Myofascial Orofacial Pain Exacerbated after Masseteric Nerve Neurectomy

Nam, Hyun,Ko, Daeun,Kang, Jin-Kyu,Shim, YoungJoo Korean Academy of Orofacial Pain and Oral Medicine 2020 Journal of Oral Medicine and Pain Vol.45 No.4

Myofascial pain (MFP) is one of the most common causes of persistent orofacial pain. Patients with chronic myofascial orofacial pain may present with diffuse heterotopic pain, complicating the correct diagnosis. Treatment of chronic MFP should focus on the elimination of aetiologic factors. This article describes two cases of chronic MFP of the masticatory muscles, whose symptoms were exacerbated after masseteric nerve neurectomy. The patients had suffered from irrelevant treatment which did not resolve the symptom. Their symptom was managed by conventional treatment protocol. These cases emphasize the importance of correct diagnosis and evidence-based approach.

Articular Eminence Morphology of Temporomandibular Joint in Young Korean Adults

Nam, Hyun,Shim, Young-Joo,Kang, Jin-Kyu Korean Academy of Orofacial Pain and Oral Medicine 2019 Journal of Oral Medicine and Pain Vol.44 No.2

Purpose: The aim of this study was to analyse and evaluate the morphology of the articular eminence of temporomandibular joint in young Korean adults using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: One hundred seventy-one subjects (59 males, 112 females) in the 20s were examined using CBCT. Width and height of articular eminence, top-roof line angle, best-fit line angle, joint space were measured. For the group comparisons, independent t-test was used with the level of significance established at $p{\leq}0.05$. Results: In asymptomatic young Korean adults, average eminence width was $9.49{\pm}1.62mm$ in males and $9.33{\pm}1.36mm$ in females. Average eminence height was $7.23{\pm}1.81mm$ in males and $6.82{\pm}1.31mm$ in females. Average eminence inclination of measured by top-roof line angle was $37.09^{\circ}{\pm}7.74^{\circ}$ in males and $36.12^{\circ}{\pm}5.65^{\circ}$ in females. Average eminence inclination measured by best-fit line angle was $50.79^{\circ}{\pm}11.49^{\circ}$ in males and $48.43^{\circ}{\pm}9.05^{\circ}$ in females. Average joint space was $3.03{\pm}0.67mm$ in males and $2.63{\pm}0.68mm$ in females. Conclusions: Increasing age did not affect the morphology of the articular eminence in asymptomatic young Korean adults. Males had slightly larger eminence width, height, top-roof line angle, best-fit line angle and joint space, but no statistical significance (p>0.05) was observed only in the joint space (p=0.001). There was no side-to-side difference in morphology (p>0.05).

Acute Malocclusion Caused by Articular Disc Perforation: A Case Report

Nam, Hyun,Shim, Young-Joo,Kang, Jin-Kyu Korean Academy of Orofacial Pain and Oral Medicine 2018 Journal of Oral Medicine and Pain Vol.43 No.4

Patients with temporomandibular disorder often present with acute occlusal change and properly managed with conservative treatment. If such change is caused by unusual etiology, differential diagnosis may be challenged. This article describes the diagnosis of a patient exhibiting pain and acute posterior open bite on the ipsilateral side after chewing hard food. After initial conservative treatment failed to resolve the complaint, magnetic resonance imaging was ordered and confirmed partial perforation of articular disc. Disc perforation itself is usually chronic in nature, but sudden macrotrauma may also cause the disorder. However, occlusal discrepancy caused by disc perforation is rare and seldom reported. We present a case of acute malocclusion caused by disc perforation with a review of related literature.

Characterization of Primary Epithelial Cells Derived from Human Salivary Gland Contributing to in vivo Formation of Acini-like Structures

        Nam, Hyun,Kim, Ji-Hye,Hwang, Ji-Yoon,Kim, Gee-Hye,Kim, Jae-Won,Jang, Mi,Lee, Jong-Ho,Park, Kyungpyo,Lee, Gene Korean Society for Molecular and Cellular Biology 2018 Molecules and cells Vol.41 No.6

Patients with head and neck cancer are treated with therapeutic irradiation, which can result in irreversible salivary gland dysfunction. Because there is no complete cure for such patients, stem cell therapy is an emerging alternative for functional restoration of salivary glands. In this study, we investigated in vitro characteristics of primarily isolated epithelial cells from human salivary gland (Epi-SGs) and in vivo formation of acini-like structures by Epi-SGs. Primarily isolated Epi-SGs showed typical epithelial cell-like morphology and expressed E-cadherin but not N-cadherin. Epi-SGs expressed epithelial stem cell (EpiSC) and embryonic stem cell (ESC) markers. During long-term culture, the expression of EpiSC and ESC markers was highly detected and maintained within the core population with small size and low cytoplasmic complexity. The core population expressed cytokeratin 7 and cytokeratin 14, known as duct markers indicating that Epi-SGs might be originated from the duct. When Epi-SGs were transplanted in vivo with Matrigel, acini-like structures were readily formed at 4 days after transplantation and they were maintained at 7 days after transplantation. Taken together, our data suggested that Epi-SGs might contain stem cells which were positive for EpiSC and ESC markers, and Epi-SGs might contribute to the regeneration of acini-like structures in vivo. We expect that Epi-SGs will be useful source for the functional restoration of damaged salivary gland.

      • Competing Reactions of Vinyl and Hydroxyl Groups of Vinyl Alcohol on Ge(100): Effects of Vinyl Substituent on Dissociative Adsorption

Nam, Hyun,Kim, Eun Suk,Kim, Do Hwan American Chemical Society 2018 The Journal of Physical Chemistry Part C Vol.122 No.30

<P>We investigated the adsorption of vinyl alcohol onto Ge(100) surface by performing density functional theory calculations. The C-O dissociative adsorption of vinyl alcohol produces two fragments, a hydroxyl group and a vinyl group, each of which bonds with a different germanium atom. The dissociated vinyl and hydroxyl groups passivate the dangling bonds of surface germanium atoms to form the most stable configurations containing HO-Ge-Ge-CH═CH2 linkages. The reactions of the C═C bond of the vinyl group can generate enantiomer products with characteristic stereochemistry. The cycloaddition of the vinyl group is not favored thermodynamically, although paired adsorption at an adjacent site can stabilize cycloaddition structures. Our kinetic study reveals that the C-O dissociative adsorption has a larger activation barrier than O-H dissociative adsorption, although the transition state energy is close to that of the reactants. According to our analysis of the kinetics and thermodynamics of this system, the C-O dissociative adsorption, which produces an unreacted vinyl group perpendicular to the germanium surface, is a major reaction at room temperature. Our simulated images of the stable adsorption structures show the characteristic electronic density features of the functional groups.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

      • Angiogenic Capacity of Dental Pulp Stem Cell Regulated by SDF-1 <i>α</i> -CXCR4 Axis

        Nam, Hyun,Kim, Gee-Hye,Bae, Yoon-Kyung,Jeong, Da-Eun,Joo, Kyeung-Min,Lee, Kyunghoon,Lee, Sun-Ho Hindawi 2017 Stem cells international Vol.2017 No.-

<P>Previously, the perivascular characteristics of dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) were reported, which suggested the potential application of DPSCs as perivascular cell source. In this study, we investigated whether DPSCs had angiogenic capacity by coinjection with human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) in vivo; in addition, we determined the role of stromal cell-derived factor 1-<I>α</I> (SDF-1<I>α</I>) and C-X-C chemokine receptor type 4 (CXCR4) axis in the mutual interaction between DPSCs and HUVECs. Primarily isolated DPSCs showed mesenchymal stem cell- (MSC-) like characteristics. Moreover, DPSCs expressed perivascular markers such as NG2, <I>α</I>-smooth muscle actin (<I>α</I>-SMA), platelet-derived growth factor receptor <I>β</I> (PDGFR<I>β</I>), and CD146. In vivo angiogenic capacity of DPSCs was demonstrated by in vivo Matrigel plug assay. We could observe microvessel-like structures in the coinjection of DPSCs and HUVECs at 7 days postinjection. To block SDF-1<I>α</I> and CXCR4 axis between DPSCs and HUVECs, AMD3100, a CXCR4 antagonist, was added into Matrigel plug. No significant microvessel-like structures were observed at 7 days postinjection. In conclusion, DPSCs have perivascular characteristics that contribute to in vivo angiogenesis. The findings of this study have potential applications in neovascularization of engineered tissues and vascular diseases.</P>

Establishment of Hertwig's Epithelial Root Sheath/Epithelial Rests of Malassez Cell Line from Human Periodontium

        Nam, Hyun,Kim, Ji-Hye,Kim, Jae-Won,Seo, Byoung-Moo,Park, Joo-Cheol,Kim, Jung-Wook,Lee, Gene Korean Society for Molecular and Cellular Biology 2014 Molecules and cells Vol.37 No.7

Human Hertwig's epithelial root sheath/epithelial rests of Malassez (HERS/ERM) cells are epithelial remnants of teeth residing in the periodontium. Although the functional roles of HERS/ERM cells have yet to be elucidated, they are a unique epithelial cell population in adult teeth and are reported to have stem cell characteristics. Therefore, HERS/ERM cells might play a role as an epithelial component for the repair or regeneration of dental hard tissues; however, they are very rare population in periodontium and the primary isolation of them is considered to be difficult. To overcome these problems, we immortalized primary HERS/ERM cells isolated from human periodontium using SV40 large T antigen (SV40 LT) and performed a characterization of the immortalized cell line. Primary HERS/ERM cells could not be maintained for more than 6 passages; however, immortalized HERS/ERM cells were maintained for more than 20 passages. There were no differences in the morphological and immunophenotypic characteristics of HERS/ERM cells and immortalized HERS/ERM cells. The expression of epithelial stem cell and embryonic stem cell markers was maintained in immortalized HERS/ERM cells. Moreover, immortalized HERS/ERM cells could acquire mesenchymal phenotypes through the epithelial-mesenchymal transition via TGF-${\beta}1$. In conclusion, we established an immortalized human HERS/ERM cell line with SV40 LT and expect this cell line to contribute to the understanding of the functional roles of HERS/ERM cells and the tissue engineering of teeth.

Effects of Femvertising in Korea : How Young Female Consumers Respond to Female Empowerment Ads

        Namhyun Um(엄남현) 한국광고홍보학회 2021 광고연구 Vol.- No.130

Little research has been done on effects of femvertising in Asian countries. Hence we know little about how Asian consumers respond to femvertising. This study is designed to explore the effects of femvertising on attitude toward ads, brand, and purchase intention. For the current study a total of 316 college female students participated and, in return, received a course credit. The study’s findings suggest that femvertising leads to more favorable attitudes toward ads and brands. Regarding consumers’ purchase intention, though, we found it to not be necessarily influenced by it. As hypothesized, individuals possessing strong attitudes toward feminism had more positive attitudes toward ad and brand as well as purchase intention than those possessing weak attitudes toward it. Similarly, individuals with high self-efficacy may have more positive attitudes toward ad and brand as well as purchase intention than those with low self-efficacy. Limitations and areas for further research are discussed.
