Birth of a healthy infant after bone marrow-derived cell therapy

        Nayana H Patel,Yuvraj D Jadeja,Niket H Patel,Molina N Patel,Harsha K Bhadarka,Piyush N Chudasama,Harmi R Thakkar 대한생식의학회 2021 Clinical and Experimental Reproductive Medicine Vol.48 No.3

Bone marrow-derived cell (BMDC) therapy has numerous applications as potential biological cells for use in regenerative medicine. Here, we present an original case of endometrial atrophy associated with genital tuberculosis in a woman who achieved a live birth with BMDC. This 27-year-old woman came to our center with endometrial atrophy and primary infertility. She had a past history of genital tuberculosis and amenorrhea. Her husband’s semen quality was normal. The patient was counseled for hysteroscopy due to thin endometrium and advised in vitro fertilization (IVF) with donor eggs in lieu of poor ovarian reserve. Several attempts of IVF with hormone replacement therapy (HRT) were made, but the desired thickness of the endometrium was not achieved. Uterine artery injection of BMDC through interventional radiology was given, followed by HRT for three months, which resulted in improved endometrium. This was subsequently followed by IVF with donor egg. The treatment resulted in the conception and delivery of a 3.1-kg baby boy through lower segment caesarean section with no antenatal, intranatal or postnatal complications. Recently, there has been massive interest in stem cells as a novel treatment method for regenerative medicine, and more specifically for the regeneration of human endometrium disorders like Asherman syndrome and thin endometrium, which was the reason behind using this strategy for treatment.

Estimating the change in the rational runoff coefficient through history in Jefferson County, Texas

Nayana Muppavarapu,Liv Haselbach 대한공간정보학회 2023 Spatial Information Research Vol.31 No.6

Jefferson County in Texas has experienced devastating storms in recent years resulting in billions of dollars in damages. The county has gone through temporal milestones in terms of population growth and industrial development. Many studies have shown that urban development increases the risk of flooding by decreasing the soil infiltration capacity. The current study focuses on estimating the extent to which the urban development in the county has led to increased imperviousness using a combination of historical and current spatial data. Rational runoff coefficients of the County were estimated and compared at three different times over a span of 120 years. A land survey map for 1898, an aerial imagery map for 1966 and a land parcel map for 2019 were obtained from various sources. The three maps available, each in different format, were analyzed to determine the land use and land cover type for the respective years. The runoff coefficient increased by 21% from 1898 to 1966 and remained the same from 1966 till 2019. The estimates are in correlation with industrial and population growth patterns of the county. These preliminary spatial analyses are useful in estimating the contributions of recent major flooding from overall development, or if they may be more impacted from other factors such as changes in weather patterns.

      • Oyster mushroom extract protects antioxidant defence system in cisplatin induced nephrotoxicity in mice

Jose, Nayana,Ajith, T.A.,Janardhanan, K.K. Kyung Hee Oriental Medicine Research Center 2004 Oriental pharmacy and experimental medicine Vol.4 No.1

Cisplatin is a highly effective and extensively used anticancer drug. Higher doses of cisplatin manifest acute nephrotoxicity and this is one of the limiting factors of this drug in cancer chemotherapy. The effect of the oyster mushroom extract to ameliorate cisplatin ( cis platinum (II) diammine dichloride) induced nephrotoxicity and restoration of antioxidant defence system in mice was investigated. The investigations showed that prior administration of methanolic extract of Pleurotus florida at a dose of 500 and 1000mg/Kg body weight significantly reduced elevated serum creatinine and urea levels and increased superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities in the kidney, consequent to cisplatin treatment, in a dose dependent manner. The extract restored the decreased reduced glutathione (GSH) activity and increased malondialdehyde (MDA) level due to cisplatin administration. The results thus indicated that oyster mushroom extract rendered significant protection against cisplatin induced nephrotoxicity and depletion of antioxidant defence system in a dose dependent manner. Since oyster mushrooms are excellently edible and non-toxic, the finding reported here is of significant use in cancer chemotherapy.

Outcome of Arthroscopic Treatment of Mucoid Degeneration of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament

        Diego Ventura,Jorge H. Nuñez,Nayana Joshi-Jubert,Enric Castellet,Joan Minguell 대한정형외과학회 2018 Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery Vol.10 No.3

Background: Mucoid degeneration of the anterior cruciate ligament is a rare pathological entity. Several authors have identified this condition, described their experiences, and suggested their own guidelines for management. The aim of this study was to detail the clinical, radiological, arthroscopic, and pathological findings of mucoid degeneration of the anterior cruciate ligament and report the clinical outcomes following arthroscopic treatment. Methods: A historical cohort of patients who underwent arthroscopic total or partial excision of the anterior cruciate ligament due to mucoid degeneration between 2011 and 2014 were reviewed. The minimum follow-up was 3 years. Demographic, radiological, and histological findings, type of surgery, and clinical pre- and postoperative data were analyzed. The visual analogue scale score, the International Knee Documentation Committee score, and the Tegner Lysholm Knee Score were collected preoperatively, postoperatively, and during the follow-up period. Results: Seventeen females (67%) and eight males (33%) were included in the final analysis. The mean age at the time of surgery was 57 years (range, 31 to 78 years). Partial resection of the anterior cruciate ligament was done in seven cases and a complete resection in 18 cases. No reconstruction was performed at the same time. A positive Lachman test and a negative pivot shift were noted after surgery in all cases. Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction was required in only one young patient due to disabling instability. At last follow-up, the mean visual analogue scale score, International Knee Documentation Committee score, and Tegner Lysholm Knee score improved (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Our study provides further evidence that arthroscopic total or partial excision of anterior cruciate ligament is a safe and effective treatment for mucoid degeneration of the anterior cruciate ligament, improving patient satisfaction and function without causing clinical instability in daily activities. However, young patients should be forewarned about the risk of instability, and an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction could be necessary.

Use of Imaging and Biopsy in Prostate Cancer Diagnosis: A Survey From the Asian Prostate Imaging Working Group

        Wang Li-Jen,Jinzaki Masahiro,Tan Cher Heng,Oh Young Taik,Shinmoto Hiroshi,Lee Chau Hung,Patel Nayana U.,Chang Silvia D.,Westphalen Antonio C.,Kim Chan Kyo 대한영상의학회 2023 Korean Journal of Radiology Vol.24 No.11

Objective: To elucidate the use of radiological studies, including nuclear medicine, and biopsy for the diagnosis and staging of prostate cancer (PCA) in clinical practice and understand the current status of PCA in Asian countries via an international survey. Materials and Methods: The Asian Prostate Imaging Working Group designed a survey questionnaire with four domains focused on prostate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), other prostate imaging, prostate biopsy, and PCA backgrounds. The questionnaire was sent to 111 members of professional affiliations in Korea, Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan who were representatives of their working hospitals, and their responses were analyzed. Results: This survey had a response rate of 97.3% (108/111). The rates of using 3T scanners, antispasmodic agents, laxative drugs, and prostate imaging-reporting and data system reporting for prostate MRI were 21.6%−78.9%, 22.2%−84.2%, 2.3%−26.3%, and 59.5%−100%, respectively. Respondents reported using the highest b-values of 800−2000 sec/mm2 and fields of view of 9−30 cm. The prostate MRI examinations per month ranged from 1 to 600, and they were most commonly indicated for biopsy-naïve patients suspected of PCA in Japan and Singapore and staging of proven PCA in Korea and Taiwan. The most commonly used radiotracers for prostate positron emission tomography are prostate-specific membrane antigen in Singapore and fluorodeoxyglucose in three other countries. The most common timing for prostate MRI was before biopsy (29.9%). Prostate-targeted biopsies were performed in 63.8% of hospitals, usually by MRI-ultrasound fusion approach. The most common presentation was localized PCA in all four countries, and it was usually treated with radical prostatectomy. Conclusion: This survey showed the diverse technical details and the availability of imaging and biopsy in the evaluation of PCA. This suggests the need for an educational program for Asian radiologists to promote standardized evidence-based imaging approaches for the diagnosis and staging of PCA.
