Comparing the Global and Merged with the Local and Separate: On a Downside to the Integration of Regions and Nations

Oded Stark 대외경제정책연구원 2015 East Asian Economic Review Vol.19 No.4

This paper looks at the integration of regions and nations through the prism of the merger of populations (societies). The paper employs a particular index of social stress. Stylized examples of the merging of two populations suggest that with integration, the social stress index will increase. The examples form the basis for the development of new formulas for calculating the social stress of an integrated population as a function of the levels of social stress of the constituent populations when apart. The formulas reveal that the social stress of an integrated population is higher than the sum of the levels of social stress of the constituent populations when apart. This raises the distinct possibility that the merging of populations may be a social liability: integration may fail to give the populace a sense of improved wellbeing.

      • The influence of nonlinear damping on the response of a piezoelectric cantilever sensor in a symmetric or asymmetric configuration

Oded Gottlieb,Giuseppe Habib,Emanuel Fainshtein,Kai-Dietrich Wolf 국제구조공학회 2022 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.30 No.3

We investigate the influence of nonlinear viscoelastic damping on the response of a cantilever sensor covered by piezoelectric layers in a symmetric or asymmetric configuration. We formulate an initial-boundary-value problem which consistently incorporates both geometric and material nonlinearities including the effect of viscoelastic damping which cannot be ignored for micro- and nano-mechanical sensor operation in a vacuum environment. We employ an asymptotic multiplescales methodology to yield the system nonlinear frequency response near its primary resonance and employ a model-based estimation procedure to deduce the system damping backone curve from controlled experiments in vacuum. We discuss the effect of nonlinear damping on sensor applications for scanning probe microscopy.

An Adverse Social Welfare Effect of Quadruply Gainful Trade

Oded Stark,Grzegorz Kosiorowski 대외경제정책연구원 2020 East Asian Economic Review Vol.24 No.3

Acknowledging that individuals dislike having low relative income renders trade less attractive when seen as a technology that integrates two economies by merging separate social spheres into one. We define a “trembling trade” as a situation in which gains from trade are less than losses in relative income, with the result that global social welfare is reduced. We show that a “trembling trade” can arise even when trade is more gainful in four ways: through trade the absolute income of everyone increases, the income gap in both economies is reduced, as is the income gap between the trading economies. However, trade brings populations, economies, or markets that were not previously connected closer together in social space. As a consequence, separate social spheres merge, and people’s social space and their comparators are altered. Assuming that people like high (absolute) income and dislike low relative income, the aggregate increase in unhappiness caused by the trade-induced escalation in relative deprivation can result in a negative overall impact of trade on (utilitarian-measured) social welfare, if the absolute income gains are not large enough to mitigate the relative income losses.

      • Big Data Performance Evaluation Analysis Using Apache Pig

Gal Engelberg,Oded Koren,Nir Perel 보안공학연구지원센터 2016 International Journal of Software Engineering and Vol.10 No.11

While companies' usage of big data products increases, the question of which big data architecture is the most suitable to the company's needs is rising. This study presents an approach of running multiple processes which simulates preliminary data processing of sale transactions input dataset using Apache Pig, in order to find the best performing big data environment in terms of decentralization level over the HDFS. The case study approach can provide companies an additional tool for understanding the required investment on hardware or cloud computing resources. We analyze which decentralization level achieves the best processing time, and explore the behavior of performance's change according to the change in decentralization level and performance change according to the change in the size of the input dataset. The case study's insights are: When processing the same data flow over the same input dataset, processing time performance is better as long as decentralization level increases; As long as decentralization level increases the change between performances decreases significantly; Processing the same Pig data flow under the same scale of decentralization level over large input dataset performs better then processing it over a smaller input dataset - in terms of processing time per volume unit; As blocks-data nodes ratio becomes higher, the processing time becomes longer, and vice versa.

      • Pig Vs. Hive Use Case Analysis

Danielle Kendal,Oded Koren,Nir Perel 보안공학연구지원센터 2016 International Journal of Database Theory and Appli Vol.9 No.12

Corporations are changing their practices to data-driven big data initiatives, as big data analytics has provided companies with the ability to grow their businesses and increase competition. As the importance of data analytics grew, so accordingly did the size of the data to analyze, thus demanding a more powerful data platform. This paper shows a case study of two High Level Query Languages that are constructed on top of Hadoop MapReduce; Pig and Hive. By creating a query in each query language, both resulting in an identical output, and by running each query 30 times on 2 different sized files (120 runs total), this comparison provides a statistically significant conclusion.

Design of Low Update Rate Phase Locked Loops with Application to Carrier Tracking in OFDM Systems

Raphaeli Dan,Yaniv Oded The Korea Institute of Information and Commucation 2005 Journal of communications and networks Vol.7 No.3

In this paper, we develop design procedures for carrier tracking loop for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems or other systems of blocked data. In such communication systems, phase error measurements are made infrequent enough to invalidate the traditional loop design methodology which is based on analog loop design. We analyze the degradation in the OFDM schemes caused by the tracking loop and show how the performance is dependent on the rms phase error, where we distinguished between the effect of the variance in the average phase over the symbol and the effect of the phase change over the symbol. We derive the optimal tracking loop including optional delay in the loop caused by processing time. Our solution is general and includes arbitrary phase noise apd additive noise spectrums. In order to guarantee a well behaved solution, we have to check the design against margin constraints subject to uncertainties. In case the optimal loop does not meet the required margin constraints subjected to uncertainties, it is shown how to apply a method taken from control theory to find a controller. Alternatively, if we restrict the solution to first or second order loops, we give a simple loop design procedure which may be sufficient in many cases. Extensions of the method are shown for using both pilot symbols and data symbols in the OFDM receiver for phase tracking. We compare our results to other methods commonly used in OFDM receivers and we show that a large improvement can be gained.

Towards standardization of compact data center switches

        Gonzalo Guelbenzu,Nicola Calabretta,Oded Raz 한국통신학회 2017 ICT Express Vol.3 No.2

Data Centers, the essential infrastructure for the increasing amount of cloud applications, are required to expand in number of devices even further. However, the scaling is limited by both space and power constraints. It is therefore essential to shrink the size and power consumption of the devices. This works explores how On-Board Optics provides a solution for data center switches. We experimentally demonstrate a proof-of-concept data center switch with integrated On-Board Optics modules, power consumption below 150W and measuring only 0.25U. We further discuss the standards required to fully exploit this technology, and the future of On-Board Optics.

An analysis of 77 cases of pancreatic injuries at a level one trauma center: Outcomes of conservative and surgical treatments

        Harbi Khalayleh,Ashraf Imam,Oded Cohen-Arazi,Pikkel Yoav,Brigitte Helou,Bala Miklosh,Alon J. Pikarsky,Abed Khalaileh 한국간담췌외과학회 2022 Annals of hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery Vol.26 No.2

Backgrounds/Aims: Traumatic pancreatic injury (TPI) is rare as an isolated injury. There is a trend to perform conservative treatment even in patients with complete duct dissection and successful treatment. This study reviewed our 20 years of experience in the management of TPI and assessed patient outcomes according to age group and treatment strategy. Methods: A retrospective analysis of patients diagnosed and treated with TPI at a level-I trauma center from 2000–2019. Patients were divided into two groups: adults and pediatrics. Conservative treatment cases were subjected to subgroup analysis. Level of evidence: IV. Results: Of a total of 77 patients, the mean age was 24.89 ± 15.88 years. Fifty-six (72.7%) patients had blunt trauma with motor vehicle accident. Blunt trauma was the predominant mechanism in 42 (54.5%) patients. Overall, 38 (49.4%) cases had grade I or II injury, 24 (31.2%) had grade III injury, and 15 (19.5%) had grade IV injury. A total of 30 cases had non-operative management (NOM). Successful NOM was observed in 16 (20.8%) cases, including eight (32.0%) pediatric cases and eight (15.4%) adult cases. Higher American association for the surgery of trauma (AAST) grade of injury was associated with NOM failure (16.7% for grade I/II, 100% for grade III, and 66.7% for grade IV injury; p = 0.001). An independent factor for NOM failure was female sex (69.2% in females vs. 29.4% in males; p = 0.03). Conclusions: High AAST grade TPI is associated with a high rate of NOM failure in both pediatric and adults.
