The authors report a rare complication regarding the case of an 18-year-old female with bilateral osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) secondary to the treatment and hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) of an acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The patient underwent a bilateral necrotic bone debridement and core decompression (CD) surgery with injectable synthetic bone graft, which unfortunately caused a pulmonary injectable bone graft substitute embolism.
El concepto de justicia en el Discurso de mivida del capitan Alonso de Contreras
( Oriol Miro Marti ) 고려대학교 스페인·라틴아메리카연구소 2013 스페인라틴아메리카연구 Vol.6 No.2

<P>All electron relativistic density functional theory (DFT) based calculations using numerical atom-centered orbitals have been carried out to explore the relative stability, atomic, and electronic structure of a series of stoichiometric TiO2 anatase nanoparticles explicitly containing up to 1365 atoms as a function of size and morphology. The nanoparticles under scrutiny exhibit octahedral or truncated octahedral structures and span the 1-6 nm diameter size range. Initial structures were obtained using the Wulff construction, thus exhibiting the most stable (101) and (001) anatase surfaces. Final structures were obtained from geometry optimization with full relaxation of all structural parameters using both generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and hybrid density functionals. Results show that, for nanoparticles of a similar size, octahedral and truncated octahedral morphologies have comparable energetic stabilities. The electronic structure properties exhibit a clear trend converging:to the bulk values as the size of the nanoparticles increases but with a marked influence of the density functional employed. Our results suggest that electronic structure properties, and hence reactivity, for the largest anatase nanoparticles considered in this study will be similar to those exhibited by even larger mesoscale particles or by bulk systems. Finally, we present compelling evidence that anatase nanoparticles become effectively bulklike when reaching a size of similar to 20 nm diameter.</P>
Pneumonia in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Restrepo, Marcos I.,Sibila, Oriol,Anzueto, Antonio The Korean Academy of Tuberculosis and Respiratory 2018 Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases Vol.81 No.3
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a frequent comorbid condition associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Pneumonia is the most common infectious disease condition. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the impact of pneumonia in patients with COPD. We will evaluate the epidemiology and factors associated with pneumonia. We are discussing the clinical characteristics of COPD that may favor the development of infections conditions such as pneumonia. Over the last 10 years, there is an increased evidence that COPD patients treated with inhaled corticosteroids are at increased risk to develp pneumonia. We will review the avaialbe information as well as the possible mechanism for this events. We also discuss the impact of influenza and pneumococcal vaccination in the prevention of pneumonia in COPD patients.

Private tutoring and academic achievement in Korea: An approach through PISA-2006
Álvaro Choi,Jorge Calero,Josep-Oriol Escardíbul 한국교육개발원 2012 KEDI Journal of Educational Policy Vol.9 No.2
Although not exclusive to the Republic of Korea’s educational system, the pervasiveness of private tutoring, and its consequences, serve to distinguish it from systems operated in other countries. This paper quantifies the impact of time spent on private tutoring on the performance of students in the three competence fields assessed in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). Instrumental variables are applied in a multilevel framework to address endogeneity. Our results indicate that the impact of time dedicated to private tutoring on academic performance depends on the particular competence: positive for mathematics, positive but decreasing for reading, and non-significant for science.

<P>Conventional density functionals with either the local density approximation (LDA) or the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) form of the exchange-correlation potential fail to describe the electronic structure of a large number of metal oxides. Both the LDA and the GGA grossly underestimate the band gaps of these materials which severely affect the description of oxygen vacancy point defect states in reduced samples. To find a pragmatic approach to simultaneously and accurately describe the atomic and electronic structures of the most common TiO2 polymorphs, we explore the effect of the percentage of exact, non-local, Fock exchange on the electronic structure of stoichiometric rutile and anatase. From these results, a modified hybrid functional is proposed to properly describe the atomic structures, formation enthalpies and electronic structures of rutile and anatase and, at the same time, the results of reduced samples are also in good agreement with the available experimental results. The present approach can be safely used to accurately describe numerous TiO2 based materials containing defects or realistic nanoparticles for which the required large unit cells or system sizes hinder the use of GW related techniques.</P>
Reconfigurable chiroptical nanocomposites with chirality transfer from the macro- to the nanoscale
Kim, Yoonseob,Yeom, Bongjun,Arteaga, Oriol,Jo Yoo, Seung,Lee, Sang-Gil,Kim, Jin-Gyu,Kotov, Nicholas A. Nature Publishing Group, a division of Macmillan P 2016 NATURE MATERIALS Vol.15 No.4
<P>Nanostructures with chiral geometries exhibit strong polarization rotation. However, achieving reversible modulation of chirality and polarization rotation in device-friendly solid-state films is difficult for rigid materials. Here, we describe nanocomposites, made by conformally coating twisted elastic substrates with films assembled layer-by-layer from plasmonic nanocolloids, whose nanoscale geometry and rotatory optical activity can be reversibly reconfigured and cyclically modulated by macroscale stretching, with up to tenfold concomitant increases in ellipticity. We show that the chiroptical activity at 660nm of gold nanoparticle composites is associated with circular extinction from linear effects. The polarization rotation at 550nm originates from the chirality of nanoparticle chains with an S-like shape that exhibit a non-planar buckled geometry, with the handedness of the substrate's macroscale twist determining the handedness of the S-like chains. Chiroptical effects at the nexus of mechanics, excitonics and plasmonics open new operational principles for optical and optoelectronic devices from nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes and other nanoscale components.</P>
Elimination of MMC Differential Currents via a feedback LTI control system
Abel Ferreira,Rodrigo Teixeira-Pinto,Oriol Gomis-Bellmunt,Miquel Teixido 전력전자학회 2015 ICPE(ISPE)논문집 Vol.2015 No.6
The interesting features of the modular multilevel converter makes it the VSC solution of choice by the manufactures in the HVDC field. Far more complex than the older VSC solutions, the MMC generates less harmonics and losses. One of its drawbacks is that, internally, this topology creates a double line frequency current component which flows between phases. This work describes the origin of the double line frequency current and presents, step-by-step stationary reference frame circulating current suppress controller (S-CCSC) as a feedback linear time invariant (LTI) control to cancel out this source of additional losses. The proposed S-CCSC solution was compared to the previously proposed 2ω rotating reference frame CCSC (R-CCSC). Both solutions show very fast results, removing almost instantaneously the second harmonic current without leaving any evidence of them in steady state. Moreover, the LTI solution is demonstrated to demand 33% less computational time, which is a clear advantage from a practical application perspective.
