Fostering Digital Health in Universities: An Experience of the First Junior Scientific Committee of the Brazilian Congress of Health Informatics

        Alexandre Negrao Pantaleao,Anna Luísa Mennitti,Felipe Baptista Brunheroto,Vitória Stavis,Laura Teresa Ricoboni,Victor Augusto Fonseca de Castro,Ollivia Frederigue Ferreira,Eura Martins Lage,Deborah Ri 대한의료정보학회 2024 Healthcare Informatics Research Vol.30 No.1

Objectives: Digital health (DH) is a revolution driven by digital technologies to improve health. Despite the importance ofDH, curricular updates in healthcare university programs are scarce, and DH remains undervalued. Therefore, this reportdescribes the first Junior Scientific Committee (JSC) focusing on DH at a nationwide congress, with the aim of affirming itsimportance for promoting DH in universities. Methods: The scientific committee of the Brazilian Congress of Health Informatics(CBIS) extended invitations to students engaged in health-related fields, who were tasked with organizing a warm-upevent and a 4-hour session at CBIS. Additionally, they were encouraged to take an active role in a workshop alongside distinguishedexperts to map out the current state of DH in Brazil. Results: The warm-up event focused on the topic “Artificialintelligence in healthcare: is a new concept of health about to arise?” and featured remote discussions by three professionalsfrom diverse disciplines. At CBIS, the JSC’s inaugural presentation concentrated on delineating the present state of DH educationin Brazil, while the second presentation offered strategies to advance DH, incorporating viewpoints from within andbeyond the academic sphere. During the workshop, participants deliberated on the most crucial competencies for future professionalsin the DH domain. Conclusions: Forming a JSC proved to be a valuable tool to foster DH, particularly due to thevaluable interactions it facilitated between esteemed professionals and students. It also supports the cultivation of leadershipskills in DH, a field that has not yet received the recognition it deserves.

Effects of spatial variability of earthquake ground motion in cable-stayed bridges

        Ferreira, Miguel P.,Negrao, Joao H. Techno-Press 2006 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.23 No.3

Most codes of practice state that for large in-plane structures it is necessary to account for the spatial variability of earthquake ground motion. There are essentially three effects that contribute for this variation: (i) wave passage effect, due to finite propagation velocity; (ii) incoherence effect, due to differences in superposition of waves; and (iii) the local site amplification due to spatial variation in geological conditions. This paper discusses the procedures to be undertaken in the time domain analysis of a cable-stayed bridge under spatial variability of earthquake ground motion. The artificial synthesis of correlated displacements series that simulate the earthquake load is discussed first. Next, it is described the 3D model of the International Guadiana Bridge used for running tests with seismic analysis. A comparison of the effects produced by seismic waves with different apparent propagation velocities and different geological conditions is undertaken. The results in this study show that the differences between the analysis with and without spatial variability of earthquake ground motion can be important for some displacements and internal forces, especially those influenced by symmetric modes.

Welfare traits of Bos indicus cattle castrated immunologically and fed beta-adrenergic agonists

Martello, Luciane Silva,Antonelo, Daniel Silva,Consolo, Nara Regina Brandao,Pacheco, Veronica Madeira,Negrao, Joao Alberto,Rosa, Alessandra Fernandes,Leme, Paulo Roberto,Sousa, Rafael Vieira,Silva, Sa Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2021 Animal Bioscience Vol.34 No.9

Objective: This work was carried out to evaluate the effects of zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH) and ractopamine hydrochloride (RH) combined with immunocastration on the welfare traits of feedlot Nellore cattle. Methods: Ninety-six Nellore males (average body weight [BW] = 409±50 kg; average 20 mo of age) were divided into two groups according to BW; half of the animals in each group received two doses of an immunocastration (ImC) vaccine in a 30 day interval, and the other half did not receive the vaccine (NoC). Afterward, the animals were housed and fed a common diet for 70 days. Then, they were split into three groups and fed one of the following diets for 30 additional days: control (CO) diet, with no β-AA; ZH diet, containing 80 mg/d ZH; and RH diet, containing 300 mg/d RH. Welfare traits were assessed by monitoring body surface temperature using infrared thermography (IRT) and plasma cortisol and temperament measurements. Results: There was no interaction between sexual condition and diet for any trait. The ImC and NoC groups did not differ in rectal and ocular temperatures. The ImC animals had higher flight speeds (p = 0.022) and tended to have higher cortisol levels (p = 0.059) than the NoC animals. Animals fed ZH and RH did not differ in cortisol levels, respiratory rate, rectal temperature, temperature measured by IRT, or temperament behaviour. Conclusion: The ImC animals showed a less stable temperament during handling practices than NoC, whereas ZH and RH supplementation had no adverse effects on animal welfare.
