Three new chiral bisacylphosphine oxides, (-)-bis(menthylformyl)phenylphosphine oxide (1a), (+)-bis(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)menthylphosphine oxide (2a), and (-)-bis(menthylformyl)menthylphosphine oxide (3a),were synthesized using menthol as a chiral source. The synthesized new chiral bisacylphosphine oxides were used as photoinitiators for the polymerization of 1-phenyldibenzosuberyl methacrylate (PDBSMA). The polymerization initiated by chiral bisacylphosphine oxides under UV light irradiation is helix-sense-selective. Among the three prepared chiral bisacylphosphine oxides, the helix-sense-selectivity of bis(menthylformyl)menthylphosphine oxide is highest. The highest specific rotation of poly(1-phenyldibenzosuberyl methacrylate) at 365 nm is +416. The feed molar ratio of monomer to chiral bisacylphosphine oxide and the polymerization temperature have an influence on the helix-sense-selectivity. The lower the feed molar ratio of monomer to chiral bisacylphosphine oxide, the better the helix-sense-selectivity is. The increase of polymerization temperature is propitious to increase the helix-senseselectivity of the photopolymerization.

Six optically active oxide propane monomers (1m-6m) were synthesized in a very facile way. The monomers were polymerized using potassium hydroxide (KOH) as an initiator to afford the corresponding polyethers (1p-6p). The polyether (R)-1p (specific rotation, [α]=+331) exhibited optical rotation as large as fourfold that of the monomer (R)-1m ([α]=-10). The specific optical rotation, circular dichroism (CD) and ultraviolet (UV)-visible spectra data showed that the obtained polymers can keep a prevailing helicity of the backbone in solution.

Neospora caninum is the etiologic agent of bovine neosporosis, which affects the reproductive performance of cattle worldwide. The transmembrane protein, NcSRS2, and dense-granule protein, NcGRA7, were identified as protective antigens based on their ability to induce significant protective immune responses in murine neosporosis models. In the current study, NcSRS2 and NcGRA7 genes were spliced by overlap-extension PCR in a recombinant adenovirus termed Ad5-NcSRS2-NcGRA 7, expressing the NcSRS2-NcGRA7 gene, and the efficacy was evaluated in mice. The results showed that the titer of the recombinant adenovirus was 109TCID50/ml. Three weeks post-boost immunization (w.p.b.i.), the IgG antibody titer in sera was as high as 1:4,096. IFN-γ and IL-4 levels were significantly different from the control group (P<0.01). This research established a solid foundation for the development of a recombinant adenovirus vaccine against bovine N. caninum.
HIF-1α and GLUT1 Gene Expression is Associated with Chemoresistance of Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Aims: Much evidence suggests that increased glucose metabolism in tumor cells might contribute to the development of acquired chemoresistance. However, the molecular mechanisms are not fully clear. Therefore, we investigated a possible correlation of mRNA expression of HIF-$1{\alpha}$ and GLUT1 with chemoresistance in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Methods: Bone marrow samples were obtained from newly diagnosed and relapsed AML (M3 exclusion) cases. RNA interference with short hairpin RNA (shRNA) was used to stably silence GLUT1 or HIF-$1{\alpha}$ gene expression in an AML cell line and HIF-$1{\alpha}$ and GLUT1 mRNA expression was measured by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction assay (qPCR). Results: High levels of HIF-$1{\alpha}$ and GLUT1 were associated with poor responsiveness to chemotherapy in AML. Down-regulation of the expression of GLUT1 by RNA interference obviously sensitized drug-resistant HL-60/ADR cells to adriamycin (ADR) in vitro, comparable with RNA interference for the HIF-$1{\alpha}$ gene. Conclusions: Our data revealed that over-expression of HIF-$1{\alpha}$ and GLUT1 might play a role in the chemoresistance of AML. GLUT1 might be a potential target to reverse such drug resistance.
