The Friedlander reactions of acetylbenzenes and 2-acetylpyridine with 3-aminonaphthalene-2-carbaldehyde afforded the corresponding 2-phenylbenzo[g]quinoline and 2-(pyrid-2-yl)benzo[g]quinoline, respectively. The same reactions of 3-aminonaphthalene-2-carbaldehyde with 1,2-, 1,3-, 1,4-di- and 1,3,5-triacetylbenzenes, however, afforded a series of corresponding (benzo[g]quinolin-2-yl)benzenes as new N,C-bidentate and unexpected benzo[g]quinoline. Crystallinity, thermal properties, absorption and emission spectral properties of the products were studied.

A series of ethanodiazapolycenes were prepared in 87%-89%yields by Friedlander reactions of three o-aminoarenecarbaldehydes with bicycle[2.2.2]octane-2,3-dione and their spectral, therma, and structural properties were studied. Subsequent attempts to convert them to diazapolycenes have proved unsuccessful.

BackgroundFluoranthene (FR) is a common environmental pollutant that exists in a complex mixture with other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). We identified biomarkers for mon-itoring FR exposure and investigated the rescue effect of FR-induced cellular toxicity via aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) antagonist activity in bone marrow derived mesen-chymal stem cells (BM-MSCs).MethodsMorphological changes, viability, and rescue effects of an AHR antagonist (CH223191) were examined in BM-MSCs after exposure to FR. Cytotoxic effects were assayed using the tetrazolium-based colorimetric assay. Apoptosis was measured by annexin V and pro-pidium iodide dye-based flowcytometry assay, mitochondrial membrane potential assay, and nuclear DNA fragmentation assay. Molecular signaling pathways of apoptosis and autophagy were investigated using immunoblotting. Proteomics were performed in or-der to reveal the spectra of cellular damage and identify biomarkers for FR exposure.ResultsExposing BM-MSCs to FR (IC50=50 M) induced cell death and morphological changes, while the AHR antagonist showed rescue effects. Autophagy was activated and mitochon-drial membrane potential was decreased. Proteomic analysis identified 48 deregulated proteins (26 upregulated and 22 downregulated). Among them, annexin A6, pyruvate kinase, UDP-glucose dehydrogenase, and phospholipase A2 could be potential bio-markers for FR exposure.ConclusionThe exposure of BM-MSCs to FR induced remarkable alterations in cellular biology and the proteome, allowing for identification of novel biomarkers for FR exposure. Furthermore, AHR antagonists might be able to prevent cellular damage due to FR exposure.

<P>IEEE Standard 1459 defines the power components based on the fast Fourier series. However, Fourier series assumes the signal is periodic in nature, and provides erroneous assessment of the power components in the presence of transient signals. Therefore, a new method is proposed for the evaluation of the IEEE Standard 1459 power components based on the time-frequency distribution (TFD) and the cross time-frequency distribution (XTFD) of transient signals. The TFD and XTFD preserve simultaneous time and variable frequency information of transient signals, and estimate the instantaneous power components according to IEEE Standard 1459. Results of computer simulated and real-world power quality disturbance case studies justify the effectiveness of the proposed method for the assessment of instantaneous power components under transient conditions.</P>

The neutron total cross-sections of tantalum (181Ta) were measured in the neutron energy region from 0.01 eV to 100 eV by using the time-of-flight method at the Pohang Neutron Facility, which consists of an electron linac, a water-cooled tantalum target with a water moderator, and a 12-mlong time-of-flight path. A 6Li-ZnS(Ag) scintillator with a diameter of 12.5 cm and a thickness of 1.6 cm was used as a neutron detector, and a natural tantalum metal plate, 10 × 10 cm2 in area by 0.45 mm in thickness, was used for the neutron transmission measurement. The background level was determined by using a notch-filter of Co, In, and Cd sheets. The present measurement was compared with the previous ones and the evaluated data in ENDF/B-VI.8. The resonance parameters of 181Ta isotope were obtained from the transmission ratio by using the SAMMY code, which utilizes both Doppler and resolution broadening effects and Bayes’ generalized least squares technique.
