      • Postcolonial Environments in Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s Works

Nupur Mittal 부산대학교 한국민족문화연구소 2014 Localities Vol.4 No.-

This paper explores how Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s fiction engages with and reflects on environmental degradation and the global climate crisis which has been a growing concern in the latter half of the twentieth century. The exploitation of the environment, particularly in erstwhile colonies, is attributed by the author to the transnational asymmetrical political and economic structures which were established during the colonial period and sustained through neocolonial assaults after decolonization. Further, it is suggested that exploitative approaches to the physical environment, in particular, and human/non?human others, in general, are generated by modern epistemic structures ? it is argued that modern discourse, practices and institutions have become dominant and normative and thus they bring about the constant reproduction of practices on/in the environment which lead to its destruction. People are unable to act on/in ? and, indeed, read ? the environment in ways that are not going to lead to its exploitation. By wielding a magic realist mode which frames, probes and subverts some of the assumptions which undergird the protorealist mode, Marquez denaturalizes the ‘rational’, ‘natural’ and ‘objective’ view of the environment ? he exposes the ethnocentric underpinning of the same ? thereby allowing people to admit the possibility of conceiving alternate ways of defining and being in the environment.

        ON REVERSIBLE Z2-DOUBLE CYCLIC CODES

        Nupur Patanker 대한수학회 2023 대한수학회보 Vol.60 No.2

A binary linear code is said to be a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-double cyclic code if its coordinates can be partitioned into two subsets such that any simultaneous cyclic shift of the coordinates of the subsets leaves the code invariant. These codes were introduced in \cite{double}. A $\mathbb{Z}_2$-double cyclic code is called reversible if reversing the order of the coordinates of the two subsets leaves the code invariant. In this note, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-double cyclic code to be reversible. We also give a relation between reversible $\mathbb{Z}_2$-double cyclic code and LCD $\mathbb{Z}_2$-double cyclic code for the separable case and we present a few examples to show that such a relation doesn't hold in the non-separable case. Furthermore, we list examples of reversible $\mathbb{Z}_2$-double cyclic codes of length $\leq 10$.

Cloning, Expression and Hormonal Regulation of Steroidogenic Acute Regulatory Protein Gene in Buffalo Ovary

Malhotra, Nupur,Singh, Dheer,Sharma, M.K. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2007 Animal Bioscience Vol.20 No.2

In mammalian ovary, steroidogenic acute regulatory (StAR) protein mediates the true rate-limiting step of transport of cholesterol from outer to inner mitochondrial membrane. Appropriate expression of StAR gene represents an indispensable component of steroidogenesis and its regulation has been found to be species specific. However, limited information is available regarding StAR gene expression during estrous cycle in buffalo ovary. In the present study, expression, localization and hormonal regulation of StAR mRNA were analyzed by semi-quantitative RT-PCR in buffalo ovary and partial cDNA was cloned. Total RNA was isolated from whole follicles of different sizes, granulosa cells from different size follicles and postovulatory structures like corpus luteum and Corpus albicans. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR analyses showed StAR mRNA expression in the postovulatory structure, corpus luteum. No StAR mRNA was detected in total RNA isolated from whole follicles of different size including the preovulatory follicle (>9 mm in diameter). However, granulosa cells isolated from preovulatory follicles showed the moderate expression of StAR mRNA. To assess the hormonal regulation of StAR mRNA, primary culture of buffalo granulosa cells were treated with FSH (100 ng/ml) alone or along with IGF-I (100 ng/ml) for 12 to 18 h. The abundance of StAR mRNA increased in cells treated with FSH alone or FSH with IGF-I. However, effect of FSH with IGF-I on mRNA expression was found highly significant (p<0.01). In conclusion, differential expression of StAR messages was observed during estrous cycle in buffalo ovary. Also, there was a synergistic action of IGF-I on FSH stimulation of StAR gene.

Evaluating diaphragmatic dysfunction and predicting non-invasive ventilation failure in acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in India

        Patel Nupur B,Jain Gaurav,Chauhan Udit,Bhadoria Ajeet Singh,Chandrakar Saurabh,Indulekha Haritha 대한중환자의학회 2023 Acute and Critical Care Vol.38 No.2

Background Baseline diaphragmatic dysfunction (DD) at the initiation of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) correlates positively with subsequent intubation. We investigated the utility of DD detected 2 hours after NIV initiation in estimating NIV failure in acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) patients. Methods In a prospective-cohort design, we enrolled 60 consecutive patients with AECOPD initiated on NIV at intensive care unit admission, and NIV failure events were noted. The DD was assessed at baseline (T1 timepoint) and 2 hours after initiating NIV (T2 timepoint). We defined DD as ultrasound-assessed change in diaphragmatic thickness (ΔTDI) <20% (predefined criteria [PC]) or its cut-off that predicts NIV failure (calculated criteria [CC]) at both timepoints. A predictive-regression analysis was reported. Results In total, 32 patients developed NIV failure, nine within 2 hours of NIV and remaining in the next 6 days. The ∆TDI cut-off that predicted NIV failure (DD-CC) at T1 was ≤19.04% (area under the curve [AUC], 0.73; sensitivity, 50%; specificity, 85.71%; accuracy; 66.67%), while that at T2 was ≤35.3% (AUC, 0.75; sensitivity, 95.65%; specificity, 57.14%; accuracy, 74.51%, hazard ratio, 19.55). The NIV failure rate was 35.1% in those with normal diaphragmatic function by PC (T2) versus 5.9% by CC (T2). The odds ratio for NIV failure with DD criteria ≤35.3 and <20 at T2 was 29.33 and 4.61, while that for ≤19.04 and <20 at T1 was 6, respectively. Conclusions The DD criterion of ≤35.3 (T2) had a better diagnostic profile compared to baseline and PC in prediction of NIV failure.

Root Development and Anti-Oxidative Response of Rice Genotypes under Polyethylene Glycol Induced Osmotic Stress

        Juthy Abedin Nupur,Afsana Hannan,Md. Abir Ul Islam,G H M Sagor,Arif Hasan Khan Robin 한국육종학회 2020 Plant Breeding and Biotechnology Vol.8 No.2

Osmotic stress is a kind of stress which is directly or indirectly related to all other abiotic stresses. Four rice varietiesnamely Binadhan-11 (with SUB1 gene), BRRI dhan52 (with SUB1 gene), Binadhan-7 and BRRI dhan71 were used to study thevariation in root development and anti-oxidative response under osmotic stress conditions. Osmotic stress was induced by applyingpolyethylene glycol (4% PEG) in hydroponic solution. Treatment was given at the panicle initiation stage and leaf samples werecollected at fourteen days after treatment to estimate antioxidant response in terms of ascorbate (APX) and peroxidase (POD) enzymaticactivity. Roots were destructively harvested at 16 days after the stress imposition. The tested varieties showed significant differences inantioxidant responses under the stress condition such as high APX and POD in Binadhan-11 and BRRI dhan52. Significant injury at the4thleaf position (the youngest leaf was the reference) was observed at 8 and 12 days after the treatment. Number of live leaves, shootdry weight, density of second order lateral roots, number of phytomer (Pr) and total roots, number of roots at Pr2, main axis diameterat Pr1, main axis length at Pr1 varied significantly among the varieties × treatment combinations. Binadhan-11 and BRRI dhan52showed comparatively higher osmotic stress tolerance compared to the other two varieties without SUB1 gene, viz., Binadhan-7 andBRRI dhan71. The varieties BRRI dhan52, and Binadhan-11 showed greater capacity to withstand osmotic stress can be further used todevelop stress tolerant variety.

Mitigation of Negative Impedance Instabilities in a DC/DC Buck–Boost Converter with Composite Load

        Suresh Singh,Nupur Rathore,Deepak Fulwani 전력전자학회 2016 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.16 No.3

A controller to mitigate the destabilizing effect of constant power load (CPL) is proposed for a DC/DC buck–boost converter. The load profile has been considered to be predominantly of CPL type. The negative incremental resistance of the CPL tends to destabilize the feeder system, which may be an input filter or another DC/DC converter. The proposed sliding mode controller aims to ensure system stability under the dominance of CPL. The effectiveness of the controller has been validated through real-time simulation studies and experiments under various operating conditions. The controller has been demonstrated to be robust with respect to variations in supply voltage and load and capable of mitigating instabilities induced by CPL. Furthermore, the controller has been validated using all possible load profiles, which may arise in modern-day DC-distributed power systems.
