Zinc Picolinate in the Prevention of Leiomyoma in Japanese Quail

        Nurhan Sahin,Mehmet Tuzcu,İbrahim Ozercan,Kazim Sahin,Ananda S. Prasad,Omer Kucuk 한국식품영양과학회 2009 Journal of medicinal food Vol.12 No.6

Epidemiologic studies suggest that zinc deficiency may be associated with increased risk of cancer. We investigated the effects of zinc picolinate supplementation on the development of leiomyomas, malondialdehyde (MDA), 8-isoprostane, 4-hydroxyalkenal (HAE), and 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) levels, and heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) expression in Japanese quails. One hundred fifty quails (6 months old) were assigned to three treatment groups consisting of 50 birds in each group. Birds were fed either a basal diet or the basal diet supplemented with 30mg or 60mg of zinc/kg of diet. The animals were sacrificed after 350 days, and the tumors were identified. Zinc picolinate supplementation did not affect the number of leiomyomas compared to control birds (P>.05). However, the tumors in zinc-fed birds were smaller than those found in control birds (P=.01) Serum MDA, 8-isoprostane, and HAE levels were lower in the treatment groups than in the control group: MDA, 1.95 versus 0.93μmol/L; 8-isoprostane, 108 versus 85pg/mL; HAE, 1.55 versus 0.96μmol/L (P=.01 for all three parameters). The concentrations of serum 8-OHdG, which is a marker of oxidative damage, in the groups were 28.5, 23.6, and 20.1ng/mL, respectively (P=.01). Hsp70 expression was significantly decreased in zinc-treated birds (P<.01). The results indicate that dietary zinc picolinate supplementation reduces the growth of spontaneously occurring leiomyomas of the oviduct in the Japanese quail. Clinical trials should be conducted to investigate the efficacy of zinc supplementation in the prevention and treatment of uterine leiomyoma in humans.

Dogan, Nurhan,Toprak, Dilek Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.18

The main objective of this study was to analyze the mortality trends of female breast cancer in Turkey between the years 1987-2008. The rates per 100,000 age-standardized to the European standard population were assessed and time trends presented using joinpoint regression analysis. Average annual percent change (AAPC), anual percent change (APC) and 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated. Nearly 23,000 breast cancer deaths occurred in Turkey during the period 1987-2008, with the average annual age-standardized mortality rate (ASR) being 11.9 per 100,000 women. In the last five years, significant increases were observed in all age groups, but there was no significant change over the age of 65. In this period, the biggest significant increase was in the 45-54 age group (AAPC=4.3, 95%CI=2.6 to 6.0).

      • Evaluation of Managerial Needs for Palliative Care Centers: Perspectives of Medical Directors

Kafadar, Didem,Ince, Nurhan,Akcakaya, Adem,Gumus, Mahmut Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.11

Background: Palliative therapies have an important role in increasing the quality of healthcare and in dealing with physical and psychosocial problems due to cancer. We here aimed to evaluate the managerial perspectives and opinions of the hospital managers and clinical directors about specialized palliative care centers. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in two large-scale hospitals in which oncology care is given with medical directors (n:70). A questionnaire developed by the researchers asking about demographic characteristics and professional experience, opinions and suggestions of medical directors about providing and integrating palliative care into healthcare was used and responses were analyzed. Results: Potential barriers in providing palliative care (PC) and integrating PC into health systems were perceived as institutional by most of the doctors (97%) and nurses (96%). Social barriers were reported by 54% of doctors and 82% of nurses. Barriers due to interest and knowledge of health professionals about PC were reported by 76% of doctors and 75% of nurses. Among encouragement ideas to provide PC were dealing with staff educational needs (72%), improved working conditions (77%) and establishing a special PC unit (49)%. An independent PC unit was suggested by 27.7% of participants and there was no difference between the hospitals. To overcome the barriers for integration of PC into health systems, providing education for health professionals and patient relatives, raising awareness in society, financial arrangements and providing infrastructure were suggested. The necessity for planning and programming were emphasized. Conclusions: In our study, the opinions and perspectives of hospital managers and clinical directors were similar to current approaches. Managerial needs for treating cancer in efficient cancer centers, increasing the capacity of health professionals to provide care in every stage of cancer, effective education planning and patient care management were emphasized.

The Evaluation of Contact Sensitivity with Standard and Cosmetic Patch Test Series in Rosacea Patients

( Hilal Kaya Erdogan ),( Isil Bulur ),( Zeynep Nurhan Saracoglu ),( Muzaffer Bilgin ) 대한피부과학회 2018 Annals of Dermatology Vol.30 No.3

Background: Rosacea is a common dermatosis characterized by erythema, telangiectasia, papules and pustules. Objective: We aimed to evaluate contact sensitivity in the rosacea patients. Methods: We included 65 rosacea patients and 60 healthy volunteers in the study. The patient and control groups were patch tested with European baseline series and cosmetic series. Results: A positive reaction to at least 1 allergen in the European standard series was found in 32.3% of rosacea patients and 20.0% of subjects in the control group while the relevant numbers were 30.8% of rosacea patients and 10% of controls with the cosmetic series (p=0.08). In total, we found a positive reaction to at least 1 allergen in 38.5% of patients and 25.0% of controls (p=0.15). We did not find a statistically significant relationship between a positive reaction to 1 allergen in total and the gender, skin type, rosacea type, ocular involvement, age and disease duration. There were more symptoms in patients with a positive reaction to allergens (p<0.001). Conclusion: Contact sensitivity was detected more common in rosacea patients. Patch testing may be useful in the treatment and follow up of rosacea patients especially if symptoms such as itching, burning and stinging are present. (Ann Dermatol 30(3) 290∼295, 2018)

Biocides Effect on the Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion of Pure Copper by Desulfovibrio sp.

Onan, Mert,Ilhan-Sungur, Esra,Gungor, Nihal Dogruoz,Cansever, Nurhan The Korean Electrochemical Society 2018 Journal of electrochemical science and technology Vol.9 No.1

The aims of this study were to determine the corrosion behavior of pure copper in the presence of Desulfovibrio sp. and also to investigate the effects of glutaraldehyde (GD) and isothiazolinone (ISO) on the corrosion behavior of pure copper in the presence of this sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) strain by using electrochemical techniques. Electrochemical measurements of pure copper were carried out at specified time intervals (0, 8, 24, 48, and 96 hr) over a period of exposure. Corrosion rates of pure copper from anodic and cathodic Tafel slopes and corrosion potential ($E_{corr}$) were determined. Biofilm and corrosion products on the copper surfaces were observed by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectrometry (EDS) analyses. The effects of solution types (PC (Postgate's C medium) and SRB (Desulfovibrio sp.)) and exposure times of copper and biocides (ISO or GD) on the corrosion rates of pure copper were evaluated by statistical analyses. As a result of the FESEM analysis, biofilm formation was observed on the surfaces of pure copper exposed to the Desulfovibrio sp. cultures both with and without the biocides. The results show that the pure copper was corroded by Desulfovibrio sp. However, the addition of GD or ISO to the Desulfovibrio sp. culture resulted in a decrease in the corrosion rate of the pure copper. It was also observed that both of the biocides showed a similar effect on pure copper's corrosion rate caused by Desulfovibrio sp.

The effects of coenzyme Q10 on oxidative stress and heat shock proteins in rats subjected to acute and chronic exercise

( Ragip Pala ),( Fahrettin Beyaz ),( Mehmet Tuzcu ),( Besir Er ),( Nurhan Sahin ),( Vedat Cinar ),( Kazim Sahin ) 한국운동영양학회 2018 Physical Activity and Nutrition (Phys Act Nutr) Vol.22 No.3

[Purpose] The aim of the study was to determine the effects of dietary CoQ10 on serum biochemical parameters, lipid peroxidation, and HSP expression in the liver and slow-twitch muscles (soleus and gastronemius deep portion) of exercise-trained rats. [Methods] A total of 42 Wistar albino rats were divided into six groups: 1) Control, 2) Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), 3) Chronic Exercise (CE), 4) CE + CoQ10, 5) Acute Exercise (AE), and 6) AE + CoQ10. The rats were subjected to the running test 5 days a week for 6 weeks after which CoQ10 was administered via the diet. AE (running on the treadmill until the rats were exhausted) was done on the last day. [Results] The results showed no significant difference in serum glucose and liver functions in any of the groups. However, CoQ10 and exercise treatment were found to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Serum and muscle malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were found to be lower in the CE and CE + CoQ10 groups compared to the control group. The highest levels of HSP60, HSP70, and HSP90 in liver and muscle were found in the AE group, and the lowest levels were found in CE + CoQ10 group. CoQ10 supplementation reduced HSP expression in both CE- and AE-trained rats (P < 0.05). [Conclusion] The results showed that CoQ10 supplementation could reduce MDA levels, protect against oxidative damage, and regulate HSP expression in CE- and AE-trained rats. CE and CoQ10 were shown to reduce oxidative stress synergistically.

        Turkeli, Mehmet,Aldemir, Mehmet Naci,Cayir, Kerim,Simsek, Melih,Bilici, Mehmet,Tekin, Salim Basol,Yildirim, Nilgun,Bilen, Nurhan,Makas, Ibrahim Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.3

Background: Docetaxel, cisplatin, 5-fluorouracil (DCF) given every three weeks is an effective, but palliative regimen and significantly toxic especially in patients who have a low performance score. Here, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of a weekly formulation of DCF in locally advanced and metastatic gastric cancer patients. Materials and Methods: 64 gastric cancer patients (13 locally advanced and 51 metastatic) whose ECOG (Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group) performance status (PS) was 1-2 and who were treated with at least two cycles of weekly DCF protocol as first-line treatment were included retrospectively. The weekly DCF protocol included $25mg/m^2$ docetaxel, $25mg/m^2$ cisplatin, and 24 hours infusion of $750mg/m^2$ 5-fluorouracil, repeated every week. Disease and patient characteristics, prognostic factors, treatment response, grade 3-4 toxicity related to treatment, progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were evaluated. Results: Of the patients, 41 were male and 23 were female; the median age was 63 (29-82) years. Forty-one patients were ECOG-1 and 23 were ECOG-2. Of the total, 81.2% received at least three cycles of chemotherapy. Partial response was observed in 28.1% and stabilization in 29.7%. Overall, the disease was controlled in 57.8% whereas progression was noted in 42.2%. The median time to progression was 4 months (95%CI, 2.8-5.2 months) and median overall survival was 12 months (95%CI, 9.2-14.8 months). The evaluation of patients for grade 3-4 toxicity revealed that 10.9% had anemia, 7.8% had thrombocytopenia and 10.9% had neutropenia. Non-hematologic toxicity included renal toxicity (7.8%) and thrombosis (1.6%). Conclusions: In patients with locally advanced or metastatic gastric cancer who were not candidates for DCF administered every-3-weeks, a weekly formulation of DCF demonstrated modest activity with minimal hematologic toxicity, suggesting that weekly DCF is a reasonable treatment option for such patients.

Lycopene Protects Against Spontaneous Ovarian Cancer Formation in Laying Hens

        Kazim Sahin,Engin Yenice,Mehmet Tuzcu,Cemal Orhan,Cengizhan Mizrak,Ibrahim H. Ozercan,Nurhan Sahin,Bahiddin Yilmaz,Birdal Bilir,Bulent Ozpolat,Omer Kucuk 대한암예방학회 2018 Journal of cancer prevention Vol.23 No.1

Background: Dietary intake of lycopene has been associated with a reduced risk of ovarian cancer, suggesting its chemopreventive potential against ovarian carcinogenesis. Lycopene’s molecular mechanisms of action in ovarian cancer have not been fully understood. Therefore, in the present study, we investigated the effects of lycopene on the ovarian cancer formation using the laying hen model, a biologically relevant animal model of spontaneous ovarian carcinogenesis due to high incidence rates similar to humans. Methods: In this study, a total of 150 laying hens at age of 102 weeks were randomized into groups of 50: a control group (0 mg of lycopene per kg of diet) and two treatment groups (200 mg or 400 mg of lycopene per kg of diet, or ~26 and 52 mg/d/hen, respectively). At the end of 12 months, blood, ovarian tissues and tumors were collected. Results: We observed that lycopene supplementation significantly reduced the overall ovarian tumor incidence (P < 0.01) as well as the number and the size of the tumors (P < 0.004 and P < 0.005, respectively). Lycopene also significantly decreased the rate of adenocarcinoma, including serous and mucinous subtypes (P < 0.006). Moreover, we also found that the serum level of oxidative stress marker malondialdehyde was significantly lower in lycopene-fed hens compared to control birds (P < 0.001). Molecular analysis of the ovarian tumors revealed that lycopene reduced the expression of NF-B while increasing the expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2 and its major target protein, heme oxygenase 1. In addition, lycopene supplementation decreased the expression of STAT3 by inducing the protein inhibitor of activated STAT3 expression in the ovarian tissues. Conclusions: Taken together, our findings strongly support the potential of lycopene in the chemoprevention of ovarian cancer through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms. Anxiety Sensitivity and Quality of Life in Patients with Acne

( Ersoy Acer ),( Ali Ercan Altınoz ),( Hilal Kaya Erdogan ),( Esra Agaoglu ),( Nihan Yuksel Canakcı ),( Zeynep Nurhan Saracoglu ) 대한피부과학회 2019 Annals of Dermatology Vol.31 No.4

Background: Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is a continuous fundamental fear and defined as extreme fear of anxiety sensations and symptoms. High AS can cause tendency to anxiety disorders. There are many studies evaluating the anxiety in patients with acne; however, AS has not been investigated. Objective: We aimed to investigate AS in patients with acne. Methods: Two hundred and fourteen acne patients and 117 healthy control subjects, aged older than 16 years were enrolled in the study. Severity of acne was evaluated by Global Acne Grading System. The acne patients and healthy controls were asked to complete the anxiety sensitivity index-3 (ASI-3), the Beck anxiety inventory (BAI) and the Turkish version of acne quality of life index. Results: Anxiety and AS levels in acne patients were significantly higher than healthy controls (p<0.001). Quality of life was impaired in acne patients. Quality of life was negatively correlated with anxiety and AS levels in acne patients (p=0.014, p=0.019, respectively). There was no correlation between quality of life and disease severity (p=0.556) and also there was no correlation between psychiatric scale scores (ASI-3, BAI) and disease severity (p=0.147, p=0.871, respectively). Conclusion: To our knowledge, our study is the first to report that AS is high in acne patients. Clinically, our results suggest that there might be a relationship between AS and acne. We conclude that further studies are needed in order to clarify the relationship between acne and AS and to investigate the efficacy of cognitive behavioral treatments in acne patients. Marine phytoplankton improves recovery and sustains immune function in humans and lowers proinflammatory immunoregulatory cytokines in a rat model

( Matthew Sharp ),( Jacob Wilson ),( Matthew Stefan ),( Raad Gheith ),( Ryan Lowery ),( Charlie Ottinger ),( Dallen Reber ),( Cemal Orhan ),( Nurhan Sahin ),( Mehmet Tuzcu ),( Shane Durkee ),( Zainula 한국운동영양학회 2021 Physical Activity and Nutrition (Phys Act Nutr) Vol.25 No.1

[Purpose] This study investigated the effects of marine phytoplankton supplementation (Oceanix®, Tetraselmis chuii ) on 1) maximal isometric strength and immune function in healthy humans following a one-week high-intensity resistance-training program and 2) the proinflammatory cytokine response to exercise in a rat model. [Methods] In the human trial, 22 healthy male and female participants were randomly divided into marine phytoplankton and placebo groups. Following baseline testing, participants underwent a 14-day supplement loading phase before completing five consecutive days of intense resistance training. In the rat model, rats were randomly divided into four groups (n=7 per condition): (i) control, (ii) exercise, (iii) exercise + marine phytoplankton (2.55 mg/kg/day), or (iv) exercise + marine phytoplankton (5.1 mg/kg/day). Rats in the exercising groups performed treadmill exercise 5 days per week for 6 weeks. [Results] In the human model, marine phytoplankton prevented significant declines in the isometric peak rate of force development compared to placebo. Additionally, salivary immunoglobulin A concentration was significantly lower following the resistance training protocol in the placebo group but not in the marine phytoplankton group. Marine phytoplankton in exercising rats decreased intramuscular levels and serum concentrations of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and intramuscular concentrations of malondialdehyde. [Conclusion] Marine phytoplankton prevented decrements in indices of functional exercise recovery and immune function. Mechanistically, these outcomes could be prompted by modulating the oxidative stress and proinflammatory cytokine response to exercise.
