For fabricating the fi ller materials for tissue re-growth, the primary concern should be focused on the immunocompatibility of the material. Lymphocyte T-cells and macrophages activate each other and induce immune suppressive eff ects. Polarized hydroxyapatite–barium titanate composite surfaces showed comparatively less macrophage activity than unpolarized surfaces. Lymphocytes isolated from human umbilical cord blood were cultured separately on both polarized and unpolarized samples. The macrophage with nitric oxide and myeloperoxidase showed less activity on polarized composite surfaces as compared to lipopolysaccharide of stimulated cells from which it can be inferred that the polarized composites showed immunocompatibility for which these materials can be used a preferred material in tissue engineering applications.

Short crested waves play an important role for planning and design of harbours. In this context a numerical simulation is carried out to evaluate wave tranquility inside a real harbour located in east coast of India. The annual offshore wave climate proximity to harbour site is established using Wave Model (WAM) hindcast wave data. The deep water waves are transformed to harbour front using a Near Shore spectral Wave model (NSW). A directional analysis is carried out to determine the probable incident wave directions towards the harbour. Most critical threshold wave height and wave period is chosen for normal operating conditions using exceedence probability analysis. Irregular random waves from various directions are generated confirming to Pierson Moskowitz spectrum at 20m water depth. Wave incident into inner harbor through harbor entrance is performed using Boussinesq Wave model (BW). Wave disturbance experienced inside the harbour and at various berths are analysed. The paper discusses the progresses took place in short wave modeling and it demonstrates application of wave climate for the evaluation of harbor tranquility using various types of wave models.

The oxidation of benzaldehyde, 3,4-dimethoxy benzaldehyde, p-methoxy benzaldehyde, m-$NO_2$-benzaldehyde, and m-chlorobenzaldehyde by pyridinium chlorochromate (Corey's reagent) are reported. Michaelis-Menten behaviour is observed. The rate determining step appears to be the decomposition of a complex of benzaldehyde with PCC either through a loss of $H^+$ or $H^-$ ions.

Background: To screen methanolic extracts of 26 commonly used Indian spices against ninespecies of uropathogenic bacteria (Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacterbaumannii, Citrobacter freundii, Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pro-teus mirabilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa), isolated from clinical samples of a tertiary carehospital for antibacterial activity. Methods: Bacterial strains were subjected to antibiotic sensitivity testing by Kirby–Bauer’sdisc diffusion method. Monitoring antibacterial potentiality of spice extracts was done bythe agar-well diffusion method with multidrug resistant (MDR) strains of nine uropathogens. Results: The Gram-positive (GP) bacteria E. faecalis and S. aureus were resistant to 16 of the21 antibiotics used. Among the Gram-negative (GN) bacteria, resistant patterns were A. bau-mannii and E. aerogenes to 12, C. freundii to 14, E. coli to 12, K. pneumoniae to 10, P. mirabilisto 11, and P. aeruginosa to 15 antibiotics of the 18 antibiotics used. The most effective 15spices, having at least 25–29 mm as the size of the zone of inhibition, were Allium cepa,Brassica juncea, Cinnamomum tamala, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Coriandrum sativum, Cuminumcyminum, Curcuma longa, Mentha spicata, Murraya koenigii, Nigella sativa, Papaver somniferum,Piper nigrum, S. aromaticum, Trachyspermum ammi, and Trigonella foenum for at least one ofthe GP or GN MDR bacterial strains used. Moderate control capacity was registered by ninespices, Curcuma amada, Foeniculum vulgare, Illicium verum, Mentha spicata, Papaver somniferum,Syzygium aromaticum, Trachyspermum ammi, Trigonella foenum, and Zingiber officinale. However, the best two spices for controlling all the pathogens used were C. zeylanicum and C. longa, with the highest value of 29 mm as the inhibition zone size. Conclusion: The most effective and unique 16 spice plants recorded for the in vitro control ofMDR uropathogens could further be pursued for the development of complementary andsupplementary medicine against MDR bacteria.

Most of the existing target tracking schemes based on proportional navigation guidance laws requireinformation on target’s acceleration to device their tracking strategies. Acceleration is computed or estimated continuouslyat each step to guide the interceptor. However, computation of acceleration is time consuming and oftenleads to inaccuracy, especially when the target is high maneuvering. Keeping this in view, a proportional navigationbased guidance law for the interception of a high maneuvering target is presented that does not require estimationof the target’s acceleration to generate guidance command. The method is based on anticipating target’s trajectoryusing simple linear extrapolation and rotational correction. The interceptor predicts next position of the target andcontinuously adjusts its acceleration command to move towards the future position of the target. This simple modificationnot only helps in improving the time to intercept but also reduces number of target misses. Further, it iseasier to implement for real time applications due to computational convenience. Performance of the method iscompared with some of the most efficient navigation guidance laws with respect to the time taken in interception, distance traversed and the path followed by the interceptor. In addition, proof of convergence is provided. Simulationresults are further verified through hardware implementation on wheeled mobile robots and results are quiteencouraging.

Well differentiated thyroid cancers (WDTC), including papillary (80%) and follicular (10%) types, are the most common endocrine cancers globally. Over the last few decades most the diagnosed cases have fallen into low risk categories. Radioactive iodine-131 (RAI) has an established role in reducing recurrence and improving the survival in high risk patients. In patients with primary tumor size <1 cm, RAI is not recommended by many thyroid societies. However, low risk WDTC has been an arena of major controversies, most importantly the role and dose of adjuvant RAI for remnant ablation to minimize chances of recurrence and improving survival. This review is an attempt to update readers about the previous and existing practice based on results of non-randomized trials and evolving trends fueled by recently published randomized studies.
