Readiness and Challenges for Applying IFRS 17 (Insurance Contracts): The Case of Jordanian Insurance Companies

OWAIS, Walid Omar,DAHIYAT, Ahmad Abdelrahim Korea Distribution Science Association 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.3

This paper examines the readiness of Jordanian insurance companies to apply the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS 17), and the challenges of its application. The study developed a questionnaire based on prior related studies, and in the light of IFRS 17, the study used different statistical methods and techniques such as means, standard deviation, and t-test to achieve its goals. The results indicate that Jordanian insurance companies are not ready to apply IFRS 17, for several reasons. Most importantly, insurance companies have a low level of ability to define the scope of IFRS 17, study the impact of IFRS 17 application to financial reports, and develop new internal monitoring methods to apply IFRS 17. As for the challenges for applying IFRS 17, the biggest is the data challenge, followed by the challenges of first-time implementation, systems, and results and presentation. Finally, this paper advocates that it has become important for Jordanian insurance companies and supervisory bodies to enhance their readiness to apply IFRS 17 within a scheduled time framework and by taking several preparatory steps: performing simulations consisting of procedures to deal with IFRS 17 requirements and the impact on financial reports, and helping human resources with familiarization and application of IFRS 17.

A TYPE OF FRACTIONAL KINETIC EQUATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE (p,q)-EXTENDED τ-HYPERGEOMETRIC AND CONFLUENT HYPERGEOMETRIC FUNCTIONS

Owais Khan,Nabiullah Khan,Junesang Choi,Kottakkaran Sooppy Nisar 경남대학교 기초과학연구소 2021 Nonlinear Functional Analysis and Applications Vol.26 No.2

During the last several decades, a great variety of fractional kinetic equations involving diverse special functions have been broadly and usefully employed in describing and solving several important problems of physics and astrophysics. In this paper, we aim to find solutions of a type of fractional kinetic equations associated with the $(p,q)$-extended $\tau$-hypergeometric function and the $(p,q)$-extended $\tau$-confluent hypergeometric function, by mainly using the Laplace transform. It is noted that the main employed techniques for this chosen type of fractional kinetic equations areLaplace transform, Sumudu transform, Laplace and Sumudu transforms, Laplace and Fourier transforms, $P_\chi$-transform, and an alternative method.

Hardness of AISI Type 410 Martensitic Steels After High Temperature Irradiation via Nanoindentation

        Owais Ahmed Waseem,정종률,박병국,맹철수,이명구,류호진 대한금속·재료학회 2017 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.23 No.6

The hardness of irradiated AISI type 410 martensitic steel, which is utilized in structural and magnetic componentsof nuclear power plants, is investigated in this study. Proton irradiation of AISI type 410 martensitic steel sampleswas carried out by exposing the samples to 3 MeV protons up to a 1.0 × 1017p/cm2fluence level at a representativenuclear reactor coolant temperature of 350 °C. The assessment of deleterious effects of irradiation on the microstructureand mechanical behavior of the AISI type 410 martensitic steel samples via transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy and cross-sectional nano-indentation showed no significant variation in themicroscopic or mechanical characteristics. These results ensure the integrity of the structural and magnetic componentsof nuclear reactors made of AISI type 410 martensitic steel under high-temperature irradiation damagelevels up to approximately 5.2 × 10-3dpa.

The Impact of Robotics on Employment and Motivation of Employees in the Service Sector, with Special Reference to Health Care

Mohammed Owais Qureshi,Rumaiya Sajjad Syed 한국산업안전보건공단 산업안전보건연구원 2014 Safety and health at work Vol.5 No.4

Background: The economy is being lifted by the new concept of robotics, but we cannot be sure of all the possible benefits. At this early stage, it therefore becomes important to find out the possible benefits/ limitations associated with robotics, so that the positives can be capitalized, established, and developed further for the employment and motivation of employees in the health care sector, for overall economic development. The negatives should also be further studied and mitigated. Methods: This study is an exploratory research, based on secondary data, such as books on topics related to robotics, websites, public websites of concerned departments for data and statistics, journals, newspapers and magazines, websites of health care providers, and different printed materials (brochures, etc). Results: The impact of robotics has both positive and negative impacts on the employment and motivation of employees in the retail sector. So far, there has been no substantial research done into robotics, especially in the health care sector. Conclusion: Replacing employees with robots is an inevitable choice for organizations in the service sector, more so in the health care sector because of the challenging and sometimes unhealthy working environments, but, at the same time, the researchers propose that it should be done in a manner that helps in improving the employment and motivation of employees in this sector.

A combinatorial approach for the synthesis and analysis of Al<i>x</i>Cr<i>y</i>Mo<i>z</i>NbTiZr high-entropy alloys: Oxidation behavior

Waseem, Owais Ahmed,Auyeskhan, Ulanbek,Lee, Hyuck Mo,Ryu, Ho Jin Published for the Materials Research Society by th 2018 Journal of materials research Vol.33 No.19

<▼1><B>Abstract</B><P/></▼1><▼2><P>To overcome the limited feasibility of various refractory high-entropy alloys (HEAs) due to the presence of (i) very dense elements (W and Ta), (ii) costly elements (Hf and Ta), and (iii) oxidation prone elements (V) in them, Al<I>x</I>Cr<I>y</I>Mo<I>z</I>NbTiZr HEAs were prepared via arc-melting. Considering the critical nature of oxidation resistance in high-temperature applications, HEAs were characterized to form a combinatorial library of microstructural and oxidation behavior. Al<I>x</I>Cr<I>y</I>Mo<I>z</I>NbTiZr HEAs revealed multiphase microstructures consisting of intermetallic phases along with BCC matrices. Mass loss and porous microstructures were obtained in Mo-rich HEAs after oxidation at 1000 °C for 1 h. The presence of Al enhanced the oxidation resistance and developed a protective oxide layer on the HEAs. Al30Cr10-NTZ exhibited promising potential for use in high temperature applications, as it showed an oxidation time exponent of ∼0.5 and a dense and continuous oxide layer.</P></▼2>

      • The effect of Ti on the sintering and mechanical properties of refractory high-entropy alloy TixWTaVCr fabricated via spark plasma sintering for fusion plasma-facing materials

Waseem, Owais Ahmed,Lee, Junho,Lee, Hyuck Mo,Ryu, Ho Jin Elsevier 2018 Materials chemistry and physics Vol.210 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The synthesis and characterization of TixWTaVCr alloys for high-temperature and fusion plasma-facing applications are presented in this study. Specimens of TixWTaVCr containing 0 to 7 at% Ti were prepared via spark plasma sintering of an elemental powder mixture at 1500 °C. Characterization of sintered samples via X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy revealed increased formation of a BCC solid solution due to the addition of up to 7 at% Ti. Mechanical characterizations of the TixWTaVCr alloys indicate that they are harder and stronger than several reported high-entropy alloys. The alloy that contained 7 at% Ti also exhibited improved oxidation resistance in air at 1000 °C. Its improved strength, hardness, and oxidation resistance suggest future applications for this high-entropy alloy in high-temperature and nuclear applications.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Reaction sintering of powder mixture was used to develop refractory HEA. </LI> <LI> The increase in Ti content produces W-rich and near equiatomic BCC phases. </LI> <LI> TixWTaVCr shows superior mechanical properties than several other HEAs. </LI> <LI> The TixWTaVCr sample having 7 at.% Ti also shows better oxidation resistant. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • Toughening of a low-activation tungsten alloy using tungsten short fibers and particles reinforcement for fusion plasma-facing applications

Waseem, Owais Ahmed,Ryu, Ho Jin IOP 2019 Nuclear fusion. Fusion nucléaire. &n.Illiga Vol.59 No.2

<P>Novel low-activation tungsten (W) alloy-based composites are investigated here. A W0.5TaTiVCr matrix (M) was selected due to its promising strength (more than two times that of pure W) and low activation properties. W short fibers (Wsf) or W particles (Wp) were embedded in W0.5TaTiVCr in an effort to improve the fracture strain. Unlike W-fiber-reinforced-W-matrix-composites, near-isotropic composites with nearly full densities were developed via the simple fabrication method (as compared to hot isostatic pressing and chemical vapor infiltration) of elemental powder mixing followed by spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 1600 °C. Microstructural characterization reveals randomly dispersed and well-bonded W reinforcements with the matrix, which shows the body-centered cubic (BCC) crystal structure and multiple phases. The fracture strain of W0.5TaTiVCr under compressive stress shows a two-fold improvement from ~4.3% to ~9.3% due to the addition of 10 wt.%Wp while maintaining a high yield strength of ~1900 MPa. An addition of 50 wt.%Wp results in ~16% fracture strain. The addition of 10 wt.%Wsf results in four times higher fracture toughness (from ~7.7 to ~29.6 MPa · m1/2). The mechanisms determining the improvement in the fracture strain and toughness due to the addition of the Wsf and Wp are discussed based on the fracture surface analysis.</P>

The Relationship Between Intellectual Capital and Accounting Conservatism: A Case Study in Jordan

Walid Omar OWAIS 한국유통과학회 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.4

The purpose of this study is to assess how accounting conservatism is practiced in the Jordanian pharmaceuticals and medical industry. It assesses the association between accounting conservatism and intellectual capital (IC) in this industry. This study measures IC performance using the market price per share less book value. Accounting conservatism is measured using the book-to-price ratio, and the data was collected from company annual reports and the Amman Stock Exchange (ASE) website. The data was collected for the period of six years (2014 to 2019). The sample was made up of four companies in the industry listed in the ASE. The data was analyzed using the SPSS program though the ordinary least squares regression model to assess how accounting conservatism is associated with IC. The findings indicate a negative association with companies having higher IC performance and reporting lower accounting conservatism. IC is applied more in these companies, although it might be lower than in other companies in other sectors. This study provides empirical evidence on how IC is applied in the industry and how it might be negatively associated with accounting conservatism. Findings indicate the need for more effective policies to promote recognition of intangible assets in the sector.
