Atrial conduction times and left atrial mechanical functions and their relation with diastolic func-tion in prediabetic patients

( Naile Eris Gudul ),( Turgut Karabag ),( Muhammet Rasit Sayin ),( Taner Bayraktaroglu ),( Mustafa Aydin ) 대한내과학회 2017 The Korean Journal of Internal Medicine Vol.32 No.2

Background/Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate atrial conduction times and left atrial mechanical functions, the noninvasive predictors of atrial fibrillation, in prediabetic patients with impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). Methods: Study included 59 patients (23 males, 36 females; mean age 52.5 ± 10.6 years) diagnosed with IFG or IGT by the American Diabetes Association criteria, and 43 healthy adults (22 males, 21 females; mean age 48.5 ± 12.1 years). Conventional and tissue Doppler echocardiography were performed. The electromechanical delay parameters were measured from the onset of the P wave on the surface electrocardiogram to the onset of the atrial systolic wave on tissue Doppler imaging from septum, lateral, and right ventricular annuli. The left atrial volumes were calculated by the disk method. Left atrial mechanical functions were calculated. Results: The mitral E/A and E`/A` ratios measured from the lateral and septal annuli were significantly lower in the prediabetics compared to the controls. The interatrial and left atrial electromechanical delay were significantly longer in prediabetic group compared to the controls. Left atrial active emptying volume (LAAEV) and fraction (LAAEF) were significantly higher in the prediabetics than the controls. LAAEV and LAAEF were significantly correlated with E/A, lateral and septal E`/A`. Conclusions: In the prediabetic patients, the atrial conduction times and P wave dispersion on surface electrocardiographic were longer before the development of overt diabetes. In addition, the left atrial mechanical functions were impaired secondary to a deterioration in the diastolic functions in the prediabetic patients.

      • What Is the Philosophy of Movement?

Thomas Nail Academy of Mobility Humanities 2022 Mobility Humanities Vol.1 No.1

This paper is an introduction to the philosophy of movement. It describes the contemporary motivations and goals of the project as well as its similarities and differences with the mobilities paradigm and process philosophy. I argue that what is unique about the philosophy of movement is that it is the only philosophy that accepts the primacy of motion as its methodological starting point. The philosophy of movement is the analysis of phenomena across social, aesthetic, scientific, and ontological domains from the perspective of motion. It is a philosophy of indeterminacy or processes understood as processes. That is, not as a sequence of static discontinuous occasions as or as a continuous vital energy. In the philosophy of movement, the world is made of processes whose relatively stable iterations generate the phenomena we see around us. Things are emergent “metastable” patterns of indeterminate motion.

The production of Ni and co-gahnite pigments using ZnO powder produced from metal slags

Emel Ozel,Nail Gurbuz,Emrah Coskun 한양대학교 세라믹연구소 2010 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.11 No.2

In this study, Ni and Co-gahnite pigments were produced from Al2O3 powder and ZnO powder obtained from industrial metal slags. Different pigment compositions were prepared by adding metal oxides (NiO or Co3O4) and mineralisers (NaF, CaF2 or Li2CO3). Pigments were calcined in an electric furnace at 1300, 1400 and 1450 oC for 4 h at a heating rate of 2 K·minute−1. The pigment powders obtained were added to a transparent ceramic glaze and to porcelainised tile bodies. The pigment colours were determined using L*a*b* measurements from a spectrometer. On one hand, the results show that Ni-gahnite pigment is not useful for industrial applications because it has poor colour intensities and stabilities. On the other hand, our results also show that Co-gahnite pigments can be produced using ZnO from industrial metal slags, and that they have an intense blue colour.

      • Advances in pharmaceutical materials and processing

        Morris, Kenneth R.,Nail, Steven L.,Peck, Garnet E.,Byrn, Stephen R.,Griesser, Ulrich J.,Stowell, Joseph G.,Hwang, Sung-Joo,Park, Kinam 충남대학교 약학대학 의약품개발연구소 1998 藥學論文集 Vol.14 No.-

Advances in pharmaceutical materials and processing require new generations of pharmaceutical technologies, which in turn require an improved understanding of each step in the unit processes of dosage form development. The unit processes range from raw material qualification to final product release using process monitoring of critical steps. The authors illustrate some recent research trends in understanding and improving pharmaceutical materials and processing through the use of experience obtained within several research programs at Purdue University (West Lafayette, IN, USA).

Liver dose reduction by deep inspiration breath hold technique in right-sided breast irradiation

Haji, Gunel,Nabizade, Ulviye,Kazimov, Kamal,Guliyeva, Naile,Isayev, Isa The Korean Society for Radiation Oncology 2019 Radiation Oncology Journal Vol.37 No.4

Purpose: Deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH) is a well-established technique that enables efficient cardiac sparing in patients with left-sided breast cancer. The aim of the current study was to determine if DIBH is effective for reducing radiation exposure of of liver and other organs at risk in right breast radiotherapy (RT). Materials and Methods: Twenty patients with right-sided breast cancer were enrolled in this study. Three-dimensional conformal RT plans were generated for each patient, with two different computed tomography scans of free breathing (FB) and DIBH. Nodes were contoured according to the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group contouring guidelines. Dose-volume histograms for the target volume coverage and organs at risk were evaluated and analyzed. Results: DIBH plans showed significant reduction in mean liver dose (5.59 ± 2.07 Gy vs. 2.54 ± 1.40 Gy; p = 0.0003), V20Gy (148.38 ± 73.05 vs. 64.19 ± 51.07 mL; p = 0.0003) and V10Gy (195.34 ± 93.57 vs. 89.81 ± 57.28 mL; p = 0.0003) volumes compared with FB plans. Right lung doses were also significantly reduced in DIBH plans. Heart and left lung doses showed small but statistically significant improvement with application of the DIBH technique. Conclusion: We report that the use of DIBH for right-sided breast cancer significantly reduces the radiation doses to the liver, lungs, and heart.

Pelvic Hydatid Disease: CT and MRI Findings Causing Sciatica

        Hatice Tuba Sanal,Murat Kocaoglu,Nail Bulakbasi,Duzgun Yildirim 대한영상의학회 2007 Korean Journal of Radiology Vol.8 No.6

Pelvic masses, especially hydatid disease, rarely present with sciatica (1, 2). We present the computed tomography (CT) and the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of a 49-year-old female patient with presacral hydatid disease, who was evaluated for her sciatica. We also want to emphasize the importance of assessing the pelvis of patients with symptoms and clinical findings that are inconsistent and that cannot be satisfactorily explained by the spinal imaging findings.

Can Right-Handed Surgeons Insert Upper Thoracic Pedicle Screws in much Comfortable Position? Right-Handedness Problem on the Left Side

Akyoldas, Goktug,Senturk, Salim,Yaman, Onur,Ozdemir, Nail,Acaroglu, Emre The Korean Neurosurgical Society 2018 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.61 No.5

Objective : Thoracic pedicles have special and specific properties. In particular, upper thoracic pedicles are positioned in craniocaudal plane. Therefore, manipulation of thoracic pedicle screws on the left side is difficult for right-handed surgeons. We recommend a new position to insert thoracic pedicle screw that will be much comfortable for spine surgeons. Methods : We retrospectively reviewed 33 patients who underwent upper thoracic pedicle screw instrumentation. In 15 patients, a total of 110 thoracic pedicle screws were inserted to the upper thoracic spine (T1-6) with classical position (anesthesiologist and monitor were placed near to patient's head. Surgeons were standing classically near to patient's body while patients were lying in prone position). In 18 patients, a total of 88 thoracic pedicle screws were inserted to the upper thoracic spine with the new standing position-surgeons stand by the head of the patient and the anesthesia monitor laterally and under patient's belt level. All the operations performed by the same senior spine surgeons with the help of C-arm. Postoperative computed tomography scans were obtained to assess the screw placement. The screw malposition and pedicle wall violations were divided and evaluated separately. Cortical penetration were measured and graded at either : 1-2 mm penetration, 2-4 mm penetration and >4 mm penetration. Results : Total 198 screws were inserted with two different standing positions. Of 198 screws 110 were in the classical positioning group and 88 were in the new positioning group. Incorrect screw placement was found in 33 screws (16.6%). The difference between total screw malposition by both standing positions were found to be statistically significant (p=0.011). The difference between total pedicle wall violations by both standing positions were found to be statistically significant (p=0.003). Conclusion : Right-handedness is a problem during the upper thoracic pedicle screw placement on the left side. Changing the surgeon's position standing near to patient's head could provide a much comfortable position to orient the craniocaudal plane of the thoracic pedicles.
