Climate-Related Migration: Formulating a Contemporary Framework

Nilü,fer Karacasulu,İ,rem Aş,kar Karakir 서울대학교 국제학연구소 2021 Journal of International and Area Studies Vol.28 No.1

This article elaborates on the theoretical foundations as well as the empirical outputs of climaterelated migration and formulates a contemporary framework in analyzing this subject. There has been a paradigm shift from securitizing climate-related migration towards an emphasis on adaptation, resilience and justice. While it is still possible to talk about security-oriented discourses based on the realist approach, climate change has increasingly been recognized as a ‘threat multiplier’ rather than a sole primary threat. In the meantime, the liberal approach has embraced adaptation, resilience and climate justice discourses about climate refugees. On the empirical front, climate-related migration is observed mainly in South Asia, the Pacific and Africa.

Osseous outgrowth on the buccal maxilla associated with piezosurgery-assisted en-masse retraction: A case series

        Nilüfer İrem Tunçer,Ayça Arman-Özçırpıcı,Bahar Füsun Oduncuoğlu,Alpdoğan Kantarcı 대한치과교정학회 2018 대한치과교정학회지 Vol.48 No.1

Piezoelectric surgery is a novel surgical approach used in orthodontic treatment for rapid tooth movement. This paper presents a case series wherein osseous outgrowths were observed in response to piezosurgery-assisted en-masse ret-raction. Sixteen patients requiring upper premolar extractions were treated with miniscrew-supported en-masse retraction and received minimally invasive decortication via piezosurgery. Computed tomography (CT) of the maxillary anterior region was performed to investigate the nature of the outgrowths. In 8 of the 16 patients, hemispheric or disc-shaped osseous outgrowths were observed on the sites where piezosurgery was performed during retraction. CT images revealed that these outgrowths were alveolar bone. This case series presents a previously unreported osseous response to piezosurgery-assisted tooth movement during orthodontic treatment. The response is mostly transient and is observed in 50% of the treated patients, suggesting a bone turnover that can be assessed clinically and radiographically.[Korean J Orthod 2018;48(1):57-62]

Antibacterial Activity and Thermophysiological Comfort Enhancement by Calcium Chloride Solutions of Highly Elastane Polyamide 66 Fabrics

Nilüfer Yıldız Varan,Pelin Altay 한국섬유공학회 2022 Fibers and polymers Vol.23 No.4

A novel method to enhance antibacterial activity, thermophysiological comfort properties of highly elastanepolyamide 66 fabrics by calcium chloride pad-dry-cure method was proposed. For this purpose, three different calciumchloride solutions were prepared and applied by pad-dry-cure method to the polyamide tricot (locknit) warp knitted fabrics. The effects of this method on polyamide fabrics were investigated by antibacterial activity, thermophysiological properties, physical performance tests and characterization analyses, namely, SEM, EDX and FTIR-ATR. Results indicate that calciumchloride agent procedure significantly affected antibacterial activity and thermal comfort properties. The calcium chlorideagent procedure was found to be favorable for polyamide/elastane fabrics since it provided antibacterial activity andthermophysiological effect under mild conditions with good stiffness, handle and whiteness properties by means of calciumchloride ionic bonds onto polyamide/elastane fabrics. Most notably, calcium chloride treated fabrics were evaluated as goodantibacterial, extremely breathable and comfortable at a higher level of activity.

One-step copper electroplating of carbon nanotube buckypaper using optimized electrolyte with additive chemicals

        Çakmakçı Nilüfer,Shin Myunggyu,Jung Huiyeon,Lee Jeongyun,Jeong Youngjin 한국탄소학회 2023 Carbon Letters Vol.33 No.4

Nowadays, variable materials have been investigated to find alternative lightweight conductors instead of copper because copper has a relatively high density. Carbon nanotube (CNT) is one of the most suitable materials as an alternative conductor to Cu, thanks to its high conductivity. In addition, CNT has many other great properties, such as low density, high strength, and high ampacity. However, individual CNT loses some of its performance after the assembly process. Therefore, CNT materials have been electroplated with copper to achieve lighter conductors. In this study, CNT buckypaper (CNTBP) is fabricated using a multi-walled carbon nanotube and copper electroplated using optimizing electrolyte with the help of additive chemicals such as accelerator and suppressor. Furthermore, the effect of hydrochloric acid in the electrolyte on the electroplating of CNTBP is observed. The results show that HCl in electrolyte enhances the effectiveness of additive chemicals and provide a well-plated CNTBP@Cu composite. The composite in this study is expected to be used in various areas.

A Flexible Supercapacitor Prepared with Surface Modified Carbon Nanotube Film Electrode and Hydrogel Electrolyte

        김혜주,송현준,Nilüfer Çakmakçı,강희수,박종현,신명규,정영진 한국섬유공학회 2021 Fibers and polymers Vol.22 No.10

As the demand for wearable devices increases, compatible energy storage systems have been explored. Energysystems integrated into wearable devices require mechanical robustness and stable electrochemical performance undermechanical deformations such as bending and folding. Herein, the flexible supercapacitor is fabricated with surface modifiedcarbon nanotube (CNT) film and a cross-linked acrylamide@N',N'-methylenebisacrylamide (AAM@MBA) hydrogel tomount on wearable devices. CNT film is a promising candidate for the electrode of flexible supercapacitors owing to its highelectrical conductivity, surface area, flexibility, and excellent mechanical properties. The high ionic conductivity, goodviscoelasticity, and shock absorption of hydrogel polymers make them suitable electrolyte materials for flexiblesupercapacitors. The heat treatment under air atmosphere is conducted on CNT film to enhance the interfacial adhesion withhydrogel electrolyte. The flexible supercapacitor delivers 8.15 F g-1 of specific capacitance and shows 93 % of goodcapacitance retention up to 400 cycles. Furthermore, it works normally when bending stress is applied. The flexiblesupercapacitor in this study is expected to be used in wearable devices, thanks to its good performance and high flexibility.

Turkish cultural heritage: a cup of coffee

        Birsen Yılmaz,Nilüfer Acar-Tek,Saniye Sozlü 한국식품연구원 2017 Journal of Ethnic Foods Vol.4 No.4

Setting out a fabulous journey from a tiny bean, coffee is the stimulant of the heart and mind and a mysterious plant that strengthens friendship and also takes your tiredness away during the day. Although information on how and where the coffee came from is not clear, Sheikh Şazeli is regarded as the “father” by coffee makers. The word coffee originates from “Kaffa”, a primary coffee production center in Abyssinia, Africa, which can be considered the homeland of coffee. According to this consideration, in Abyssinia, coffee was consumed with bread; it was then pulped and brought to Yemen, and Yemeni people started to cultivate coffee. The word “kahve” in Turkish does not mean the coffee plant like its synonym in Arabic but means the beverage made by boiling. Turkish coffee is a blend of high-quality Arabic-type coffee beans, originating from Brazil and Central America and moderately roasted and ground finely. The way it is prepared differentiates Turkish coffee from others. This coffee was called Turkish coffee because of a new method of preparation invented by Turkish people where it is boiled in copper coffee pots. Turkish coffee that has spread around the world with this name has been an indispensable part of the cultural and social history of Turks.

Investigation of Blood Betatrophin Levels in Obese Children with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

        Fatih Battal,Hakan Türkön,Nilüfer Aylanç,Hakan Aylanç,Şule Yıldırım,Nazan Kaymaz,Sema Uysal 대한소아소화기영양학회 2018 Pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology & nutrition Vol.21 No.2

Purpose: The prevalence of obesity has significantly increased among children and adolescents worldwide and is becoming an important health care problem in parallel with the increased prevalence of obesity pediatric non-alco-holic fatty liver disease. Betatrophin is a newly define hormone that is commonly secreted by liver and plays role in glucose tolerance. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum betatrophin levels and non-alco-holic fatty liver disease in obese children. Methods: The study included 40 obese children with a body mass index (BMI) above 95th centile, and 35 non-obese subjects with a BMI 3-85th centile, whose age and gender were similar to those of the patient group. For the evaluation of metabolic parameters fasting serum glucose, insulin, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, lipid profile and serum betatrophin levels were measured. Total cholesterol: high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol: high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratios were calculated as “atherogenicindices.”Results: Serum betatrophin levels of the obese subjects were similar to that of non-obese subjects (p=0.90). Betatrophin levels were not correlated with the metabolic parameters. Conclusion: In the present study, levels of betatrophin are not different between obese and insulin resistant children and non-obese subjects, and they are not correlated with atherogenic indices. To elucidate the exact role of beta-trophin in obesity, further studies are required to identify the betatrophin receptor and/or other possible cofactors.

Chronic ouabain treatment induces Rho kinase activation

        Aysun Ozdemir,Gürkan Şahan,Ayşegül Demirtas,Eda Aypar,Gürkan Gözübüyük,Nilüfer Nermin Turan,Mustafa Ark 대한약학회 2015 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.38 No.10

Ouabain is an endogenous Na?/K?-ATPaseinhibitor whose chronic administration induces hypertension. Endogenous ouabain levels increase in humanessential hypertension. On the other hand, Rho/Rho kinase(ROCK) pathway has been implicated in various animalmodels of hypertension. In the current work, we evaluatedthe possible involvement of Rho kinase in ouabain-inducedhypertension. Ouabain was administered daily (20 lg/kg,i.p.) to Wistar rats for 6 weeks. After the ouabain treatment,we evaluated the possible changes in vascular responsesto KCl and phenylephrine alone and in thepresence of Rho kinase inhibitor Y27632. We also determinedthe expressions of ROCKs, Rho A and phosphorylationof myosin binding subunit of myosin light chainphosphatase (pMYPT) and activation of Rho A. Agonistinducedcontractions in the presence of Y27632 are significantlydecreased and Y27632-induced relaxations inaortas precontracted with phenylephrine are significantlyenhanced with the chronic treatment of ouabain. Althoughthe expressions of ROCK I and ROCK II remained unchanged,pMYPT expression was significantly increased inouabain-treated group. Moreover, Rho A expression andactivation were decreased after treatment with ouabain. Although Rho kinase expression did not change in aortas, increased basal Rho kinase activation may contribute to thedevelopment of ouabain-induced hypertension. Our currentdata present the first evidence that Rho kinase is involvedin the development of ouabain-induced hypertension inrats.

High-impact chronic pain: evaluation of risk factors and predictors

        İlteriş Ahmet Şentürk,Erman Şentürk,Işıl Üstün,Akın Gökçedağ,Nilgün Pulur Yıldırım,Nilüfer Kale İçen 대한통증학회 2023 The Korean Journal of Pain Vol.36 No.1

Background: The concept of high-impact chronic pain (HICP) has been proposed for patients with chronic pain who have significant limitations in work, social life, and personal care. Recognition of HICP and being able to distinguish patients with HICP from other chronic pain patients who do not have life interference allows the necessary measures to be taken in order to restore the physical and emotional functioning of the affected persons. The aim was to reveal the risk factors and predictors associated with HICP. Methods: Patients with chronic pain without life interference (grade 1 and 2) and patients with HICP were compared. Significant data were evaluated with regression analysis to reveal the associated risk factors. Receiving operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to evaluate predictors and present cutoff scores. Results: One thousand and six patients completed the study. From pain related cognitive processes, fear of pain (odds ratio [OR], 0.92; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.87–0.98; P = 0.007) and helplessness (OR, 1.06; 95% CI, 1.01–1.12; P = 0.018) were found to be risk factors associated with HICP. Predictors of HICP were evaluated by ROC analysis. The highest discrimination value was found for pain intensity (cut-off score > 6.5; 83.8% sensitive; 68.7% specific; area under the curve = 0.823; P < 0.001). Conclusions: This is the first study in our geography to evaluate HICP with measurement tools that evaluate all dimensions of pain. Moreover, it is the first study in the literature to evaluate predictors and cut-off scores using ROC analysis for HICP.
