Effects of Combining of Smoking and Marinating on the Shelf Life of Anchovy Stored at 4℃

The quality of smoked and marinated anchovy was investigated in terms of sensory, chemical [total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), thiobarbituric acid (TBA), peroxide value (PV), fatty acids, free fatty acids (FFA), and pH] and microbiological parameters (total aerobic count (TVC), coliform, Escherichia coli, Salmonella,Staphylococcus aureus) during 7 months of storage. The results of sensory analyses showed that the total appearance,odor-taste, and texture scores decreased gradually during storage period. The results of the chemical analyses also correlated well with the sensory analyses apart from TVBN value. TBA significantly increased (p<0.05) from 1.9 to 4.25 MA/kg after the storage of 6 month. Peroxide value (POV) showed significant fluctuations (p<0.05) during the storage period. Initial TVC of 3.8 log CFU/g increased to 6.2 log CFU/g at the end of storage period. According to results obtained from sensory, chemical, and microbiological analyses, shelf life of this product was about 6 month.

Objective: The aim of the study was to compare the opening and protrusive mandibular movements between Class I and Class II malocclusions in healthy adolescents by clinical and axiographic evaluations. Methods: Mechanical axiography was performed on non-orthodontically treated, temporomandibular disorder (TMD)-free adolescents (12 - 16 years) with Class I (n = 38, 16 boys, 22 girls) or Class II (n = 40, 19 boys, 21 girls) malocclusion. Opening and protrusive movements were measured clinically and axiographically. Intergroup comparisons were evaluated by t-tests. Results: In opening movement, the maximum clinical opening capacity was significantly different (p ${\leq}$ 0.05) between the groups. In protrusive movement, the Class II group had significantly greater maximum clinical protrusion (p < 0.001) and maximum axiographic protrusive length (p < 0.01) than the Class I group. No significant difference in the other opening and protrusive axiographic measurements was observed. Conclusions: TMD-free adolescents with Class II malocclusion have increased protrusive capacity compared with TMD-free adolescents with Class I malocclusion; however, the detected differences could be normal variations during adolescence.
Effect of Mirtazapine on MNNG-Induced Gastric Adenocarcinoma in Rats

Objective: In this study, anticancer effects of mirtazapine on rats were investigated in an adenocarcinoma model induced by N-methyl-N-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) and compared with those of cisplatin. Materials and Methods: For this purpose, 10 mg/kg doses of mirtazapine were administered orally to one group of rats, while 1 mg/kg doses of cisplatin were administered intraperitoneally to another group. At 1 hour after administration, 200 mg/kg doses of MNNG were given orally to both groups. MNNG administration was repeated once every 10 days through 3 months, after which period, gastric tissue was taken and pathologically evaluated. Results: Mirtazapine prevented adenocarcinoma induction by MNNG in rats to a greater extent than cisplatin. Some of the rats receiving cisplatin demonstrated severe dysplasia in gastric samples and others exhibited mild dysplasia. Rats given mirtazapine were not observed to suffer severe dysplasia, only mild dysplasia being observed. Conclusion: For adenocarcinoma induced by MNNG on rats, mirtazapine was determined more effective than cisplatin. In order to make statement about mechanism of anticancer activity of mirtazapine, wider studies are required.
