 1-mm height) after the treatments (except for IE and DE groups); μ-SBS was also evaluated. Samples were analyzed under a stereomicroscope at 40× magnification to identify failure patterns. Data were subjected to one-way analysis of variance, followed by Tukey's and Dunnett's tests (p < 0.05). Results: There was no significant difference among the IE, IE + SNP, DE + SDF, and DE + SNP groups. The IE + SDF and DE groups recorded the highest and the lowest μ-SBS values, respectively. Adhesive-type failures were the most frequent for all treatments. Conclusions: Anticaries agents did not have a negative effect on the μ-SBS of composite resin when it was used on IE or DE.

      • Neuromyelitis optica and multiple sclerosis: Seeing differences through optical coherence tomography

        Bennett, JL,de Seze, J,Lana-Peixoto, M,Palace, J,Waldman, A,Schippling, S,Tenembaum, S,Banwell, B,Greenberg, B,Levy, M,Fujihara, K,Chan, KH,Kim, HJ,Asgari, N,Sato, DK,Saiz, A,Wuerfel, J,Zimmermann, H SAGE Publications 2015 Multiple sclerosis journal: clinical and laborator Vol.21 No.6

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an inflammatory autoimmune disease of the central nervous system that preferentially targets the optic nerves and spinal cord. The clinical presentation may suggest multiple sclerosis (MS), but a highly specific serum autoantibody against the astrocytic water channel aquaporin-4 present in up to 80% of NMO patients enables distinction from MS. Optic neuritis may occur in either condition resulting in neuro-anatomical retinal changes. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has become a useful tool for analyzing retinal damage both in MS and NMO. Numerous studies showed that optic neuritis in NMO typically results in more severe retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell layer thinning and more frequent development of microcystic macular edema than in MS. Furthermore, while patients’ RNFL thinning also occurs in the absence of optic neuritis in MS, subclinical damage seems to be rare in NMO. Thus, OCT might be useful in differentiating NMO from MS and serve as an outcome parameter in clinical studies.
