Comparison of Gene Mutation Frequency in $Tradescantia$ Stamen Hair Cells Detected after Chernobyl and Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Accidents

        Panek, Agnieszka,Miszczyk, Justyna,Kim, Jin-Kyu,Cebulska-Wasilewska, Antonina Korean Society of Environmental Biology 2011 환경생물 : 환경생물학회지 Vol.29 No.4

Our aim was to investigate the genotoxicity of ambient air in the Krak$\acute{o}$w area after Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) accident and compare with results from Chernobyl fallout. For the detection of ambient air genotoxicity the technique for screening gene mutation frequency in somatic cells of the $Tradescantia$ stamen hairs ($Trad$-SH assay) was used. Since 11th of March 2011 (Fukushima NPP accident), several pots containing at least 15 shoots of bioindicating plants were exposed to ambient air at 2 sites in the Krak$\acute{o}$w surrounding area, one in the city center, and about 100 pots in a control site (in the glasshouse of the Institute of Nuclear Physics) Continuous screening of mutations was performed. Progenies of 371,090 cells exposed were analyzed. Mutation frequency obtained in the first 10 days has shown a mean control level (GMF*100=$0.06{\pm}0.01$). At scoring period related to influence of a potential Fukushima fallout, a significant increase of gene mutation frequencies above the control level was observed at each site in the range, 0.10~0.33 depending on the location, (mean value for all sites GMF*100=$0.19{\pm}0.05$) that was associated with a strong expression of toxic effects. In the reported studies following the Chernobyl NPP accident monitoring $in$ $situ$ of the ambient air genotoxicity was performed in the period since April $29^{th}$ till June $3^{rd}$ 1986 also with Trad-SH bioindicator. In general, mutation frequency increases due to Chernobyl fallout(GMF*100=$0.43{\pm}0.02$) were corresponding to fluctuation of radioactivity in the air reported from physical measures, and to published reports about increase in chromosome aberration levels. Although, recent data obtained from monitoring of the ambient air quality in the Krak$\acute{o}$w and surroundings are lower when compared to results reported after Chernobyl NPP accident, though results express a significant increase above the control level and also are corresponding with increased air radioactivity reported from physical measurements. Statistically significant in comparison to control increase in gene mutation rates and more prolonged than that after Chernobyl fallout increase of GMF was observed during the period following the Fukushima NPP failure.

Profiles of Problematic Smartphone Users : A Comparison of South Korean and U.S. College Students

        Elliot Panek,Hyoungkoo Khang,Yiben Liu,Young-Gil Chae 한국학술연구원 2018 Korea Observer Vol.49 No.3

There is increasing public concern in Asian countries over the effects of increased mobile media use on individuals and society. Chief among these concerns is the fear that young people are becoming addicted to internet-enabled “smartphones.” The current research seeks to determine the antecedents and consequences of smartphone addiction (i.e., problematic smartphone use), using samples from South Korea (N = 241) and the U.S. (N = 222). In both samples, we find that lower levels of self-control and higher levels of need for belonging are both uniquely associated with problematic smartphone use and that checking social media is the type of phone use exhibiting the strongest association with problematic use. This suggests that problematic smartphone use is not culturally specific, and that self-regulatory and social components both contribute to its development.

      • Pulsed Actuator with Combined Plunger Made of Carbon Steel and Permanent Magnet

Dolezel, Ivo,Panek, David,Ulrych, Bohus Journal of International Conference on Electrical 2012 Journal of international Conference on Electrical Vol.1 No.3

A special pulsed electromagnetic actuator is presented whose plunger consists of two parts made of carbon steel and permanent magnet, respectively. The actuator exhibits a high holding force and small consumption of energy. The movement of the plunger is controlled by short current pulses. The static characteristics and other operation properties of the device are modeled numerically.

Optical and scintillation properties of Ce3+-doped YGd2Al5-xGaxO12 (x=2,3,4) single crystal scintillators

        Chewpraditkul, W.,Bruza, P.,Panek, D.,Pattanaboonmee, N.,Wantong, K.,Chewpraditkul, W.,Babin, V.,Bartosiewicz, K.,Kamada, K.,Yoshikawa, A.,Nikl, M. Elsevier [etc.] 2016 Journal of luminescence Vol.169 No.1

The optical and scintillation properties of Ce3+-doped YGd2Al5-xGaxO12 (x=2,3,4) single crystals were investigated. With increasing Ga content in the garnet host, the 5d1 absorption and emission bands shift toward higher energy due to the decrease in the crystal field splitting of the 5d levels. Temperature dependences of absorption and emission spectra and of photoluminescence decays of both prompt and delayed components were measured. Light yield (LY) and its dependence on an amplifier shaping time were measured under excitation with γ-rays. High LY value of 38,000photons/MeV was obtained for a YGd2Al2Ga3O12:Ce sample. Scintillation decay was measured with an extended dynamical and temporal scale under the nanosecond-pulsed soft X-ray excitation. The relative content of the fastest component in the scintillation response increases with increasing Ga content.

Multimodal Oncological Therapy Comprising Stents, Brachytherapy, and Regional Chemotherapy for Cholangiocarcinoma

        ( Tomas Andrasina ),( Vlastimil Valek ),( Jiri Panek ),( Zdenek Kala ),( Igor Kiss ),( Stepan Tucek ),( Pavel Slampa ) 대한소화기기능성질환·운동학회 2010 Gut and Liver Vol.4 No.s1

Background/Aims: To prospectively evaluate our palliative management of unresectable cholangiocarcinoma (CC) treated with tailored multimodal oncological therapy. Methods: Between January 2005 and January 2010, 50 consecutive patients with unresectable CC and jaundice were palliated with percutaneous drainage. Forty-three patients underwent metallic- stent implantation followed by brachytherapy. Patients were divided into two arms: the intra-arterial chemotherapy arm (IA arm, n=17) consisted of patients treated with locoregional treatment (IA admission of Cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil, or chemoembolization with Lipiodol) and/or systemic chemotherapy, while the systemic chemotherapy arm (IV arm, n=23) included all the other patients, who were treated only with systemic chemotherapy. Results: In total, 78 metal self-expandable stents were placed. Hilar involvement with mass-forming and periductal infiltrating types of CC (84%) was predominant. The average number of percutaneous interventional procedures was 11.61 per patient (range, 4-35). The median overall survival from diagnosis of disease for all patients was 13.5 months (range, 11.0-18.8 months). The median overall survival times were 25.2 months (range, 15.2-31.3 months) and 11.5 months (range, 8.5-12.6 months) in the IA and IV arms, respectively (p<0.05). The 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates in the IA and IV arms were 88.2%, 52.9%, and 10.1% and 43.5%, 25.4, and 0%, respectively. There were no major complications (WHO III/IV) due to interventional procedures. Conclusions: We could reach acceptable prognosis in patients with unresectable CC using complex tailored oncological therapy. However, the main limitations of prolonging survival are performance status, patient compliance and the maintaining of biliary tract patency. (Gut Liver 2010;4(Suppl. 1):S82-88)

Self-association of bee propolis: effects on pharmaceutical applications

        Jiri Trousil,Martin Hruby,Jiri Panek,Jana Matějková,Jan Kucka,Petr Stepanek 한국약제학회 2014 Journal of Pharmaceutical Investigation Vol.44 No.1

Propolis is a resinous product collected byhoneybees from various plant sources; it is widely used intraditional medicine and has been reported to have a broadspectrum of pharmacological effects (i.e., antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects). Themost commonly used propolis formulations are gargles, inwhich propolis tinctures are diluted with water. The dilutionprocess is accompanied by nanoprecipitation, and thepropolis droplets are dispersed in the prepared gargle. Inthe present study, we investigated the dependence of theproperties of propolis nanodispersions on the method ofpreparation. The particle size was found to be approximately150 nm and was observed to decrease withincreasing dilution as the zeta potential of the particlesbecame more negative, which stabilized the dispersion. The dispersion dissolved upon alkalization and reprecipitatedduring acidification. The addition of salt destabilizedthe dispersion. The uptake of propolis from the dispersionwas modeled using 1-octanol and was found to be rapidand only slightly dependent on the nanoparticle size. Propolis susceptibility tests showed that the most effectivedispersion of propolis was tenfold-diluted EEP (P-80-10and JP-80-10). The disc diffusion method was used toevaluate the antibacterial activity of chosen dispersions ofpropolis against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coliand Candida albicans. Propolis samples with differentlocations of origin exhibited different effects against thestrain of C. albicans.
