Green upconversion luminescence and temperature sensitivity of LaOF:Yb,Ho phosphors

The aim of this study is to synthesize green upconversion phosphors by introducing Yb and Ho into LaOF. Furthermore, we aim to use the obtained LaOF:Yb,Ho devices as temperature sensors. The results of the X-ray diff raction measurements showed that Tetragonal LaOF and Hexagonal LaF 3 were detected in the samples that were sintered for 1 h. The photolumi- nescence characteristics were analyzed under excitation at a wavelength of 980 nm, and a strong emission was observed at a wavelength of 543 nm ( 5F 4, 5S 2 → 5I8). The temperature sensor was found to be stable. Furthermore, the sample showed a relative sensitivity of around 0.004 K −1 regardless of the temperature.
Abusive Head Trauma in Infants and Children in Japan

Subdural hematoma in infants can be caused by abuse, and is thought to be more likely if subdural hematoma is associated with retinal hemorrhage and cerebral edema. In Japan, few doctors disagree that cases of subdural hematoma with retinal hemorrhage and cerebral edema with multiple findings on the body are more likely to have been caused by abuse rather than by household accident. On the other hand, in cases where there are no other significant physical findings, only subdural hematoma and retinal hemorrhage, there is a difference of opinion as to whether the injury was caused by an accident or abuse. The reason for this is that neurosurgeons in Japan promoted the concept that infants can develop subdural hematomas and retinal hemorrages due to minor trauma at home before the concept of abusive head trauma became known. In addition, the age distribution of subdural hematomas in Japan differs from that in other countries, with peaks at around 8 months, and the reason for this remains unclear. Therefore, the etiology of infant subdural hematoma in Japan needs to be investigated in greater detail.

Background/Aims The aim of this study was to examine the convenience of the quality of life and utility evaluation survey technology (QUEST) questionnaire and the frequency scale for the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (FSSG) questionnaire as self-assessment diagnostic instrument. Methods This was a two-way crossover study conducted over 6 weeks from September 2010 to November 2010. The subjects were 60 consecutive patients admitted to the Hiratsuka city hospital with a gastrointestinal condition, regardless of the coexistence of heartburn. They were assigned to fill in both the QUEST and FSSG questionnaires in random order. We analyzed the time taken to complete the questionnaires, whether subjects asked any questions as they filled in the questionnaire, and the questionnaire scores. Results Comparison of the QUEST and the FSSG revealed significant differences in the completion time (196.5 vs. 97.5 seconds, respectively; P < 0.0001) and in whether subjects asked any questions (37 vs. 15 subjects, respectively; P < 0.0001). Completion time in QUEST scores of ≥ 4 was lower than < 4 (170.5 vs. 214.0 seconds, respectively; P = 0.022), and the QUEST score was significantly higher without questions than with question (3 vs. 1 points, respectively; P = 0.025). Conclusions This study revealed that the FSSG questionnaire may be easier for Japanese subjects to complete than the QUEST questionnaire. (J Neurogastroenterol Motil 2013; 19:54-60)

Simultaneous measuring system for permeability and resistivity of magnetic sheets is presented. In this system, the coil impedance is measured when a specimen is inserted between two coils. This system was applied to nickel sheets, iron-nickel alloys and a nickel thin film.
