Scaffolding strategies for young learners' EFL/ESL proficiency: focused on task-based activities
Lee, Chong-nim 대한영어영문학회 2006 영어영문학연구 Vol.32 No.1
Lee, Chong-nim. “Scaffolding Strategies for Young Learners’ EFL/ESL Proficiency: Focusd on Task-Based Activities.” Studies on English Language and Literature. 32.1(2006): 185-205. This study investigates the quality of three Korean children’s English development over the observation period and explores how efficiently their scaffolding and learning strategies affect their L2 improvement on the sociocultural perspectives, since the (co)relation to the strategies used by the children in the process of L2 learning/acquisition should presuppose improvement in their L2 use. It will suggest effective teaching and learning strategies, materials, and scaffolding strategies for parents or other family members as well as English teachers, by investigating the learning context and the children’s development of their English literacy and proficiency. The application of the teaching implication in an EFL classroom will be discussed. (University of Southampton, UK)

Intestinal ganglioneuromatosis is an extremely rare condition, particularly in pediatric patients, and the imaging features of the disease have been rarely reported before. Herein, we present a pediatric case of intestinal ganglioneuromatosis involving the transverse colon and splenic flexure with bowel perforation, which is a rare initial manifestation of the disease.

Purpose To assess the effect of deep learning image reconstruction (DLIR) for head CT in pediatric patients. Materials and Methods We collected 126 pediatric head CT images, which were reconstructed using filtered back projection, iterative reconstruction using adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction (ASiR)-V, and all three levels of DLIR (TrueFidelity; GE Healthcare). Each image set group was divided into four subgroups according to the patients’ ages. Clinical and dose-related data were reviewed. Quantitative parameters, including the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and qualitative parameters, including noise, gray matter-white matter (GM-WM) differentiation, sharpness, artifact, acceptability, and unfamiliar texture change were evaluated and compared. Results The SNR and CNR of each level in each age group increased among strength levels of DLIR. Highlevel DLIR showed a significantly improved SNR and CNR (p < 0.05). Sequential reduction of noise, improvement of GM-WM differentiation, and improvement of sharpness was noted among strength levels of DLIR. Those of high-level DLIR showed a similar value as that with ASiR-V. Artifact and acceptability did not show a significant difference among the adapted levels of DLIR. Conclusion Adaptation of high-level DLIR for the pediatric head CT can significantly reduce image noise. Modification is needed while processing artifacts.

Cancer cells undergo uncontrolled proliferation, and aberrantmitochondrial alterations. Tumor necrosis factor receptorassociatedprotein 1 (TRAP1) is a mitochondrial heat shockprotein. TRAP1 mRNA is highly expressed in some cancer celllines and tumor tissues. However, the effects of its overexpressionon mitochondria are unclear. In this study, we assessedmitochondrial changes accompanying TRAP1 overexpression,in a mouse cell line, NIH/3T3. We found that overexpressionof TRAP1 leads to a series of mitochondrial aberrations, including increase in basal ROS levels, and decrease inmitochondrial biogenesis, together with a decrease in peroxisomeproliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1α(PGC-1α) mRNA levels. We also observed increased extracellularsignal-regulated kinase (ERK) phosphorylation, andenhanced proliferation of TRAP1 overexpressing cells. Thisstudy suggests that overexpression of TRAP1 might be a criticallink between mitochondrial disturbances and carcinogenesis.[BMB Reports 2014; 47(5): 280-285]

Academic research on the contribution of the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) and other determinants on tax revenue recovery optimization has gained significance these days. This paper aims at investigating the contribution of the TIN towards tax revenue recovery optimization in Cameroon. The period under review ranges from January 2014 to December 2020. Questionnaires were distributed to tax experts from the Directorate General of Taxation, the African Tax Administration Forum, and the Exchange Forum of Tax Administration. This research uses AHP as a decision-making tool for ranking tax revenue optimization criteria and sub-criteria. The results show that TIN significantly contributes to tax revenue optimization, even more than the tax rate. The quality and quantity of expected tax revenue collected depends on numerous factors such as broadening of the taxable base, curbing tax leakage loopholes, adoption of efficient tax rates, improvement of the business climate and ICT capacity, a higher level of tax education, and digital inclusion, according to the tax experts. The tax administration should also streamline organizational capacity and improve on the institutional responsiveness gearing towards a gradual transition into a Fine Tech-Based Intelligent Taxation system.
