Hallyu in Mexico and the Role of Korean Pop Idol’s Fan Clubs

Vol.- No.24

Being important for Korean society nowadays as never before, Hallyu is considered to be an interesting and unique movement which can be defined as a cultural phenomenon, because it has impacted on different societies all over the world. Being recognized as a Korean cultural phenomenon, Hallyu resulted in a surprising contemporary movement playing an important role as the face of Korea overseas. As a socio-cultural phenomenon Hallyu should be understood as having a hybrid nature. Therefore it helps to understand its success impacting on diverse societies. Besides this hybridity, containing non Korean elements, Hallyu still have local characteristics which allow it to appear as a unique Korean cultural movement. When analyzing closer the impact of Hallyu on overseas societies, it is evident that many factors have supported the success, diffusion and spread of this cultural phenomenon. The support of the Korean Government, the development of the Korean entertainment industry, cultural aspects, quality of the entertainments as well as the mass media and the internet are just some of them. In this paper I analyze the impact of Hallyu on Mexican society, specifically the impact of Hallyu on Mexico through the Korean pop idols’ fan clubs. The research is based on field work data and interviews obtained in Mexico City and data obtained through the main web pages of current fan clubs. The role of Mexican fan clubs has been the most important for the spread of Hallyu in Mexico, as these, have strengthened the existence of this phenomenon among Mexican society. It is a fact that Hallyu is having a big influence on Mexican popular tastes. Its existence shows that the Korean entertainment products are successful in Mexico in the present and that the main channels of diffusion are the cyberspaces and fan clubs activities. As a result the study reveals many interesting aspects which explain the reason why the fans are consuming Korean products, mainly entertainment ones. It also brings into light the main sources which not only spread but also diffuse these products into Mexican society in general.

Vol.0 No.64

2019 Journal of Korean Culture Vol.47 No.-

This study will reveal the perceptions of the members of the Korean community about several basic aspects at the time when Hallyu and the K-dramas started to gain popularity in Latin America and particularly in Mexico. This allows us to see if Koreans residing in Mexico perceived Korean cultural products as an element that correctly represents their society or their culture abroad, thus demonstrating the identity correspondence that was restructured and reinforced by the Korean government through cultural products of that period. Therefore, this work examines how the cultural policy initiated by the Korean government influenced the identity formation of the Koreans living in the Mexico-City. The study provides the basis for comparative studies to reflect on the perceptions of Korea by Korean citizens in Mexico.

Effects of Cacao By-Products and a Modest Weight Loss Intervention on the Concentration of Serum Triglycerides in Overweight Subjects: Proof of Concept

        Perla Leon-Flores,Nayelli Najera,Elizabeth Perez,Blanca Pardo,Fiacro Jimenez,Dylan Diaz-Chiguer,Francisco Villarreal,Isabel Hidalgo,Guillermo Ceballos,Eduardo Meaney 한국식품영양과학회 2020 Journal of medicinal food Vol.23 No.7

Therapeutic approaches to decrease serum triglyceride (TG) concentrations are not successful mainly due to poor adherence or adverse effects of therapies. In consequence, the search for new low-cost and safer therapeutic alternatives is mandatory. Dark chocolate and cacao have shown promising results improving lipid profiles. Recently, using cacao by-products to reduce elevated cardiometabolic risk markers in an animal model of obesity induced by a high-fat diet and fructose, we showed that TGs, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and the TG/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) ratio decreased, suggesting that cacao by-products improved the metabolic function of obese animals. Based on these results, as a proof of concept, a blinded placebo-controlled study was implemented to explore the effects of cacao by-products on anthropometric and biochemical variables in a group of overweight subjects participating in a program composed of reduced-calorie-diet counseling plus a simple aerobic exercise plan. The results showed that counseling induced weight and abdominal circumference reductions in both groups. TGs did not change in the control group; however, TG decreased significantly by 54.9 mg/dL (27.9%) in the experimental group. The TG/HDL cholesterol ratio changed markedly (1.5) in the experimental group. The results reported suggest the use of cacao by-products as an alternative for the treatment of hypertriglyceridemia.

        MINISO: The Miniso Experience

Valery Alexandra Delgado Velásquez,Angelly Nayelli Fernández Bellodas,José Carlos Feliciano Nishikawa Academy of Asian Business (AAB) 2021 Academy of Asian Business Review Vol.7 No.2

This MINISO was founded at the end of 2013 as a Japanese-inspired lifestyle products retailer offering high-quality household items, cosmetics, and food at affordable prices. In such a short time, MINISO became a famous global brand. However, the firm is now at a critical stage, where it still must face the challenges that lie ahead after the ravages caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This case study dives into the history of MINISO and attempts to explain why its business model has been successful. In addition to determining its competitive advantages, marketing strategies and other factors that have helped the company overcome several obstacles along its journey around the world. It will also help better understand differences between international markets and how the brand adapted to the public's requirements, especially to win the Latin American population's hearts, as evidenced by its rapid positioning in the region. For this purpose, this study can be divided into four parts. The first part explains what MINISO is and the business model that has allowed the company to expand globally. The second part analyzes the obstacles that the company has overcome to develop its strengths across its history. The third part will delve into success factors, the "heart of the brand”, allowing the company to connect with consumers worldwide. Finally, the last part describes the challenges that the firm must face to remain competitive in such an uncertain environment.

Beneficial Effects of Flavonoids on Skeletal Muscle Health: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

        Levy Munguı´a,Cristian Gonza´lez,Andre´s Portilla,Eduardo Meaney,Francisco Villarreal,Nayelli Na´jera,Guillermo Ceballos 2022 Journal of medicinal food Vol.25 No.5

Skeletal muscle (SkM) is a highly dynamic tissue that responds to physiological adaptations or pathological conditions, and SkM mitochondria play a major role in bioenergetics, regulation of intracellular calcium homeostasis, pro-oxidant/antioxidant balance, and apoptosis. Flavonoids are polyphenolic compounds with the ability to modulate molecular pathways implicated in the development of mitochondrial myopathy. Therefore, it is pertinent to explore its potential application in conditions such as aging, disuse, denervation, diabetes, obesity, and cancer. To evaluate preclinical and clinical effects of flavonoids on SkM structure and function. We performed a systematic review of published studies, with no date restrictions applied, using PubMed and Scopus. The following search terms were used: “flavonoids” OR “flavanols” OR “flavones” OR “anthocyanidins” OR “flavanones” OR “flavan-3-ols” OR “catechins” OR “epicatechin” OR “(−)-epicatechin” AND “skeletal muscle.” The studies included in this review were preclinical studies, clinical trials, controlled clinical trials, and randomized-controlled trials that investigated the influence of flavonoids on SkM health. Three authors, independently, assessed trials for the review. Any disagreement was resolved by consensus. The use of flavonoids could be a potential tool for the prevention of muscle loss. Their effects on metabolism and on mitochondria function suggest their use as muscle regulators.

Obesity and Cardiovascular Risk Improvement Using Cacao By-Products in a Diet-Induced Obesity Murine Model

        Isabel Hidalgo,Alicia Ortiz,Marı´a Sanchez-Pardo,Leticia Gardun˜o-Siciliano,Marcela Herna´ndez-Ortega,Francisco Villarreal,Eduardo Meaney,Nayelli Najera,Guillermo Manuel Ceballos 2019 Journal of medicinal food Vol.22 No.6

In the production of chocolate, only cocoa seeds are used, generating by-products that are generally discarded, increasing the risk of environmental contamination. Given fiber, carbohydrates, proteins, and flavonoid content the use of cacao pod husks can generate nutraceutical products for human consumption. In contrast, obesity represents a major public health problem worldwide. Cacao derivatives are able to modulate overweight and lipid disorders. The objective of present work was to prepare and characterize products using cacao by-products and analyze their effects on altered cardiometabolic risk markers in an obesity model induced by high fat diet and fructose ingestion in rats. The effects of a pellet and extracts made with outer pod husk and kernel husk for 5 weeks were analyzed in an obesity rat model. The treatments significantly decreased body weight by 39%, systolic blood pressure by 27%, triglycerides by 55%, total cholesterol by 24%, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol by 37%, and the triglycerides/high-density lipoprotein ratio by 54%. Cacao by-products improved the metabolic function of obese animals, without causing secondary effects
