Background/Aims: Although multiple treatment options exist for the management of sigmoid colon volvulus, no study has examined the factors associated with successful endoscopic detorsion. This study aimed to examine the clinical course of patients with sigmoid colon volvulus and to identify factors related to successful endoscopic detorsion. Methods: This study included 30 cases (21 patients) of sigmoid volvulus from among 545 cases of intestinal obstruction at a single center. We retrospectively examined the clinical course and the factors associated with the possibility of endoscopic detorsion of sigmoid colon volvulus. Results: The rate of laxative use among the study participants was 76.2%; the rate of comorbid neuropsychiatric disorders was 61.9%; and 57.1% of patients had a history of open abdominal surgery. All patients were initially treated with endoscopic detorsion, and this procedure had a 61.9% success rate. The recurrence rate after detorsion was as high as 46.2%, but detorsion during revision endoscopy was possible in all cases. Statistical analysis revealed that the absence of abdominal tenderness (P =0.027), the use of laxatives (P =0.027), and a history of open abdominal surgery (P =0.032) were factors predictive of successful endoscopic detorsion. Conclusions: The results of our study are consistent with previous reports with respect to the success rate of endoscopic detorsion, the subsequent recurrence rate, and the proportion of patients requiring surgical treatment. In addition, we identified the absence of abdominal tenderness, the use of laxatives, and history of open abdominal surgery as factors predicting successful endoscopic detorsion of sigmoid colon volvulus. Cytological examination is widely used as a diagnostic tool because of the ease of collecting cells from the involved area. However, the diagnostic yield of cytological examination is unsatisfactory; the reasons include sampling error, poorly prepared samples, small numbers of malignant cells, and low grades of cellular atypia. In this study, we focused on the high infectivity of adenovirus towards epithelial cells and applied the luciferase-expressing adenoviral vector to a new cancer cell detection tool. In addition, adenoviral infectivity was enhanced by modifying viral fiber proteins. The sensitivity of the diagnostic tool was tested using the NCI-H1299 lung cancer cell line, and validated in body fluid samples from cancer patients with a variety of etiology. Results showed that the adenovirus efficiently transfected NCI-H1299 with high sensitivity. Only 10 cancer cells were sufficient for detection of luciferase signals. In body fluid samples, the adenovirus confirmed the diagnosis for malignant and benign cancer, but not in non-epithelial cell derived samples. This study provides proof-of-concept for a more reliable and sensitive diagnostic tool for epithelium-derived cancer.

[OBJECTIVES] Dynamic knee valgus is composed of hip-knee coupling. While females differ from males in passive hip motion, hip rotation range may alter muscle mechanics and neuromuscular activity. This study aimed to compare knee abduction biomechanics during double-legged drop-landing between males and females with different hip rotation ranges. [METHODS] This study included five females with the range of hip internal rotation (IR) > the range of hip external rotation (ER), five females with ER>IR, four males with IR>ER, and five males with ER>IR. There was no difference in other hip motions among them or no difference in hip muscle strength between the same sex groups. Three-dimensional motion analyses of the hip and knee joints were performed during double-legged drop-landing. [RESULTS] Multiple regression analysis of females with IR>ER showed that peak knee abduction moment (KAM) was associated with maximal hip abduction moment before detecting peak KAM whereas peak knee abduction angle (KAA) correlated with no variable. In females with ER>IR, peak KAM was associated with maximal hip ER moment before detecting peak KAM, hip ER muscle strength and hip adduction range while peak KAA correlated with peak hip abduction moment before detecting peak KAM. In males with IR>ER, peak KAM was associated with hip ER range and hip adductor strength whereas peak KAA correlated with maximal hip ER moment and maximal hip IR angle during landing. In males with ER>IR, peak KAM was associated with hip extensor strength, hip abduction range and hip flexion range whereas peak KAA correlated with hip ER moment before detecting peak KAM, hip ER muscle strength, and hip adduction range. [CONCLUSIONS] Hip rotation range may differentially affect hip-knee coupling strategy for knee abduction control during double-legged drop-landing between males and females.

To survive in the current shipbuilding industry, it is of vital importance for shipyards to have the ship components' accuracy evaluated efficiently during most of the manufacturing steps. Evaluating components' accuracy by comparing each component's point cloud data scanned by laser scanners and the ship's design data formatted in CAD cannot be processed efficiently when (1) extract components from point cloud data include irregular obstacles endogenously, or when (2) registration of the two data sets have no clear direction setting. This paper presents reformative point cloud data processing methods to solve these problems. K-d tree construction of the point cloud data fastens a neighbor searching of each point. Region growing method performed on the neighbor points of the seed point extracts the continuous part of the component, while curved surface fitting and B-spline curved line fitting at the edge of the continuous part recognize the neighbor domains of the same component divided by obstacles' shadows. The ICP (Iterative Closest Point) algorithm conducts a registration of the two sets of data after the proper registration's direction is decided by principal component analysis. By experiments conducted at the shipyard, 200 curved shell plates are extracted from the scanned point cloud data, and registrations are conducted between them and the designed CAD data using the proposed methods for an accuracy evaluation. Results show that the methods proposed in this paper support the accuracy evaluation targeted point cloud data processing efficiently in practice.

Reaction cross sections for Cr induced by neutrons at 287 MeV were measured by using ^7Li(p,n) reaction at N0 beam line in the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Osaka University. To estimate quasi-monoenergetic neutron-induced cross sections, the Cr sample was irradiated on the two angles of 0° and 30° for the axis of the primary proton beam. Proton-induced reaction cross sections for Cr at 300 MeV were also measured. The measured cross section data in the ^(nat)Cr(n,x) and ^(nat)Cr(p,x) reactions are compared with the literature values and the JENDL high-energy file. Furthermore, those in the ^(nat)Cr(n,x) reactions are also compared with those in the ^(nat)Cr(p,x) reaction.
