Nurgül Kendirlioğlu Günhan(Nurgül Kendirlioğlu Günhan ) Asian Qualitative Inquiry Association 2023 아시아질적탐구 Vol.2 No.1

East Asia has contributed greatly to the field of shadow education through various studies. In this study, “Theorizing Shadow Education and Academic Success in East Asia: Understanding the Meaning, Value, and Use of Shadow Education by East Asian Students” edited by Young Chun Kim and Jung-Hoon Jung and published by Routledge is examined. The book stands out as an original work in the context of the historical, cultural, and sociological examination of shadow education among East Asian countries. Considering that the field of shadow education is still in its developmental stage worldwide, this book will be an important reference source as it includes literature and research on the subject. The book appeals to a wide audience, including experts in the field of shadow education, educators, and those interested in education policies.

Nutritional Status and Risk of Sarcopenia among Hospitalized Older Adults Residing in a Rural Region in Turkey

Hacer Alatas,Yeliz Serin,Nurgül Arslan 대한노인병학회 2023 Annals of geriatric medicine and research Vol.27 No.4

Background: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of sarcopenia and its associated factors in community-dwelling older adults at risk of malnutrition based on the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI), and Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI). Methods: The study participants were 345 adults aged >65 years who visited Geriatric Internal Medicine outpatient clinics. The study included people without acute illness for whom the risk of malnutrition could be assessed and appropriate measurements taken. At the baseline visit, participants’ data and measurements were gathered. The primary data included sociodemographic details, anthropometric measurements, malnutrition screening tests, and functional assessments. Results: The participants’ mean age was 76.21±5.59 years, and 57.1% were men (n=97). The prevalence rate of sarcopenia was 45.5%. Compared to individuals without sarcopenia, those with it were older; had lower MNA, PNI, and GNRI scores; and had lower muscle mass, muscle strength, and lower leg circumferences (p<0.001). After adjusting for potential confounding factors, we found that sarcopenia, advanced age, male sex, high risk of malnutrition, calf circumference, and a low PNI score were all significantly associated with a low GNRI score (p<0.001). Conclusion: Sarcopenia was significantly associated with advanced age, male sex, and high risk of malnutrition. Patients’ nutritional and functional status should always be assessed for therapeutic interventions and lifestyle changes.

Comparision of Nd: YAG Capsulotomy Rate with Viscoimplantation and Hydroimplantation Intraocular Lens Techniqu

        tevfik oğurel,Reyhan Oğurel,Nesrin Büyüktortop Gök,Zafer Onaran,Nurgül Örnek,Kemal Örnek 대한안과학회 2019 Korean Journal of Ophthalmology Vol.33 No.3

Purpose: To investigate the rate of neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy inthe hydroimplantation intraocular lens (IOL) technique. Methods: This retrospective study was comprised of 6,192 eyes in 3,790 patients who underwent surgery fromJanuary 2013 to September 2017 and then were followed up for at least 1 year. The eyes of these patientswere divided into two groups: either viscoimplantation or hydroimplantation. The follow-up examinations werecarried out on the 1st day, 4th day, 1st month, and 3 months to 1 year postoperatively. The Nd:YAG capsulotomyrates were evaluated by the different IOL implantation techniques and IOL materials. Results: The mean follow-up duration of the patients was in the viscoimplantation group 14.85 ± 2.43 and 15.05± 1.93 months in the hydroimplantation group. The Nd:YAG capsulotomy rate was significantly lower in thehydroimplantation group compared with the viscoimplantation group for the entire hydrophilic IOL model (p <0.001). In addition, the Nd:YAG rate was lower in the hydroimplantation group that used a hydrophilic IOL thanit was in the viscoimplantation group, which used a hydrophobic IOL. Conclusions: The hydroimplantation technique reduced the Nd:YAG capsulotomy rate.

Chromosomal Variations in Patients with Bipolar Affective Disorder

        Osman Dermirhan,Deniz Ta?temir,Nurg?l ?zpoyraz 한국유전학회 2007 Genes & Genomics Vol.29 No.1

The study of cytogenetic abnormalities may lead to a more accurate localization of genes related to disease. Therefore, chromosome determination could be included among the routine investigations of patients with bipolar disorder. We have examined the chromosomes of 80 banding technique. Random numerical and structural variations were present in 26.3% of the patients and in 10% of the controls. Of these, 57.1% and 42.9% of abnormalities had structural and numerical aberrations, respectively. Structural aberations usually consisted of deletions, heterochromatic regions of chromosome 9, and partial trisomy of various chromosomes. Numerical chro-trisomy 21, monosomy X, 47,XY, marker, and acentric chromosomes. The frequency of sex chromosome changes in our populations (3.75%) was significantly increased compared to t h a t i n n e w b o r n s . T h e s e regions can be the most active hotspots in the genomes of bipolar patients. The identification of such chromosomal abnormalities asociated with bipolar disorder could provide important e(s) on the chromosome(s).
