      • 열화학 사이클 H₂ 제조를 위한 NiFe₂O₄의 열적 거동

        고상법에 의해 제조된 NiFe₂O₄의 열적거동은 열화학 사이클에 의해 H₂제조를 위해서 연구되었다. NiFe₂O₄의 환원반응은 800℃부터 시작하였고 무게감소는 1000℃까지 0.2-0.3 wt% 감소하였다. 이 반응에서 NiFe₂O₄의 B위치의 Fe31 이온과 결합된 산소의 방출에 의해 NiFe₂O₄는 환원되어진다. 환원산화 반응을 위해 NiFe₂O₄의 구조는 스피넬 구조를 갖는다. 여기서 H₂O 분해반응은 환원된 NiFe₂O₄의 산화반응에 의해 H₂가 제조된다. 그러므로 NiFe₂O₄는 환원반응시 비교적 낮은 온도에서 산소를 방출하고, 환원산화 반응 중 결정구조의 변화 없이 매우 안정하게 H₂를 생산할 수 있기 때문에 열화학 사이클 반응에서 우수한 재료로 평가된다. The thermal behavior of NiFe₂O₄ prepared by a solid-state reaction was investigated for H₂ generation by the thermochemical cycle. The reduction of NiFe₂O₄ started from 800 ℃, and the weight loss was 0.2-0.3 wt% up to 1000 ℃. At this reaction, NiFe₂O₄ was reduced by release of oxygen bonded with the Fe3+ ion in the B site of NiFe₂O₄. In the H₂O decomposition reaction, H₂ was generated by oxidation of reduced NiFe₂O₄. The crystal structure of NiFe₂O₄ for redox reaction maintained spinel structure. Then, NiFe₂O₄ is excellent material in the thermochemical cyclic reaction due to release oxygen at low temperature for the reduction reaction and produce H₂maintaining crystal structure for redox reaction.

        Allelic variance among ABO blood group genotypes in a population from the western region of Saudi Arabia

        BackgroundCharacterization of the ABO blood group at the phenotype and genotype levels is clinically essential for transfusion, forensics, and population studies. This study elucidated ABO phenotypes and genotypes, and performed an evaluation of their distribution in in-dividuals from the western region of Saudi Arabia.MethodsOne-hundred and seven samples underwent standard serological techniques for ABO blood group phenotype analysis. ABO alleles and genotypes were identified using multi-plex polymerase chain reaction, and electrophoretic analysis was performed to evaluate the highly polymorphic ABO locus.ResultsA phenotype distribution of 37.4%, 30.8%, 24.3%, and 7.5% was found for blood groups O, A, B, and AB respectively in our study cohort. Genotype analysis identified 10 genotype combinations with the O01/O02 and A102/O02 genotypes being the most frequent with frequencies of 33.6% and 14.95%, respectively. Common genotypes such as A101/A101, A101/A102, A101/B101, B101/B101, and O01/O01 were not detected. Similarly, the rare genotypes, cis-AB01/O02, cis-AB01/O01, and cis-AB01/A102 were not found in our cohort. The most frequently observed allele was O02 (35.98%) followed by the A102 allele (17.76%). Furthermore, our findings are discussed in reference to ABO allele and geno-type frequencies found in other ethnic groups.ConclusionThe study has a significant implication on the management of blood bank and transfusion services in Saudi Arabian patients.

        Efficacy of combining ING4 and TRAIL genes in cancer-targeting gene virotherapy strategy: first evidence in preclinical hepatocellular carcinoma

        <P>Current treatments of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are ineffective and unsatisfactory in many aspects. Cancer-targeting gene virotherapy using oncolytic adenoviruses (OAds) armed with anticancer genes has shown efficacy and safety in clinical trials. Nowadays, both inhibitor of growth 4 (ING4), as a multimodal tumor suppressor gene, and tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), as a potent apoptosis-inducing gene, are experiencing a renaissance in cancer gene therapy. Herein we investigated the antitumor activity and safety of mono- and combined therapy with OAds armed with ING4 (Ad-ΔB/ING4) and TRAIL (Ad-ΔB/TRAIL) gene, respectively, on preclinical models of human HCC. OAd-mediated expression of ING4 or TRAIL transgene was confirmed. Ad-ΔB/TRAIL and/or Ad-ΔB/ING4 exhibited potent killing effect on human HCC cells (HuH7 and Hep3B) but not on normal liver cells. Most importantly, systemic therapy with Ad-ΔB/ING4 plus Ad-ΔB/TRAIL elicited more eradicative effect on an orthotopic mouse model of human HCC than their monotherapy, without causing obvious overlapping toxicity. Mechanistically, Ad-ΔB/ING4 and Ad-ΔB/TRAIL were remarkably cooperated to induce antitumor apoptosis and immune response, and to repress tumor angiogenesis. This is the first study showing that concomitant therapy with Ad-ΔB/ING4 and Ad-ΔB/TRAIL may provide a potential strategy for HCC therapy and merits further investigations to realize its possible clinical translation.</P>

        Biochemical and anti-inflammatory effect of Ocimum americanum Linn. extracts on gentamicin- and cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats

        Interest in medicinal plant research and usage has risen due to many reported side effects of synthetic drugs and their relatively higher cost. Ocimum americanum (family Lamiaceae) is a commonly used spice in Ghana with the aqueous extracts of leaves, flowers and stem been rich in saponins, alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins. The aim of the study was to evaluate the nephroprotective potential of the aqueous extracts of O. americanum parts on gentamicin- and cisplatin-induced toxicity in rats. In a ten-day experiment, nephrotoxicity was induced with gentamicin (GM; 100 mg/kg b.wt. for 8 days) and cisplatin (Cisp; 6 mg/kg b.wt. for 1 day) after pre-treatment with 250 mg/kg b.wt. of the leaves, stem, and flower extracts of O. americanum and standard drug, silymarin (100 mg/kg b.wt.) for 10 days. The nephroprotective activity was evaluated by assaying the activity of serum kidney function parameter, kidney oxidative stress parameters, kidney inflammatory cytokines (NF-κB and IL-1) and histopathology. The activities of kidney function parameters of animals were significantly increased following Cisp and GM treatment with resultant alteration is kidney microarchitecture, over-expressions of NF-κB and IL1 and kidney oxidative stress markers. Extract pre-treatment restored kidney function to near-normal, downregulating the expressions of IL-1 and NF-κB and improved levels of reduced GSH contents, GPx and SOD activities. However, leaves extract showed the best protection against GM while all extracts showed improved protection (> 50%) against Cisp. Extract of Ocimum americanum exhibit nephroprotective activity and could be developed as a potent kidney protector.

      • MgAl₂O₄ 스피넬 내화물의 합성과 응용

        MgO-Al₂O₃계에서 MgO첨가량에 따른 스피넬의 생성과 소결성을 조사하였다. 아울러 스피넬 내화물과 시멘트를 구성하는 주성분인 CaO의 반응성에 대하여 검토하였다. 가열된 시편의 상은 대부분의 스피넬, 페리클레이스 및 코런덤으로 동정되었고 과잉의 MgO를 함유한 시편의 경우 1750℃에서는 잔류 코런덤은 확인되지 않았다. MgO 함량이 감소함에 따라 스피넬내에 Al₂O₃의 고용에 기인된 스피넬의 생산량은 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다. 과잉의 MgO를 함유한 시편은 1600℃에서 치밀화가 촉진되어 1750℃, 5시간 유지한 시편의 경우 최종 소결밀도는 3.51g/㎤였다. 1750℃, 5시간 유지한 시편을 회전침식시험한 결과, 과잉의 MgO를 함유한 시편의 경우 침식깊이가 8.2mm, 침식면적이 225㎟로 다른 시편에 비교하여 가동면에서 CaO에 대한 침식저항성이 우수하였다. Effects of MgO content in spinel formation and sintering behavior of MgO-Al₂O₃ system were investigated. The reactivity of CaO in spinel refractories was also studied. From phase analyse, the refractories composed of mainaly two phase as like periclase and spinel, and residual corundom. However, the residual corundum was almost disappeared as it was fired at 1750℃ with excess of MgO. As the amount of MgO was reduced, the formation of spinel increased due to solid solubility of Al₂O₃ in spinel. The sample with excess of MgO markedly promoted the densification of spinel at 1600℃. The density of sample fired at 1750℃ for 5h was 3.51g/㎤. In rotary corrosion test, the sample with excess of MgO content, which had 8.2mm in the corrosion depth and 225㎟ in the corrosion area showed excellent corrosion resistance against the reactivity of CaO on the surface of spinel refractories.

        Inequalities for the angular derivatives of certain classes of holomorphic functions in the unit disc

        In this paper, a boundary version of the Schwarz lemma is investigated. We take into consideration a function $f(z)=z+c_{p+1}z^{p+1}+c_{p+2}z^{p+2}+\cdots$ holomorphic in the unit disc and $\left\vert \frac{f(z)}{\lambda f(z)+(1-\lambda )z}-\alpha \right\vert <\alpha $ for $\left\vert z\right\vert <1$, where $\frac{1}{2}<\alpha \leq \frac{1}{1+\lambda }$, $ 0\leq $ $\lambda <1$. If we know the second and the third coefficient in the expansion of the function $f(z)=z+c_{p+1}z^{p+1}+c_{p+2}z^{p+2}+\cdots$, then we can obtain more general results on the angular derivatives of certain holomorphic function on the unit disc at boundary by taking into account $ c_{p+1}$, $c_{p+2}$ and zeros of $f(z)-z$. We obtain a sharp lower bound of $ \left\vert f^{\prime }(b)\right\vert $ at the point $b$, where $\left\vert b\right\vert =1$.

      • Cloning and functional characterization of the p65 subunit of NF-κB from olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus)

        NF-κB is a master transcription factor found in almost all cell types that responds to diverse cellular stimuli by activating the expression of stress response genes, including immune-related genes. cDNA encoding the p65 subunit of olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) NF-κB (Po-p65) was isolated through an EST analysis of an olive flounder cDNA library, a screen of BAC library, and rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). The cDNA for Po-p65 encodes a polypeptide 626 amino acids in length containing a well-conserved Rel-homology domain (RHD). The primary sequence of Po-p65 showed strong homology with p65 from perch and zebrafish (82.7 and 64.4%, respectively), and shared 43.4-42.1% homology with p65 from other species, including mammals, while the N-terminal RHD of Po-p65 showed strong identity (95.6-67.8%) with that of other species. Po-p65 mRNA expression was detected in all flounder tissues examined. The over-expression of full-length Po-p65 (Po-p65f), but not of a Po-p65 C-terminus deletion mutant (Po-p65ΔC), stimulated κB element-driven reporter (κB-luc) activity in a dose-dependent manner and regulated the expression of p65 target genes, including TNF-α and IκB-α, in HINAE olive flounder cells. Po-p65f translocated to the nucleus following stimulation with poly I:C in HINAE cells. Together, these results suggest that Po-p65 is evolutionarily and functionally conserved in flounder and mammals and may provide clues to the detailed molecular mechanism(s) underlying immune response regulation in flounder.
