Comparison of the Classical Method and SEE-FIM Protocol in Detecting Microscopic Lesions in Fallopian Tubes with Gynecological Lesions

Nermin Koc,Selçuk Ayas,Sevcan Arzu Arinkan 대한병리학회 2018 Journal of Pathology and Translational Medicine Vol.52 No.1

Background: The objective of this study was to compare the classical method and Sectioning and Extensively Examining the Fimbriated End Protocol (SEE-FIM) in detecting microscopic lesions in fallopian tubes with gynecological lesions. Methods: From a total of 1,118 cases, 582 with various parts of both fallopian tubes sampled in three-ring-shape sections and 536 sampled with the SEE-FIM protocol were included in this study. Pathological findings of cases with endometrial carcinoma, non-uterine pelvic malignant tumor, ovarian borderline tumors, premalignancy, and benign lesions were compared. Results: We detected two tubal infiltrative carcinomas among 40 uterine endometrioid adenocarcinomas, 15 serous tubal intraepithelial carcinomas in 39 non-uterine pelvic serous high-grade carcinoma cases, seven papillary tubal hyperplasias in 13 serous borderline tumor cases, and 11 endometriotic foci and four adenomatoid tumors among all cases sampled with the SEE-FIM protocol. Using the classical method, we detected only one serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma in 113 non-uterine pelvic serous high-grade carcinoma cases and two papillary tubal hyperplasia cases in 31 serous borderline tumors. We did not identify additional findings in 185 uterine endometrioid carcinoma cases, and neither endometriotic focus nor adenomatoid tumor was shown in other lesions by the classical method. Conclusions: Benign, premalignant, and malignant lesions can possibly be missed using the classical method. The SEE-FIM protocol should be considered especially in cases of endometrial carcinoma, nonuterine pelvic serous cancers, or serous borderline ovarian tumors. For other lesions, at least a detailed examination of the fimbrial end should be undertaken.

Design and Synthesis of Dual-Responsive Hydrogels Based on N,N-Dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate by Copolymerization with N-Isopropylacrylamide

Nermin Orakdogen 한국고분자학회 2014 Macromolecular Research Vol.22 No.1

Copolymeric hydrogels of N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and N-isopropylacrylamide(NIPA) of various monomer ratios were evaluated as thermo-responsive and pH-responsive systems for thedevelopment of controlled-release and targeted-delivery devices. The swelling properties were investigated with differenttemperature, pH, and monomer feed ratios. The results show that the temperature-dependent and pH-dependentphase transition of poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate-N-isopropylacrylamide) (P(DMAEMA-NIPA)) copolymerichydrogels can be controlled by changing the amount of NIPA units in the network chains. In experiments todetermine the temperature-dependent swelling of copolymeric hydrogels in water, it was found that the swellingratio rapidly decreases as the temperature increases between 35 and 70 ℃. To characterize the network structure ofthe copolymeric hydrogels corresponding to effective cross-linking density and average network chain length, uniaxial compressive mechanical testing was carried both after the preparation of hydrogels and after their equilibriumswelling in water. The data obtained demonstrates that the resulting copolymeric hydrogels are promising asmaterials with tunable hydrophilicity-hydrophobicity and swelling behavior responsive to temperature and pH.

Association Between Overactive Bladder and Polyneuropathy in Diabetic Patients

        Nermin Tanik,Serhat Tanik,Sebahattin Albayrak,Kürsat Zengin,Levent Ertugrul Inan,Emel Kiyak Caglayan,Asuman Celikbilek,Kadir Kirboga,Mesut Gurdal 대한배뇨장애요실금학회 2016 International Neurourology Journal Vol.20 No.3

Purpose: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder that often leads to complications. We aimed to correlate two complications of DM, polyneuropathy and hyperactive bladder syndrome, using noninvasive measures, such as screening tests. Methods: We included 80 female and 40 male type 2 diabetic patients in this prospective study. Diabetic polyneuropathy evaluations were conducted using the Douleur Neuropathique 4 Questions (DN4), and overactive bladder (OAB) evaluations were performed using the Overactive Bladder Questionnaire (OAB-V8). The patients were also evaluated for retinopathy and nephropathy. The diabetic male and female patients with or without OAB were chosen and compared for microvascular complications (polyneuropathy, retinopathy, and nephropathy). Results: There were no significant correlations between OAB and retinopathy as well as between OAB and nephropathy among diabetic patients (female patients, P>0.05; male patients, P>0.05 ). However, the patients with OAB were significantly more likely to develop polyneuropathy (female patients, P<0.05; male patients, P<0.05). Conclusions: In diabetic patients, OAB and diabetic peripheral neuropathy are significantly correlated. These correlations were demonstrated using short, understandable, valid, and reliable disease-specific tests without invasive measures. Using these screening tests, both neurologists and urologists can easily diagnose these complications.

ASSESSMENT OF AORTIC ELASTICITY PROPERTIES IN PATIENTS WITH CELIAC DISEASE

        Nermin Bayar,Ayhan Hilmi Çekin,Şakir Arslan,Göksel Çağırcı,Selçuk Küçükseymen,Serkan Çay,Ferda Akbay Harmandar,Bayram Yeşil 대한심장학회 2016 Korean Circulation Journal Vol.46 No.2

Background and Objectives Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic autoimmune disorder induced by dietary gluten intake by individuals who are genetically sensitive. Many studies report an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases in such patients. The aim of this study is to assess aortic elasticity properties in patients with CD that may be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Subjects and Methods Eighty-one patients diagnosed with CD by antibody test and biopsy and 63 healthy volunteers were included in this prospective study. Electrocardiographic and echocardiographic examinations were performed. Results The CD group did not have any differences in the conventional echocardiographic parameters compared to the healthy individuals. However, patients in the CD group had an increased aortic stiffness beta index (4.3±2.3 vs. 3.6±1.6, p=0.010), increased pressure strain elastic modulus (33.6±17.0 kPa vs. 28.5±16.7 kPa, p=0.037), decreased aortic distensibility (7.0±3.0×10-6 cm2/dyn vs. 8.2±3.6×10-6 cm2/dyn, p=0.037), and similar aortic strain (17.9±7.7 vs. 16.0±5.5, p=0.070) compared to the control group. Patients with CD were found to have an elevated neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio compared to the control group (2.54±0.63 vs. 2.24±0.63, p=0.012). However, gluten-free diet and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio were not found to be associated with aortic elasticity. Conclusion Patients with CD had increased aortic stiffness and decreased aortic distensibility. Gluten-free diet enabled the patients with CD to have a reduction in the inflammatory parameters whereas the absence of a significant difference in the elastic properties of the aorta may suggest that the risk of cardiovascular disease persists in this patient group despite a gluten-free diet.

Colloid Carcinoma of the Uterine Cervix and Its Immunohistochemical Analysis: A Case Report

Nermin Koc,Sevcan Arzu Arinkan,Nurver Ozel Ozbay,Selcuk Selcuk 대한병리학회 2018 Journal of Pathology and Translational Medicine Vol.52 No.1

Colloid carcinoma, which is a very rare tumor of the uterine cervix, is composed of an excessive amount of mucus and a relative paucity of tumoral glandular cells within them. Herein, we report a rare case of colloid carcinoma of the cervix with adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS), intestinal and usual types, and endocervical adenocarcinoma (usual type) components. We also discuss the morphological and immunohistochemical characteristics of this tumor. A 51-year-old woman was referred to our outpatient clinic with the symptom of genital bleeding lasting for 5 months. She had a cervix surrounded by an irregular tumor with a diameter of 5 cm. The colloid carcinoma cells were positive for MUC2, MUC5AC, and cytokeratin (CK) 7, focal positive for CDX2, and negative for MUC6 and CK20. Also, the intestinal type AIS showed a similar staining pattern. Colloid carcinoma cells producing mucin showed an intestinal phenotype and AIS. The intestinal type can be considered as a precursor lesion of colloid carcinoma.

The Relationship between Spontaneous Multi-Vessel Coronary Artery Dissection and Celiac Disease

        Nermin Bayar,Göksel Cagırcı,Cagın Mustafa Üreyen,Görkem Kus,Selcuk Kücükseymen,Sakir Arslan 대한심장학회 2015 Korean Circulation Journal Vol.45 No.3

Celiac disease (CD) is an immune-mediated enteropathy involving the small intestines. Genetic and environmental risk factors as well as autoimmunity have been linked to its etiology. Studies have shown that coronary artery disease, autoimmune myocarditis, arrhythmias and premature atherosclerosis are more prevalent in individuals with CD compared to individuals without the disease. In this case report a young male patient with CD presented with acute myocardial infarction with spontaneous coronary artery dissections of two vessels. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of spontaneous multi-vessel coronary artery dissection in a patient with CD.

The Reflex Effects on the Respiratory Regulation of the CO2 at the Different Flow Rate and Concentration

        Nermin Yelmen,Gulderen Sahin,Tulin Oruc,Ibrahim Guner 연세대학교의과대학 2007 Yonsei medical journal Vol.48 No.5

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the activation of the respiratory centers during insufflation of the larynx with CO2 at different flow rates and concentrations. Materials and Methods: The experiments were carried out in spontaneous air breathing rabbits, anesthetized with thiopental sodium (25mg kg-1i.v.). The larynx was separated from the oropharyngeal cavity and the trachea. The tidal volume (VT) and respiratory frequency (f min-1) were recorded from the lower tracheal cannula. The respiratory minute volume (VE) was calculated, the action potentials from the right phrenic nerve were recorded and the inspiratory (TI) and expiratory (TE) periods and the mean inspiratory flow rate (VT/TI) were calculated. The larynx was insufflated at flow rates of 500mL min-1 and 750mL min-1, with 7 and 12% CO2-Air by means of a respiratory pump. Results: Insufflation of the larynx, with both gas mixtures, decreased the f and VT significantly. The TI and TE were found to increase significantly due to the decreasing in f. There was a significant decrease in VT/TI ratio. Following bilateral midcervical vagotomy, on the passing of both gas mixtures, significant decreases were observed in the VT, and the responses of f, TI and TE were abolished. After cutting the superior laryngeal nerve, the responses of the VT to both gas mixtures were abolished. Conclusion: In conclusion, the results of this study purpose that the stimulation of the laryngeal mechanoreceptors by the effect of hyper-capnia decreases the activation of the respiratory center.

      • Interferon-γ and Interleukin-10 Gene Polymorphisms are not Predictors of Chronic Hepatitis C (Genotype-4) Disease Progression

Bahgat, Nermine Ahmed,Kamal, Manal Mohamed,Abdelaziz, Ashraf Omar,Mohye, Mohamed Ahmed,Shousha, Hend Ibrahim, ahmed, Mae Mohamed,Elbaz, Tamer Mahmoud,Nabil, Mohamed Mahmoud Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.12

Immunoregulatory cytokines have an influence on hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection outcome. This study aimed to determine whether single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in IFN- ${\gamma}$ and IL-10 genes are associated with susceptibility and/or are markers of prognosis regarding chronic hepatitis C outcomes. IFN ${\gamma}$ (+874T/A) and IL-10 (-1082G/A) genotypes were determined in 75 HCV genotype 4 patients with different disease severities (chronic hepatitis, n=25, liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) on top of liver cirrhosis, n=50) and 25 healthy participants using allele-specific polymerase chain reaction. No statistical differences in allele or genotype distributions of IFN ${\gamma}$ and IL-10 genes were detected between patients and controls or between patientgroups. No significant difference in the frequency of IL-10 SNP at position -1082 or IFN-${\gamma}$ at position +874T/A was found between chronic HCV genotype 4 and with progression of disease severity in liver cirrhosis or HCC. In conclusion; interferon-${\gamma}$ and interleukin-10 gene polymorphisms are not predictors of disease progression in patients with chronic hepatitis C (Genotype-4).

Is Obstructive Sleep Apnea a Risk Factor for Severe COVID-19?

Zerman Nermin,Aydin Cihan 대한수면학회 2023 sleep medicine research Vol.14 No.2

Background and Objective Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a breathing disorder during sleep with an obstruction of the upper airway. Previous studies showed OSA as a risk factor for severe COVID-19. It is crucial to determine the risk factors for the severity of COVID-19 infection. We aim to clarify the relationship between COVID-19 severity, and OSA and its degree. Methods Our case-control study included subjects diagnosed with OSA with polysomnography between January 2018 and November 2021, and a control group with a history of COVID-19 infection and without OSA diagnosis. The demographic data, comorbidities, apnea–hypopnea index, and oxygen desaturation index were recorded. Results A total of 217 patients were included in our study. The degree of OSA was a risk factor in the OSA group (p < 0.05); on the other hand, the diagnosis of OSA by itself was not a risk factor. The apnea–hypopnea index and oxygen desaturation index were not related to the severity of COVID-19 infection (p > 0.05). Diabetes mellitus was associated with increased hospitalization in inpatient clinics (p < 0.05) and intensive care unit (ICU) (p < 0.05). Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was a risk factor for admission to the ICU (p < 0.05).Conclusions Our results showed that moderate-to-severe OSA patients are a vulnerable population to severe COVID-19 infection, although diagnosis of OSA by itself was not a risk factor.

Comparison of Spectrophotometric, HPLC and Chemiluminescence Methods for 3-Nitrotyrosine and Peroxynitrite Interaction

Nilufer Nermin Turan,Mustafa Ark,Abdullah Tuncay Demiryurek 대한약학회 2005 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.28 No.3

We have studied the interaction of 3-nitrotyrosine with peroxynitrite using three different methods; chemiluminescence, spectrophotometry and HPLC. Peroxynitrite-induced luminol or lucigenin chemiluminescence were significantly decreased by 3-nitrotyrosine, in concentrationdependent manners. The intensity of the peroxynitrite spectrum was also markedly reduced in the presence of 3-nitrotyrosine in the spectrophometric assay. However, there was no attenuation of the 3-nitrotyrosine signal in the HPLC assay after mixing with peroxynitrite. The interaction of 3-nitrotyrosine and hypochlorous acid (HOCl) was also studied via the hemiluminescence assay, where the HOCl-induced responses were markedly inhibited by 3-nitrotyrosine. These results suggest that caution should be taken when studying the levels or interactions of 3-nitrotyrosine.
