      • Reducing the Static Friction in Hydraulic Cylinders by Maintaining Relative Velocity Between Piston and Cylinder

        Morten Ottestad,Nicolai Nilsen,Michael Rygaard Hansen 제어로봇시스템학회 2012 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2012 No.10

This paper is concerned with friction in hydraulic cylinders and it’s influence on the performance of hydralically actuated system. A method for the elimination of stiction in hydraulic cylinders is presented and experimentally verified. The method utilizes the rotational degree of freedom between the piston and the cylinder to add relative velocity at the contact surfaces between piston and cylinder when the main axial motion is zero. For modeling purposes an augmentation of the Stribeck friction force equation is introduced that reflects the influence of the added motion. The possible impact of stiction elimination on the performance of heave compensation equipment is discussed and examplified via time domain simulations.

Functional Modelling for Fault Diagnosis and its Application for NPP

Morten Lind,XINXIN ZHANG 한국원자력학회 2014 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.46 No.6

The paper presents functional modelling and its application for diagnosis in nuclear power plants. Functional modelling is defined and its relevance for coping with the complexity of diagnosis in large scale systems like nuclear plants is explained. The diagnosis task is analyzed and it is demonstrated that the levels of abstraction in models for diagnosis must reflect plant knowledge about goals and functions which is represented in functional modelling. Multilevel flow modelling (MFM), which is a method for functional modelling, is introduced briefly and illustrated with a cooling system example. The use of MFM for reasoning about causes and consequences is explained in detail and demonstrated using the reasoning tool, the MFMSuite. MFM applications in nuclear power systems are described by two examples: a PWR; and an FBR reactor. The PWR example show how MFM can be used to model and reason about operating modes. The FBR example illustrates how the modelling development effort can be managed by proper strategies including decomposition and reuse.

A Survey of Asian Family Business Research

        Morten Bennedsen,Yi-Chun Lu,Vikas Mehrotra 한국증권학회 2022 Asia-Pacific Journal of Financial Studies Vol.51 No.1

We survey the literature on family firms with a focus on Asian countries. We begin with identifying three key motivational drivers of international research on family business—their dominance, relative performance, and extent of family embeddedness in the business. Second, we provide a brief survey of family firms in eight Asian economies with a focus on the history and current challenges faced by family firms in each country. Third, we document the variety of family firm definitions used in the literature and the resulting difficulty in drawing inferences due to a lack of definitional consistency. Fourth, we discuss the strategic advantages family assets such as legacy and networks bring to family firms in the Asian context. Fifth, we identify some unique challenges family firms face in their countries, and provide examples of how ownership and succession structures mitigate these challenges. We close this survey by suggesting some open research questions relevant for Asian family firms.

Enhancement of Human Adaptive Immune Responses by Administration of a High-Molecular-Weight Polysaccharide Extract from the Cyanobacterium Arthrospira platensis

        Morten Løbner,Anette Walsted,Rune Larsen,Klaus Bendtzen,Claus Henrik Nielsen 한국식품영양과학회 2008 Journal of medicinal food Vol.11 No.2

The effect of consumption of Immulina, a high-molecular-weight polysaccharide extract from the cyanobac-terium Arthrospira platensis, on adaptive immune responses was investigated by evaluation of changes in leukocyte respon-siveness to two foreign recall antigens, Candida albicans(CA) and tetanus toxoid (TT), in vitro. Consumption of Immulinaby 11 healthy male volunteers caused an immediate, but temporary, increase of CA-induced CD4. T-helper (Th) cell pro-liferation (P. .02). TT-induced Th cell proliferation was increased in individuals over 50 years of age (P. .05) and corre-lated with age (P. .02). Consumption for 8 days enhanced the CA-induced B cell proliferation (P. .02), but after 56 daysa diminution was seen (P. .03). The CA-elicited production of the Th1 cytokines tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-., interleukin(IL)-2, and interferon (IFN)-. was increased after Immunlina administration for 3 days (P. .001,. .03, and. .007, re-spectively), and increased IL-2 production persisted after 56 days (P. .004). The TNF-., IFN-., and IL-6 responses to TTwere enhanced after 8 and 14 days (P. .002.05), while IL-5 responses increased significantly within 3 days (P. .04) andfell below baseline levels after 14 days (P. .008). Conversely, consumption for 3 days inhibited the IL-4 responses to bothCA and TT (P. .008 and P. .03, respectively). No effects on IL-10 responses were observed. Upon addition to normalmononuclear cells in vitro, Immulina elicited strong TNF-., IL-1., and IL-6 responses, indicating that it acts by inducing apro-inflammatory state. Taken together, the data suggest that Immulina causes an age-dependent, temporary enhancement ofadaptive immune responses.

        International <i>Salmonella</i> Typhimurium DT104 Infections, 1992–2001

        Helms, Morten,Ethelberg, Steen,Mølbak, Kå,re U.S. Department of Health and Human Services * Cen 2005 Emerging Infectious Diseases Vol.11 No.6

<P>The incidence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) <I>Salmonella</I> Typhimurium infections in humans, and in particular MDR definitive phage type 104 (DT104), has increased substantially in many countries in the last 2 decades, often associated with increased illness. To examine the magnitude of this problem, a survey was conducted among countries with available antimicrobial resistance or phage typing surveillance data. A total of 29, primarily industrialized, countries participated in the survey, which covered the years 1992–2001. Overall, the incidence of MDR <I>S</I>. Typhimurium and DT104 increased continuously during this period, although the problem affected primarily Europe and North America. The increase appeared to have peaked in the United Kingdom but not in other countries. Also, the incidence of quinolone-resistant <I>S</I>. Typhimurium was increasing. This survey implies that MDR <I>S</I>. Typhimurium constitutes an increasing public health problem in large parts of the world and emphasizes the importance of surveillance and control programs.</P>

      • LiCe(BH4)3Cl, a New Lithium-Ion Conductor and Hydrogen Storage Material with Isolated Tetranuclear Anionic Clusters

        Ley, Morten B.,Ravnsbæk, Dorthe B.,Filinchuk, Yaroslav,Lee, Young-Su,Janot, Raphaë,l,Cho, Young Whan,Skibsted, Jørgen,Jensen, Torben R. American Chemical Society 2012 Chemistry of materials Vol.24 No.9

<P>Mechanochemical synthesis using CeCl3-MBH4 (M = Li, Na or K) mixtures are investigated and produced a new compound, LiCe(BH4)3Cl, which crystallizes in a cubic space group <I>I</I>4̅3<I>m</I>, <I>a</I> = 11.7204(2) Å. The structure contains isolated tetranuclear anionic clusters [Ce4Cl4(BH4)12]4– with a distorted cubane Ce4Cl4 core, charge-balanced by Li+ cations. Each Ce atom coordinates three chloride ions and three borohydride groups via the η3–BH3 faces, thus completing the coordination environment to an octahedron. Combination of synchrotron radiation powder X-ray diffraction (SR-PXD), powder neutron diffraction and density functional theory (DFT) optimization show that Li cations are disordered, occupying 2/3 of the 12<I>d</I> Wyckoff site. DFT calculation indicates that LiCe(BH4)3Cl is stabilized by higher entropy rather than lower enthalpy, in accord with the disorder in Li positions. The structural model also agrees well with the very high lithium ion conductivity measured for LiCe(BH4)3Cl of 1 × 10–4 Scm–1 at <I>T</I> = 20 °C. In situ SR-PXD reveals that the decomposition products consist of LiCl, CeB6 and CeH2. The Sieverts measurements show that 4.7 wt % H2 is released during heating to 500 °C. After rehydrogenation at 400 °C and <I>p</I>(H2) = 100 bar for 24 h an amount of 1.8 wt % H2 is released in the second dehydrogenation. The 11B MAS NMR spectra of the central and satellite transitions for LiCe(B(D/H)4)3Cl reveal highly asymmetric manifolds of spinning sidebands from a single 11B site, reflecting dipolar couplings of the 11B nuclear spin with the paramagnetic electron spin of the Ce3+ ions.</P><P>A new type of energy storage materials is discovered, LiCe(BH4)3Cl, which contains hydrogen and simultaneously is a fast lithium ion conductor. • Nanoscale Semiconductor “X” on Substrate “Y” – Processes, Devices, and Applications

        Madsen, Morten,Takei, Kuniharu,Kapadia, Rehan,Fang, Hui,Ko, Hyunhyub,Takahashi, Toshitake,Ford, Alexandra C.,Lee, Min Hyung,Javey, Ali WILEY‐VCH Verlag 2011 ADVANCED MATERIALS Vol.23 No.28

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Recent advancements in the integration of nanoscale, single‐crystalline semiconductor ‘X’ on substrate ‘Y’ (XoY) for use in transistor and sensor applications are presented. XoY is a generic materials framework for enabling the fabrication of various novel devices, without the constraints of the original growth substrates. Two specific XoY process schemes, along with their associated materials, device and applications are presented. In one example, the layer transfer of ultrathin III–V semiconductors with thicknesses of just a few nanometers on Si substrates is explored for use as energy‐efficient electronics, with the fabricated devices exhibiting excellent electrical properties. In the second example, contact printing of nanowire‐arrays on thin, bendable substrates for use as artificial electronic‐skin is presented. Here, the devices are capable of conformably covering any surface, and providing a real‐time, two‐dimensional mapping of external stimuli for the realization of smart functional surfaces. This work is an example of the emerging field of “<I>translational nanotechnology</I>” as it bridges basic science of nanomaterials with practical applications.</P>
