The computation procedure for structural shape optimization is based on the heuristic optimization procedures, such as swarm intelligence(SI), that use patterns found in self-organizing phenomena observed in nature. Most SI techniques including particle swarm optimization(PSO) and artificial bee colony (ABC), attain a global optimal solution. The firefly algorithm (FA) can attain both a global optimaland local optimal solutions by setting suitable computational parameters. However, the method for setting these parameters is comparativelydifficult. In order to simplify the setting of these parameters, we implement a computational scheme where the distance betweentwo fireflies in the design variable space is dimensionless. The effectiveness and the validity of this FA are clarified by showingthe diversified solution for a global optimal solution and local optimal solutions using a local search in the structural shape optimizationof a free-form surface shell.

This study investigated the effects of reading while listening (RWL) and reading only (RO) modes on learners’ reading comprehension and perceptions. A total of 157 Japanese high school learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) participated in this study. All the participants read four reading passages: two passages with RWL mode and two passages with RO mode. The participants were also divided into three different proficiency groups based on their vocabulary levels test score. The findings showed that the high and medium proficiency groups scored higher, regardless of having audio support or not. By contrast, the low proficiency group scored higher with RWL mode than with RO mode. The results of a questionnaire related to learners’ perceptions supported the view that the low group benefitted more from RWL mode compared to the other two groups. These findings indicated that learners’ vocabulary levels and two reading modes affected their reading performance differently. Furthermore, the findings show that the simultaneous reading and listening mode is an effective method to develop reading skills and motivation toward reading, especially for low proficiency learners.

This paper discusses the significance of detailed grammatical explanations of language construction in teaching. Since recent trends in language teaching incline to the oral approach, learners tend to misunderstand the necessity of learning grammar. To acquire practical language use, however, requires grammatical knowledge of constructions which are employed in the target language. As is pointed out by O'Dowd (1998), there is a gap between linguistic theory and language teaching. A great deal of linguistic theories which could be useful in language teaching are not well known in general. By taking up the secondary predicate construction, which is often discussed in the linguistics world but is poorly focused on in language teaching, I argue that learners should not just memorize a number of idiomatic expressions with a particular construction, but should be given a grammatical or even theoretical explanation of the structure. Learning by rote has limitations as a learning method. To facilitate both comprehension and retention, I suggest using TV drama as an audiovisual aide since these programs contain a wide variety of naturalistic examples.
