The Politics of Natural Disasters in Gary Pak`s Children of a Fireland

Hawai`i is an example of a place where decolonization has yet to take place, and where sovereignty is very much a current issue. Gary Pak, hailed as one of the most prominent Asian-Hawaiian authors, identifies himself primarily as a local writer whose fiction addresses the issue of Hawai`i`s cultural and (neo)colonial politics. His 2004 novel Children of a Fireland, set in an imaginary town of Kanewai, takes under scrutiny the pervasive practices of (neo)colonialism and its disturbing effects on the environment and indigenous culture. This paper argues that the many natural disasters in the novel operate on a political, and not on a cultural level. The natural disasters are presented as supernatural, even fantastical events in order to expose not just the violent impact colonialism has had on both peoples and the land, but also the manner in which it was carried out through the divine sanction of the Church. Therefore, by way of mapping religion-Christianity vs. shamanism-onto the landscape of natural phenomena, and by demonstrating the novel`s strategic use of catastrophic events, this paper argues that all fantastical and environmental catastrophes can be traced back to US imperialism. When true decolonization cannot take place, the supernatural disasters, which happen at sites of monumental importance to indigenous history, restore the landscape to its precolonial state. Ultimately, the land can only be reclaimed through the imagination. By erasing marks of colonial history and by blurring, at least, temporarily the distinctions between the local and settler communities, the supernatural disasters offer a means of overcoming imperialism.

Laboratory as a Service: Architecture, Implementation and Experiences

In Computer Science study, practical experience is gained in the computer laboratory, however the laboratory funding and maintenance require huge resources. This is the main reason why virtual computing laboratory implementations in academic environments have increased our major interest. At University of Ljubljana, we are the only higher education institution using virtual laboratories as an integral part of any Computer Science courses not only in Slovenia but also on the Balkans. Initially we have built our own virtual laboratory. Later, we merged our implementation with NCSU VCL and integrated the new virtual laboratory with learning management system and identity management system. We also plan to integrate it with our student information system. In this paper we present our current implementation and future plans, we discuss how this can improve the learning outcomes and present our experiences and results gained in the spring semester of 2010 when used by more than 300 students who were turned out to have little significant technical difficulties. In order to complete two assignments, the students made 8.9 reservations on average, while the minimum of four was needed to accomplish the obligations. 27.5% of the students needed more than 10 reservations (16.8 on average) and are responsible for 52% of total reservations. Further research is needed to find true causes for that fact. Most popular hour of day was 3 pm and 10 pm, while the least popular was 6 in the morning, when no reservations have been made in the whole observed period of three weeks. Research also shows that the students tend to postpone their duties until just before the deadline. The findings enhance our motivation on further research related to keeping students engaged and active through the course.

파농과 사르트르: 비유(非有)의 틈을 비집고 들어가서

1952년 출판 이후, 파농의 『검은 피부, 하얀 가면』은 지속적으로 뜨거운 논쟁과 토론을 야기해왔다. 대부분의 비평은 익히 알려진대로 책의 결론 부분에 대해, 파농이 자신의 흑인 의식(black consciousness)에 대한 전반적인 논지를 버리고 새로우며 정의되지 않은 패러다임으로의 전환을 꾀한다는 사실에 초점을 맞춘다. 그러나 이 글의 목적은 파농의 지적 궤도를 규정하는 사르트르적 실존주의와 파농 사이에 전문적인 공생 관계가 있음을 밝힘으로써, 파농이 결론부에 자신의 논지를 배반한다는 논란에 답하는 것이다. 이 글은 사르트르의 논지에 입각해 파농이 초월하려고 했던 것은 역사나 인종(race)의 개념이 아니라 말(speech)라는 것을 주장한다. 파농은 단순히 유태인 문제에 관한 성찰에 드러난 사르트르의 논리적 수사(修辭)를 전유하는 것이 아니라 사르트르의 존재(being) 개념을 옹호하기에 이른다. 한 인간은 행동을 통해서만 존재가 될 수 있다라는 사르트르의 유명한 주장은 파농이 종래의 철학적인 사유를 뒤로 하고 좀 더 행동적인 것을 추구하도록 자극했다. 진정한 흑인 의식에 대한 담론을 형성하는 것에 대한 갖가지 지적 도전들이 백인 담론에 의해 무색하게 되었을 때, 파농은 행동이야 말로 사회의 인종 구조를 전복시킬 수 있는 마지막 남은 수단이라고 주장한다. 『검은 피부, 하얀 가면』은 인종적 범주에 대한 방기가 아니라 행동을 촉구하는 외침이라고 읽어야 할 것이다. Ever since its publication in 1952, Frantz Fanon`s Black Skin, White Masks has generated an ongoing firestorm of controversy and debate. Much of the criticism has coalesced around the conclusion, where Fanon purportedly abandoned his overall argument on the importance of black consciousness, moving towards a new, undefined paradigm. The aim of this paper, however, will be to settle the alleged controversy by drawing on the professional symbiosis that characterized Fanon`s intellectual career, that is, Sartre`s strain of existentialism. Through Sartre, this paper will argue that what Fanon wanted to transcend were neither history nor the concept of race but speech itself. Fanon does not merely appropriate some of Sartre`s persuasive rhetoric from Anti-Semite and Jew, but comes to espouse Sartre`s concept of `being.` Sartre famously posited that one can only come into being through action, prompting Fanon to eventually abandon philosophical horizons in favour of more active pursuits. When all intellectual attempts at establishing an authentic black consciousness are invalidated by the white discourse, Fanon identifies action as the one remaining means of subverting the racial structure of societies. Black Skin, White Masks should not be read as a dismissal of racial categories, but as an earlier call to action.

Bidirectional Artificial Neural Networks for Mobile-Phone Fraud Detection

We propose a system for mobile-phone fraud detection based on a bidirectional artificial neural network (bi-ANN). The key advantage of such a system is the ability to detect fraud not only by offline processing of call detail records (CDR), but also in real time. The core of the system is a bi-ANN that predicts the behavior of individual mobile-phone users. We determined that the bi-ANN is capable of predicting complex time series (Call_Duration parameter) that are stored in the CDR.

Selective Growth of Highly Efficient Electrooptic Stilbazolium Crystals by Sequential Crystal Growth in Different Solvents

<P>We report on selective growth of highly efficient nonlinear optical stilbazolium crystals by using sequential crystal growth in different solvent systems. Stilbazolium-salt crystals DSTMS (<I>N,N</I>-dimethylamino-<I>N</I>′-methylstilbazolium 2,4,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonate) with state-of-the-art nonlinear optical properties exhibit a thin plate-like morphology when grown in methanol and a thick trapezoidal-like morphology when grown in acetonitrile. We demonstrate morphology and thickness control of bulk DSTMS crystals by using sequential crystal growth by choosing a different solvent for growing bulk crystals as for growing seed crystals. For crystals growing in methanol solution from trapezoidal-like seed crystals grown in acetonitrile solution, the average growth rate is similar as in methanol alone, but the specific growth rate is considerably different: the aspect ratio of such crystals may be 1 order of magnitude larger than for crystals growing in methanol alone. For crystals growing in acetonitrile solution from thin plate-like seed crystals grown in methanol solution, the thickness slowly increases, while the lateral size remains similar. Such morphology and thickness control of DSTMS by sequential crystal growth in different solvents is a promising technique for practical applications, where crystals of a certain thickness are desired, for example, for THz-wave generation, frequency conversion, electro-optics, and field detection.</P><P>Selective growth of the highly efficient nonlinear optical stilbazolium DSTMS (<I>N,N</I>-dimethylamino-<I>N</I>′-methylstilbazolium 2,4,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonate) crystals is successfully demonstrated by using sequential crystal growth in different solvent systems, which is a promising technique for practical applications including THz wave applications.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/cgdefu/2011/cgdefu.2011.11.issue-7/cg200329m/production/images/medium/cg-2011-00329m_0005.gif'></P>
