Control of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in contaminated alfalfa silage: Effects of silage additives

        Ogunade, I.M.,Kim, D.H.,Jiang, Y.,Weinberg, Z.G.,Jeong, K.C.,Adesogan, A.T. American Dairy Science Association 2016 Journal of dairy science Vol.99 No.6

This study was conducted to examine if adding microbial inoculants or propionic acid to alfalfa silages contaminated with Escherichia coli O157:H7 would inhibit the growth of the pathogen during or after ensiling. Alfalfa forage was harvested at the early bloom stage, wilted to a dry matter concentration of 54%, chopped to 19-mm lengths, and ensiled after treatment with one of the following:(1) distilled water (control); (2) 1 x 10(5) cfu/g of E. coli O157:H7 (EC); (3) EC and 1 x 10(6) cfu/g of Lactobacillus plantarum (EC+LP); (4) EC and 1 x 10(6) cfu/g of Lactobacillus buchneri (EC+LB); and (5) EC and 2.2 g/kg of propionic acid (EC+PA). Each treatment was ensiled in quadruplicate in laboratory silos for 0, 3, 7, 16, and 100 d and analyzed for EC counts, pH, and organic acids. In addition, samples from d 100 were analyzed for chemical composition, ammonia-N, counts of yeasts and molds, and aerobic stability. Escherichia coli O157:H7 was detected in all silages until d 7, but by d 16 it was not detected in those treated with EC+LB and EC+LP, though it was still detected in EC and EC+PA silages. However, by d 100, the pathogen was not detected in any silage. The rate of pH decrease to 5.0 was fastest for the EC+LP silage (7 d), followed by the EC+LB silage (16 d). Nevertheless, all silages had attained a pH of or less than 5.0 by d 100. The rapid decrease in pH in EC+LP and EC+LB silages was observed due to higher lactate and acetate concentrations, respectively, relative to the other silages during the early fermentation phase (d 3-16). Propionic acid was only detected in the EC+PA silage. Yeast counts were lowest in EC+LB and EC+PA silages. Subsamples of all d-100 silages were reinoculated with 1 x 10(5) cfu/g of EC immediately after silo opening. When the pathogen was subsequently enumerated after 168 h of aerobic exposure, it was not detected in silages treated with EC+PA, EC+LB, or EC+LP, which all had pH values less than 5.0. Whereas the EC silage had a pH value of 5.4 and 2.3 log cfu/g of the pathogen. Certain bacterial inoculants can hasten the inhibition of E. coli O157:H7 during ensiling, such as propionic acid, and they can also prevent its growth on silage contaminated with the pathogen after ensiling.

      • University Sports, Spirituality and Social Development in Nigeria

        ( Raymond Ogunade ),( A. E. Talabi ) 한국체육학회 2015 국제스포츠과학 학술대회 Vol.2015 No.1

Purpose: This work set out to examine the place of sport and spirituality in selected Nigerian universities and how that can impact humanity Method: The methodology adopted in this work is historical, comparative and analytical approaches. Result: We observed sport as an anticipated channel of climbing social ladders among several students which serves as a source of hope for many of them, especially those from a rather humble background. We also discovered that, sport holds the answer to the much needed unity and friendliness among students on campuses. Conclusion: It has served to promote quality of life after school ,as well as the development of society through economic empowerment of graduates, who would have otherwise become unemployed youths and source of crimes in the society. This prima place of sport in our existence makes it very necessary to accord adequate priority to the study of sport and spirituality in our Curriculum, as it promotes humanity and develops our society.

Tropical plant supplementation effects on the performance and parasite burden of goats

        Juan J. Romero,Miguel A. Zarate,Ibukun M. Ogunade,Kathy g. Arriola,Adegbola T. Adesogan 아세아·태평양축산학회 2018 Animal Bioscience Vol.31 No.2

Objective: Examine the effects of supplementing bahiagrass hay (BG) with potentially anthelmintic quantities of hays of perennial peanut (PEA) or sericea lespedeza (LES) or seeds of velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens L.; MUC) or papaya (PAP) on the intake and nutritive value (Experiment 1), and the performance and parasite burden (Experiment 2) of goats. Methods: In Experiment 1, 38 male goats (27.4±5.7 kg body weight) were randomly assigned to each of 5 treatments: i) BG alone and BG plus; ii) PEA; iii) LES; iv) MUC; and v) PAP. Goats were fed for ad libitum consumption and adapted to the diets for 14 d followed by 7 d of measurement. The PEA, LES, MUC (50%, 50%, and 10% of the diet dry matter [DM], respectively), and PAP (forced-fed at 10 g/d) were fed at rates that would elicit anthelmintic effects. In Experiment 2, goats remained in the same treatments but were allocated to 15 pens (3 pens per treatment) from d 22 to 63. All goats were infected with parasites by grazing an infected bahiagrass pasture from 0800 to 1500 h daily and then returned to the pens. Results: Dry matter intake tended to be greater in goats fed PEA and LES than those fed BG (757 and 745 vs 612 g/d, respectively). Digestibility of DM (59.5% vs 54.9%) and organic matter (60.8% vs 56.0%) were greater in goats fed MUC vs BG, respectively. In Experiment 2, feeding PAP, LES, and PEA to goats reduced nematode fecal egg counts by 72%, 52%, and 32%, reduced abomasal adult worm counts by 78%, 52%, and 42%, and decreased plasma haptoglobin concentrations by 42%, 40%, and 45% relative to feeding BG alone, respectively. Conclusion: Supplementation with PEA, LES, and PAP decreased the parasite burden of goats but did not increase their performance. PAP was the most effective anthelmintic supplement.
