      • In-situ functionalized biomass derived graphite-supported BiFeO3 for eradication of pollutants

        Deepeka, Deepeka,Paramdeep, Kaur,Jyoti, Jyoti,Sandeep, Bansal,Sonal, Singhal Techno-Press 2022 Advances in nano research Vol.13 No.6

A novel, green, versatile and magnetically retrievable BiFeO3/CDR (Bismuth ferrite/coriander) nanocomposites were fabricated via simple wet chemical method utilizing in situ functionalized, cheap coriander seed powder (CDR 5%, 10%, 15% and 20 wt%) as a fuel to enhance the efficiency of pristine BiFeO3. A comparative study was performed between BiFeO3/CDR and BiFeO3/CNT (Bismuth ferrite/carbon nanotubes) nanocomposites for the removal of various hazardous pollutants from waste water. The successful synthesis of the fabricated nanomaterials was monitored via FT-IR, Powder XRD, FE-SEM, CV, VSM, CHNS/O and XPS studies. The synthesized nanomaterials were employed for the oxidative degradation of Carbol fuchsin, Reactive black 5, Ciprofloxacin and Doxorubicin; adsorption of a pesticide malathion; and reduction studies for Para-nitrophenol (PNP). The fabricated nanomaterials (BiFeO3/CDR) showcased excellent efficiency and comparable results with (BiFeO3/CNT) for the removal of model pollutants. Moreover, synthesized green heterojunction was also testified for mixture of textile and pharmaceutical waste. Hence CDR can be utilized as a better alternative of CNTs.

Bone health after RRBSO among BRCA1/2 mutation carriers: a population-based study

        Helena Abreu do Valle,Paramdeep Kaur,Janice S. Kwon,Rona Cheifetz,Lesa Dawson,Gillian E. Hanley 대한부인종양학회 2022 Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Vol.33 No.4

Objective: Examine the risks of fractures and osteoporosis after risk-reducing bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (RRBSO) among women with mutations. Methods: In this retrospective population-based study in British Columbia, Canada, between 1996 to 2017, we compared risks of osteoporosis and fractures among women withmutations who underwent RRBSO before the age of 50 (n=329) with two age-matched groups without known mutations: 1) women who underwent bilateral oophorectomy (BO) (n=3,290); 2) women with intact ovaries who had hysterectomy or salpingectomy (n=3,290). Secondary outcomes were: having dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan, and bisphosphonates use. Results: The mean age at RRBSO was 42.4 years (range, 26–49) and the median follow-up for women with mutations was 6.9 years (range, 1.1–19.9). There was no increased hazard of fractures for women with mutations (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR]=0.80; 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.56–1.14 compared to women who had BO; aHR=1.02; 95% CI=0.65–1.61 compared to women with intact ovaries). Among women who had DEXA-scan, those with mutations had higher risk of osteoporosis (aHR=1.60; 95% CI=1.00–2.54 compared to women who had BO; aHR=2.49; 95% CI=1.44–4.28 compared to women with intact ovaries). Women with mutations were more likely to get DEXA-scan than either control groups, but only 46% of them were screened. Of the women withmutations diagnosed with osteoporosis, 36% received bisphosphonates. Conclusion: Women with mutations had higher risk of osteoporosis after RRBSO, but were not at increased risk of fractures during our follow-up. Low rates of DEXA-scan and bisphosphonates use indicate we can improve prevention of bone loss.

Design Aspects of a New Reliable Torsional Switch with Excellent RF Response

Rahul Gogna,Mayuri Jha,Gurjot Singh Gaba,Paramdeep Singh 한국전기전자재료학회 2016 Transactions on Electrical and Electronic Material Vol.17 No.1

This paper proposes a metal contact RF MEMS switch which utilizes a see-saw mechanism to acquire a switching action. The switch was built on a quartz substrate and involves vertical deflection of the beam under an applied actuation voltage of 5.46 volts over a signal line. The see-saw mechanism relieves much of the operation voltage required to actuate the switch. The switch has a stiff beam eliminating any stray mechanical forces. The switch has an excellent isolation of -90.9 dB (compared to - 58 dB in conventional designs [3]), the insertion of -0.2 dB, and a wide bandwidth of 88 GHz (compared to 40 GHz in conventional design [16]) making the switch suitable for wide band applications.

A Disparate Low Loss DC to 90 GHz Wideband Series Switch

Rahul Gogna,Mayuri Jha,Gurjot Singh Gaba,Paramdeep Singh 한국전기전자재료학회 2016 Transactions on Electrical and Electronic Material Vol.17 No.2

This paper presents design and simulation of wide band RF microswitch that uses electrostatic actuation for its operation. RF MEMS devices exhibit superior high frequency performance in comparison to conventional devices. Similar techniques that are used in Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) can be employed to design and fabricate MEMS devices and traditional batch-processing methods can be used for its manufacturing. The proposed switch presents a novel design approach to handle reliability concerns in MEMS switches like dielectric charging effect, micro welding and stiction. The shape has been optimized at actuation voltage of 14-16 V. The switch has an improved restoring force of 20.8 μN. The design of the proposed switch is very elemental and primarily composed of electrostatic actuator, abridge membrane and coplanar waveguide which are suspended over the substrate. The simple design of the switch makes it easy for fabrication. Typical insertion and isolation of the switch at 1 GHz is -0.03 dB and -71 dB and at 85 GHz it is -0.24 dB and -29.8 dB respectively. The isolation remains more than - 20 db even after 120 GHz. To our knowledge this is the first demonstration of a metal contact switch that shows such a high and sustained isolation and performance at W-band frequencies with an excellent figure-of merit (fc=1/2.pi.Ron.Cu =1,900 GHz). This figure of merit is significantly greater than electronic switching devices. The switch would find extensive application in wideband operations and areas where reliability is a major concern.

Persistent Post-radiotherapy Pain and Locoregional Recurrence in Head and Neck Cancer- Is There a Hidden Link?

( Preety Srivastava ),( Pamela Alice Kingsley ),( Himanshu Srivastava ),( Jaineet Sachdeva ),( Paramdeep Kaur ) 대한통증학회 2015 The Korean Journal of Pain Vol.28 No.2

Background: To explore the relationship between persistent post-radiotherapy pain and locoregional recurrence in head and neck cancer patients. Methods: Five year retrospective data was reviewed of 86 patients of head and neck cancer treated with radiotherapy who continued to have pain at 6 weeks after completion of treatment. At follow-up after 3 months, these patients were stratified into: Group A (n = 39) constituted of patients whose pain subsided and Group B (n = 47) were patients who continued to have persistent pain. Results: At median follow-up time of 25 months (range: 8.47), one patient (2.6%) and 18 (38.3%) patients in group A and group B had locoregional recurrence respectively (P < 0.0001). Furthermore, group B patients had higher mean pain score levels as compared to group A (P = 0.03). Patients in whom pain subsided within 3 months had statistically much greater disease-free survival in comparison to those with persistent pain (P < 0.0001). Conclusions: Pain in head and neck cancer is an important symptom and should be considered a poor prognostic factor. In the current study, the majority of the patients with persistent pain had recurrent disease as compared to those in whom pain subsided within 3 months of post-treatment. It is suggested that patients with persistent pain need more intense follow-up and should be investigated thoroughly to detect recurrence at an early stage to provide a better quality of life. Protection of hepatotoxicity using Spondias pinnata by prevention of ethanol-induced oxidative stress, DNA-damage and altered biochemical markers in Wistar rats

        Shoaib Shadab Iqbal,Md. Mujahid,Sayed Mohammad Kashif,Mohammad Khalid,Badruddeen,Muhammad Arif,Paramdeep Bagga,Juber Akhtar,Md. Azizur Rahman 한국한의학연구원 2016 Integrative Medicine Research Vol.5 No.4

Background Traditional systems of medicine use herbal drugs for hepatoprotection. Thus, the study was designed to evaluate the hepatoprotective and antioxidant effects of Spondias pinnata bark extracts against ethanol-induced liver injury in Wistar rats. Methods Group I animals were treated with 1 mL/kg 0.3% carboxymethyl cellulose and Group II with 12 mL/kg 50% ethanol for 8 consecutive days. Groups III–VII animals were first treated with 400 mg/kg petroleum ether extract, chloroform extract, acetone extract (AE), ethanol extract (EE), and 100 mg/kg silymarin, and then 12 mL/kg 50% ethanol orally after 2 hours pretreatment each day for 8 consecutive days. Six hours after the last dose, blood was withdrawn. The hepatoprotective activity was assessed by several biochemical and antioxidant parameters. It was accomplished by the histopathology and DNA fragmentation study of liver tissues. Results Treatment with S. pinnata extracts, mainly AE and EE significantly (p < 0.05–0.01) and dose-dependently prevented the ethanol-induced increase in serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, cholesterol, bilirubin, and malondialdehyde, and decrease in reduced glutathione, catalase, superoxide dismutase, and albumin. They also attenuated the ethanol-induced DNA damage. Hepatoprotective potential of the extract was less than that of standard drug silymarin. Results of the study were well supported by the histopathological observations. Conclusion S. pinnata extracts AE and EE possess a potent hepatoprotective effect against ethanol-induced liver injury in Wistar rats, and protect them from hepatotoxicity by prevention of ethanol-induced oxidative stress, DNA-damage and altered biochemical markers.
