Nurdan Sarac,Aysel Ugur 한국식품영양과학회 2009 Journal of medicinal food Vol.12 No.4

In this study, antimicrobial activities of the essential oils obtained by using the hydrodistillation method from some lamiaceous plants—Mentha longifolia (L.) Hudson ssp. longifolia, M. longifolia (L.) Hudson ssp. typhoides (Briq.) Harley var. typhoides, Mentha pulegium L., Salvia fruticosa Miller, Salvia tomentosa Miller, Calamintha nepeta (L.) Savi ssp. glandulosa (Req.) P.W. Ball, Nepeta cadmea Boiss., Lavandula stoechas L. ssp. stoechas, and Ziziphora tenuior L.—were determined by using the disc diffusion method. The plants used in this study were collected from different localities of Muğla Province, Turkey. All the essential oils isolated from the plants were very effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, which included multiple-antibiotic resistant strains, except Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 and Pseudomonas fluorescens MU 87. The essential oils of the plant species, except S. tomentosa and S. fruticosa, were very effective against Candida albicans. The antimicrobial activities varied depending on the species, subspecies, or variety. In fact, essential oils of some plants belonging to the same taxa but collected from different localities showed different levels of antimicrobial activities.

Bilateral Transverse (Bowdler) Fibular Spurs with Hypophosphatasia in an Adolescent Girl

        Ismail Uras,Nurdan Uras,Ahmet Karadag,Osman Yuksel Yavuz,Hakan Atalar 대한영상의학회 2005 Korean Journal of Radiology Vol.6 No.1

Hypophosphatasia is a clinically heterogeneous inheritable disorder characterized by defective bone mineralization and the deficiency of serum and tissue liver/bone/kidney alkaline phosphatase activities. Due to the mineralization defect of the bones, various skeletal findings can be radiologically observed in hypophosphatasia. Bowing and Bowdler spurs of long bones are the characteristic findings. The Bowdler spurs reported on in the previous pertinent literature were observed in the perinatal aged patients and these lesions have rarely involved adolescents. We herein report on a 14-year-old girl with fibular Bowdler spurs.

Multi-point earthquake response of the Bosphorus Bridge to site-specific ground motions

        Selcuk Bas,Nurdan Memisoglu Apaydin,Ebru Harmandar,Necati Catbas 국제구조공학회 2018 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.26 No.2

The study presents the earthquake performance of the Bosphorus Bridge under multi-point earthquake excitation considering the spatially varying site-specific earthquake motions. The elaborate FE model of the bridge is firstly established depending on the new considerations of the used FEM software specifications, such as cable-sag effect, rigid link and gap elements. The modal analysis showed that singular modes of the deck and the tower were relatively effective in the dynamic behavior of the bridge due to higher total mass participation mass ratio of 80%. The parameters and requirements to be considered in simulation process are determined to generate the spatially varying site-specific ground motions. Total number of twelve simulated ground motions are defined for the multi-support earthquake analysis (<i>Mp-sup</i>). In order to easily implement multi-point earthquake excitation to the bridge, the practice-o rientedprocedure is summarized. The results demonstrated that the <i>Mp-sup</i> led to high increase in sectional forces of the critical components of the bridge, especially tower base section and tensile force of the main and back stay cables. A close relationship between the dynamic response and the behavior of the bridge under the <i>Mp-sup</i> was also obtained. Consequently, the outcomes from this study underscored the importance of the utilization of the multi-point earthquake analysis and the necessity of considering specifically generated earthquake motions for suspension bridges. Evaluation of prolonged pain in preterm infants with pneumothorax using heart rate variability analysis and EDIN (Échelle Douleur Inconfort Nouveau-Né, neonatal pain and discomfort scale) scores

        Mehmet Buyuktiryaki,Nurdan Uras,Nilufer Okur,Mehmet Yekta Oncel,Gulsum Kadioglu Simsek,Sehribanu Ozluer Isik,Serife Suna Oguz 대한소아청소년과학회 2018 Clinical and Experimental Pediatrics (CEP) Vol.61 No.10

Purpose: The EDIN scale (Échelle Douleur Inconfort Nouveau-Né, neonatal pain and discomfort scale) and heart rate variability has been used for the evaluation of prolonged pain. The aim of our study was to assess the value of the newborn infant parasympathetic evaluation (NIPE) index and EDIN scale for the evaluation of prolonged pain in preterm infants with chest tube placement due to pneumothorax. Methods: This prospective observational study assessed prolonged pain in preterm infants with a gestational age between 33 and 35 weeks undergoing installation of chest tubes. Prolonged pain was assessed using the EDIN scale and NIPE index. Results: There was a significant correlation between the EDIN scale and NIPE index (r=-0.590, P= 0.003). Prolonged pain is significantly more severe in the first 6 hours following chest tube installation (NIPE index: 60 [50–86] vs. 68 [45–89], P<0.002; EDIN score: 8 [7–11] vs. 6 [4–8], P<0.001). Conclusion: Prolonged pain can be accurately assessed with the EDIN scale and NIPE index. However, evaluation with the EDIN scale is time-consuming. The NIPE index can provide instantaneous assessment of prolonged and continuous pain.

Effects of cord blood vitamin D levels on the risk of neonatal sepsis in premature infants

        Birgul Say,Nurdan Uras,Suzan Sahin,Halil Degirmencioglu,Serife Suna Oguz,Fuat Emre Canpolat 대한소아청소년과학회 2017 Clinical and Experimental Pediatrics (CEP) Vol.60 No.8

Purpose: Vitamin D plays a key role in immune function. Vitamin D deficiency may play a role in the pathogenesis of infections, and low levels of circulating vitamin D are strongly associated with infectious diseases. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of low vitamin D levels in cord blood on neonatal sepsis in preterm infants. Methods: One hundred seventeen premature infants with gestational age of <37 weeks were enrolled. In the present study, severe vitamin D deficiency (group 1) was defined as a 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentration <5 ng/mL; vitamin D insufficiency (group 2), 25(OH)D concentration ≥5 ng/mL and <15 ng/mL; and vitamin D sufficiency (group 3), 25(OH)D concentration ≥15 ng/mL. Results: Sixty-three percent of the infants had deficient levels of cord blood vitamin D (group 1), 24% had insufficient levels (group 2), and 13% were found to have sufficient levels (group 3). The rate of neonatal sepsis was higher in group 2 than in groups 1 and 3. Conclusion: There was no significant relationship between the cord blood vitamin D levels and the risk of neonatal sepsis in premature infants.

Chemical Composition of Endemic Scorzonera sandrasica and Studies on the Antimicrobial Activity Against Multiresistant Bacteria

        Aysel Ugur,Nurdan Sarac,Ozgur Ceylan,M. Emin Duru,Yavuz Beyatli 한국식품영양과학회 2010 Journal of medicinal food Vol.13 No.3

The present study describes the antimicrobial activity and chemical composition of Scorzonera sandrasica Hartvig et Strid (Family Asteraceae), endemic to Turkey. The antimicrobial activity of the hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and ethanol extracts of the aerial parts of S. sandrasica was evaluated against microorganisms, including multiresistant bacteria, using a paper disc diffusion method. The chemical composition of the chloroform extract of the plant was determined by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The major compounds of the chloroform extract of the plant were caryophyllene oxide (19.7%), manoyl oxide (16.5%), and manool (11.3%), respectively. The extracts had antibacterial activity; however, no antifungal activity was observed against the two fungi. In particular, the ethanol and chloroform extracts exhibited significant activity against multiresistant strains of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia.

Comparison of ultrasound-guided subacromial corticosteroid and ozone (O2-O3) injections in the treatment of chronic rotator cuff tendinopathy: a randomized clinical trial

        Merve Örücü Atar,Nurdan Korkmaz,Sefa Gümrük Aslan,Özge Tezen,Sinem Uyar Köylü,Yasin Demir,Serdar Kesikburun 대한통증학회 2023 The Korean Journal of Pain Vol.36 No.1

Background: The authors aimed to compare the effects of a one-time ultrasound (US)-guided subacromial corticosteroid injection and three-time ozone (O2-O3) injection in patients with chronic supraspinatus tendinopathy. Methods: Participants were randomly assigned to the corticosteroid group (n = 22) or ozone group (n = 22). Injections in both groups were administered into subacromial bursa with an US-guided in-plane posterolateral approach. Primary outcome measure was the change in the Western Ontario Rotator Cuff Index (WORC) score between baseline and 12-weeks post-injection. Secondary outcome measures included visual analog scale and Shoulder Pain and Disability Index scores. Assessments were recorded at baseline, and 4-weeks and 12-weeks post-injection. Results: Forty participants completed this study. Based on repeated measurement analysis of variance, a significant effect of time was found for all outcome measures in both groups. Both the groups showed clinically significant improvements in shoulder pain, quality of life, and function. Baseline, 4-week post-injection, and 12-week post-injection WORC scores (mean ± standard deviation) were 57.91 ± 18.97, 39.10 ± 20.50 and 37.22 ± 27.31 in the corticosteroid group, respectively and 69.03 ± 15.89, 39.11 ± 24.36, and 32.26 ± 24.58 in the ozone group, respectively. However, no significant group × time interaction was identified regarding all outcome measures. Conclusions: Three-time ozone injection was not superior to a one-time corticosteroid injection in patients with chronic supraspinatus tendinopathy. It might be as effective as corticosteroid injection at 4-weeks and 12-weeks post-injection in terms of relieving pain and improving quality of life and function.

Gene Profiles in a Smoke-Induced COPD Mouse Lung Model Following Treatment with Mesenchymal Stem Cells

        Kim, You-Sun,Kokturk, Nurdan,Kim, Ji-Young,Lee, Sei Won,Lim, Jaeyun,Choi, Soo Jin,Oh, Wonil,Oh, Yeon-Mok Korean Society for Molecular and Cellular Biology 2016 Molecules and cells Vol.39 No.10

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) effectively reduce airway inflammation and regenerate the alveolus in cigarette- and elastase-induced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) animal models. The effects of stem cells are thought to be paracrine and immune-modulatory because very few stem cells remain in the lung one day after their systemic injection, which has been demonstrated previously. In this report, we analyzed the gene expression profiles to compare mouse lungs with chronic exposure to cigarette smoke with non-exposed lungs. Gene expression profiling was also conducted in a mouse lung tissue with chronic exposure to cigarette smoke following the systemic injection of human cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hCB-MSCs). Globally, 834 genes were differentially expressed after systemic injection of hCB-MSCs. Seven and 21 genes, respectively, were up-and downregulated on days 1, 4, and 14 after HCB-MSC injection. The Hbb and Hba, genes with oxygen transport and antioxidant functions, were increased on days 1 and 14. A serine protease inhibitor was also increased at a similar time point after injection of hCB-MSCs. Gene Ontology analysis indicated that the levels of genes related to immune responses, metabolic processes, and blood vessel development were altered, indicating host responses after hCB-MSC injection. These gene expression changes suggest that MSCs induce a regeneration mechanism against COPD induced by cigarette smoke. These analyses provide basic data for understanding the regeneration mechanisms promoted by hCB-MSCs in cigarette smoke-induced COPD.
