        The Changing Role of a Bank’s Treasury

        This study investigates the contemporary role of banks’ treasuries and shows how the treasury function is being transformed across the banking sector. Using a sample of international surveys of banks representing both emerging and advanced markets (with 35% of banks representing the Asia–Pacific region), we analyze the current and future challenges faced by treasuries. Including the Asia–Pacific banks in the analysis enables comparison of how the treasury departments differ in their search of revenue diversification under the conditions of tighter credit and liquidity, and what are the problems associated with treasury products offering as part of the revised strategies.

        β-Caryophyllene Reduces DNA Oxidation and the Overexpression of Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein in the Prefrontal Cortex and Hippocampus of d-Galactose-Induced Aged BALB/c Mice

        Aging is associated with detrimental cellular and cognitive changes, making it an important public health concern; yet, many of these changes may be influenced by nutritional interventions. The natural sesquiterpene β-caryophyllene (BCP) has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects that are mediated by cannabinoid type-2 receptor activation, and these actions promote neuroprotection in different animal models that involve a cognitive damage. Consequently, whether chronic administration of BCP might prevent the age-related cellular and cognitive damage in a model of aging induced by chronic d-galactose (GAL) consumption was assessed here. Male BALB/c mice were administered BCP (10 mg/kg, oral), GAL (300 mg/kg, intraperitoneal), or GAL+BCP, and long-term memory and cognitive flexibility were evaluated in the normal and the reverse phases of Morris water maze test. In addition, immunohistochemistry was performed on prefrontal and hippocampal brain slices to detect glial acidic fibrillary protein and DNA oxidation. Although GAL administration reduced cognitive flexibility (P = .0308), this functional damage was not reversed by administering BCP. However, GAL administration also elevated the total number of astrocytes and their interactions in the hippocampus, and increasing DNA oxidation in the prefrontal cortex. BCP administration impeded the rise in the total number of astrocytes (P = .0286) and the DNA oxidation (P = .0286) in mice that received GAL. Hence, although BCP did not improve cognitive flexibility, it did produce a neuroprotective effect at the molecular and cellular level in the GAL model of aging.

      • Seed color effect on germination rate and antioxidant activity under salt stress in wheat

        Grain color distinguishes between the pigmentation of the outer layer of the kernel. It is known that environmental factors affects the production of anthocyanins and abiotic stresses like high light intensity, low temperature, high salinity and/or drought stress, and others increase their amounts. After 7 days the germination rate between yellow and dark-purple seeds were almost the same with and without stress (100% yellow seeds under stress and without stress germinated, 93.3% under stress and 96.6% without stress of purple seeds germinated), even though at the final stage the germination was almost the same, we can conclude base on our observations that the germination takes place at a different rate. We think that this might be related to the seed color, since the germination of purple seeds under salt stress started earlier than the yellow ones, until both reached the same point. The antioxidant activity was higher in seedlings from dark-purple seeds than the yellow ones, and they were higher under salt stress than without it, supporting our hypothesis that the purple color in wheat seeds works as a protection under salt stress. Furthermore, the qRT-pCR showed that some genes related to the flavonoid pathway were expressed or had more expression in the seedlings from dark-purple seeds than yellow ones.

        ELASTIC SURFACE PLASMON POLARITON SCATTERING: NEAR- AND FAR-FIELD INTERACTIONS

        Using a vectorial dipolar model for multiple surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) scattering, we investigate propagation and elastic (in-plane) scattering of SPP's excited in the wavelength range of 543–633nm at random nanostructured gold surfaces. The model makes use of a composed analytic Green dyadic which takes into account near- and far-field regions, with the latter being approximated by the part describing the scattering via excitation of SPP. Simultaneous SPP excitation and in-plane propagation inside square-random arrays of nanoparticles were observed with different density of particles, demonstrating the feasibility of the suggested approach. The composed Green dyadic represents an improvement of previous SPP simulations for random nanoparticles arrays since it permits SPP scattering simulations for more realistic systems with relatively large number of close, or even in contact, nanoparticles. Our results suggest that this numerical approach is quite promising for the quantitative description of light-SPP coupling and associated processes such as weak and strong SPP localization.

        Information needs and Information-seeking behaviour of auto mechanics in Siwdu, Cape Coast, Ghana

        The main objective of the study is to find out the level of information-seeking behaviour of auto mechanics working at Siwdu and its impact on the work they do. Two methods of data collection instruments were used; these included a questionnaire and interview schedule. The researchers personally administered fifty-three questionnaires of which forty-eight completed ones were received. Twelve (12) people were interviewed at their respective workshops. The respondents were registered members of Siwdu Auto Mechanic Association and the total number of sixty respondents used represented 20% of total number of members. Quantitative data obtained mainly from the questionnaire were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 20. Responses for the interview were analysed thematically. Some of the major findings are as follows: The majority of the respondents did not know how to get information from the library; some of the respondents preferred consulting their “Masters” for help; majority of the respondents had Android phones but did not know how to access relevant information; respondents were aware of the benefits of authentic information; and respondents recommended that Management of libraries should organise seminars and workshops for auto mechanics to enable them know how and where to access information. Information is needed by everybody to enhance efficiency therefore creating the awareness of the sources of information is a way of increasing productivity. Knowing the level of information-seeking behaviour of people in every manner of job is essential in the nation’s human resource development.

        Liquefaction of macroalgae Enteromorpha biomass for the preparation of biopolyols by using crude glycerol

        This article describes the liquefaction process of macroalgae Enteromorpha with the use of crude glycerolas a solvent and a reagent, aimed at obtaining of new bio-polyols, which are characterized with respect totheir chemical structure, physical and thermal properties. Six different biopolyols were prepared. Inorder to optimize the liquefaction of algal biomass for the best bio-polyol properties, two catalysts(sulfuric or orthophosphoric acid) and three process temperatures (120–180 C) were applied. Bio-polyoldisplaying the most advantageous properties (hydroxyl number 590 mg KOH/g and 86% biomassconversion) was obtained at 150 C in the presence of sulfuric acid as a catalyst.

        Evaluation of precipitation time of the aluminum salts adsorbed potentially frozen vaccines used in the Polish National Immunization Schedule for their pre-qualification before the administration

        Purpose: Vaccines adsorbed on aluminum adjuvants irreversibly lose potency after freezing and their safety is affected. To prevent the administration of such vaccines, the World Health Organization developed the Shake Test designed to determine whether adsorbed vaccines have been frozen or not. However, the Shake Test is difficult and time-consuming when routinely conducted at the place of vaccination. In this study, a modified shake test for prequalification of potentially frozen vaccines was elaborated. Materials and Methods: Vaccines used in the Polish Immunization Schedule were investigated and the analysis includes an assessment of precipitation time and the influence of the container type, amount and type of aluminum compound, and a volume of vaccine dose on the precipitation time. Results: Significant differences between the precipitation time of frozen and non-frozen vaccines routinely used in the Polish Immunization Schedule were observed. The precipitation time of all non-frozen vaccines was above 30 minutes. The longest precipitation time of frozen vaccines was 10 minutes. Conclusion: The finding of the study can be used in practice by the personnel administering vaccines to patients. Step-by-step recommendations for the preparation of the test have been proposed in the article.

      • Dialogues, Stories and Experiences. Brief Account of Philosophical Cafe in Mexico.

        In this article, we want to show part of the work done in Mexico in the area of philosophical cafes. For this we will take a look at the current situation of philosophy in Mexico and explain how from an educational reform suffered in 2008 there was a "return" to the reflection on the social role that the philosopher must play which impacted in a very important way on the exercise, promotion and systematization of philosophical cafes in the country. Also, we want to show the value of philosophical cafe to develop skills that allow to build an effective democratic environment. Similarly, note the relevance of the philosopher's work in the educational and social field. We will take as a reference some testimonies of colleagues who have been making philosophical cafes successfully for a couple of years and finally, we will talk about the challenges faced by philosophical cafes in Mexico as well as the outlook for the near future.

        Optimal utility supply network under demand uncertainty for operational risk assessment on a petrochemical industrial park

        A two-objective, two-stage mathematical model was developed considering demand uncertainty and operational risk assessment in constructing a utility supply network for steam generation and steam exchange in a petrochemical industrial park. This study defined two objective functions, the total economic cost and risk cost, where the demand uncertainty enhanced the reliability of the utility network design. The economic and risk cost present a holistic study, where the actual operation cost and additional costs in case of industrial operation failure can be determined. For this, two stages were established for both objective functions, a deterministic stage and a stochastic stage. The deterministic stage fixed the parameter values for the optimization problem, while the stochastic stage included the steam supply-demand uncertainty. A case study of the Yeosu industrial park in South Korea was used to show the feasibility of the proposed method, proposing five scenarios for risk assessment analyses. A Pareto set was drawn, showing the optimal values of the optimization scenarios studied. From the optimization analysis, scenario 5 showed the best utility supply network design providing a more realistic network with a balanced total economic cost and risk cost, which presented the lowest risk operation of all facilities. From scenario 5, the results showed a decrease in economic cost by 65.5% to 67.6% compared to the current situation considering the risk costs for the operational risk.
