      • Antioxidant activity of Cinchona officinalis stem bark extracts

        Stem bark of Cinchona sp. (Rubiaceae) is one of the well known drugs for its therapeutic values in traditional as well as modern medicine. Even though a lot of work has been carried out on quinoline alkaloids of Cinchona, its phenolic constituents received very little attention. In the present study, we evaluated antioxidant properties of C. officinalis stem bark methanolic extract and water extract containing phenolic compounds (total phenolics 21.37, 5.18% w/w respectively in the two extracts) in different in vitro and ex vivo models viz., antiradical activity by DPPH reduction, superoxide radical scavenging activity in riboflavin/light/NBT system, nitric oxide radical scavenging activity in sodium nitroprusside/Greiss reagent system and inhibition of lipid peroxidation induced by iron-ADP-ascorbate in liver homogenate and haemolysis of erythrocytes induced by phenylhydrazine in erythrocyte membrane stabilization study. Both the extracts exhibited very good antioxidant activity in all the models tested. The phenolic compounds including tannins present in the stem bark seem to offer protection from the oxidative damage.

        A Gold’s Price Forecasting Model

        This study aims to determine the effect of inflation, the Dollar index, world oil prices, the Dow Jones index, and the economic crisis on the price of gold in the derivatives market. The study period is from January 2003 to December 2020. The research finds that the best model used in predicting gold price is Threshold Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (TARCH)(1,2,2) with the lowest Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) value compared to other models and the value of Goodness of Fit highest from 3 other selected models. All independent variables are found to affect the price of gold. The study also found a variant of the gold price determined by the variant as well as the residual price of gold in the previous period. Another interesting finding is that volatility in gold prices has an asymmetric effect on the market. Inflation is statistically significant in weakening the effect of world oil prices on gold prices.

        Thermal tolerance mechanism of invasive cotton mealybug parasitoid, Aenasius arizonensis Girault (Hemiptera: Encyrtidae)

        The sustainability and fitness of biocontrol agents depends on the abiotic factors of which temperature is the most critical factor. Thermal stress affects parasitoid behavior owing to change in physiological activities. So, an experiment was conducted to know the effect of thermal stress on the antioxidant enzymes in Aenasius arizonensis (Girault), a specific parasitoid of cotton mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis (Tinsley). Enzyme activity in P. solenopsis and A. arizonensis at each thermal stress treatment was noticed. At 3 h of thermal stress, the tem perature dependent increase in the SOD activity was observed. The maximum activity was noticed at 41 ◦ C in both P. solenopsis and A. arizonensis compared to the 27 ◦ C. The SOD activity was found more in four hours exposure compared to the three hours exposure at all the temperature treatments. Catalase activity was also found to increase with the increase in temperature, the effect of thermal stress was found to be significant in A. arizonensis and P. solenopsis for the activity of catalase. The maximum GST activity was found at 41 ◦ C for both P. solenopsis nymphs and A. arizonensis adults exposed to different temperature treatments for 3 h of duration. However, all the temperature treatments for P. solenopsis nymphs were non-significant, whereas, for A. arizonensis, it was found significant for the GST activity. We observed that thermal stress had no effect on the concentration of MDA in both P. solenopsis and A. arizonensis subjected to different durations of temperature regimes. Elevated levels of SOD, CAT and GST might be providing possible protection against reactive oxygen species generated under elevated thermal stress.

        Shift-Share Analysis of Tourism Industry Growth in Kulon Progo Yogyakarta

        The purpose of this paper is to examine relevant practices, potentials, and opportunities of tourism industry at Kulon Progo District. Tourism is expected to be a supporter of sustainable economic growth so that various regions will compete to develop local destination and maintain local wisdom. The number of foreign and domestic tourist arrivals to Yogyakarta Province in 2012-2016 were used as the basis for assessing tourism potential. Shift-share was used to analyze the potentiality of tourism sector in Kulon Progo compared with tourism in Yogyakarta, Sleman, Bantul, and Gunung Kidul. Results showed that the tourism sector contributed to the Kulon Progo economy with indicators from actual growth, region mix effect, and competitive effect yield positive value. Regularly local government established the regulation for improving the touristm in Kulon Progo. It is concluded that Kulon Progo tourism sector is capable of being a propulsive and potential industry in future. In order to upgrade the advantage and spesialized the destination, it is indispensable for Kulon Progo to take proper marketing strategies, to encourage local creativities, to cooperate and integrate with other regions. Therefore, stakeholders can use the information as the basis for making decisions related to tourism in Kulon Progo.

        Solution of Eigenvalue Problems for Nonclassically Damped Systems with Multiple Frequencies

The proposed method is obtained by applying the modified Newton-Raphson technique and the orthonormal condition of the eigenvectors to the linear eigenproblem through matrix augmentation of the quadratic eigenvalue problem. In the iteration methods such as the inverse iteration method and the subspace iteration method, sing ularity may be occurred during the factorizing process when the shift value is cJose to an eigenvalue of the system. However, even though the shift val\le is an eigenval\le of the system, the proposed method provides nonsing \llarity, and that is ana]y tically proved‘ 8ince the modified N ewtonRaphson techniq\le is adopted to the proposed method, initial values are need. Beca\lse the Lanczos method et"fectively produces better initial values than other methods, the results of the Lanczos method are taken as the initial γalues of the proposed method. Two numerical examples a.re presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and the res \llts are cornpared with those 01" the well‘• known subspace iteration method and the Lanczos method.

        대학 브랜드 아이덴티티를 고려한 강원대학교 교문 디자인에 관한 연구

        근래 들어 건물이나 조형물의 시각적 이미지가 그 집단이 추구하는 가치를 구성원끼리 공유하게 하며, 외부로 표현하는 의미로 인식되면서 그 중요성이 부각되고 있다. 대학의 교문은 영역의 구분과 출입구의 역할의 기본적 기능을 넘어서 대학의 입구성과 상징성을 표현하는 중요한 디자인 대상이다. 문은 출입을 위한 건물의 기본적 요소라는 의미이외에 건물의 성격과 입구를 상징하는 요소이다. 본 연구에서는 대학의 이미지에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 요소 중에 대학교문의 디자인 요소 및 조형성에 대하여 조사, 분석하여 대학교문의 의미를 고찰하고, 실제 대학 캠퍼스를 대상으로 대학 교문의 디자인을 제시함으로서 교문의 디자인 프로세스와 컨셉 구성의 예를 제시하고자 하였다. 본 연구를 통해 대학교문 설계 시 다음과 같은 디자인 고려사항과 전략이 필요할 것이다. 첫째, 대학교문은 문은 출입이라는 기능적 의미 이외에 입구성, 장소성, 고유성의 특성을 표현해야 한다. 둘째, 대학교문은 유개형과 무개형으로 나눌 수 있는데, 대학교문의 대지의 제약점, 기능적 목적, 조형적 목적에 의해 형태를 결정지어야 한다. 셋째, 대학교문의 디자인 요소는 교문의 형태이외의 문주의 슬롯형태, 문주의 조형성의 변화, 문주의 재료 변화 등이 있다. 대학 교문의 조형성은 단순한 미적 기준만을 충족해서는 안될 것이며, 입구성과 대학의 이념과 지역의 고유성 등의 복합적인 의미를 창출해야한다. 이러한 통찰적인 디자인 요소가 고려된다면, 대학 교문은 대학의 이미지 상승과 시각이미지를 통해 학생들이 대학의 이념을 공유하는 대학 브랜드 아이덴티티의 역할을 수행할 수 있을 것이다. Recently expressing the image of organizations by representative object such as company identity or building skin design has become more generalized and the importance of identity design has increased considerably. A university gate of shall be considered same way. It is not just an entrance or boundary for the campus. It is an important design object that represents the symbolic image of university. That means a university gate needs to meet functional and symbolic requirement also it is a formative element as well as an architectural element. The purpose of this study is to inspect the meaning of University gate by analyzing design factors and formations which influence the campus identity most and to propose a case study of concept design process applied to an actual university gate design. According to this study three design strategy is to be considered for a university gate design. First, visual emphasis of entrance and exit, uniqueness and placeness to be expressed. Second, gate design can be categorized into opening types and column types. Those types depend on the context, function and formativeness. For instance, opening type with four pillars or "h" shape is suitable for separation of pedestrian and vehicle. Third, There are three important design elements for a university gate. patterns of slotted tiles, formativeness and material. A university gate should create multiple meanings such as placeness, locality and campus identity as well as satisfying the aesthetic value. When these design strategies were considered properly a university gate will perform a role of representing the campus that shares the principles of students and university through the visual image of it.

        골반경 수술 184 예에 대한 고찰

        본 병원 산부인과에서 1993년 5월부터 12월가지만 8개월 동안 184에의 골반경수술을 시행한 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻을 수 있었다. 1. 골반경수술의 적응증은 총 184예중 자궁외임신이 80예(43.5%), 난소낭종이 21예(11.4%), 자궁내막증이 17예(9.2%)이었다. 2. 골반경수술의 방법은 총 184예중 난관절제술이 46예(25%), 전기소작술이 21예(11.4%), 난소낭종절제술이 19예(10.3%)이었다. 3. 환자들의 평균연령은 31.4세이었다. 4. 환자들의 평균출산력은 1.25회이었다. 5. 수술시간은 수술의 종류, 난이도에 따라 20분에서 5시간까지 다양했다. To evaluate the efficacy of pelviscopic surgery in gynecologic patient, we have reviewed 184 patietns treated pelviscopically from May 1993 to December 1993. The common indications were ectopic pregnancy (43.5%), ovarian cyst (11.4%), and endometriosis (9.2%) and frequent types of surgery were salpingectomy (25%), electrofulguration(11.4%) and cystectomy(10.3%). Mean age and parity of the patients were 31.4 and 1.25. The most common complication was hemorrhage at the trocar site, but it was controlled without difficulty. In our conclusion, pelviscopic surgery makes minimal postoperative hemorrhage and postoperative discomfort, low complication and short hospital stay. This type of surgery is simple and useful method of treatment in the community hospital.

        프랑스에서 한의학의 보급과 제도화 과정 : 침술의 경우

        The aim of this study is to observe the spread and implementation of acupuncture as an official medical treatment in France. This research is based on the study of the scientific magazine produced by the Association of Acupuncturist Doctors of France from 1945 to 2008 as well as medical and sociological studies. Western medicine was introduced and spread in Korea about one hundred years ago and is the foundation of modern Korean medicine. Nowadays it is more commonly employed than traditional Oriental medicine. Oriental medicine was introduced in France in the 17th century but only acupuncture gained notoriety. The French Faculty of Medicine officially chose to legalize acupuncture after WWII but only allowed doctors to study acupuncture. It takes three years to obtain an Inter-University Degree(DIU) in acupuncture therapy. Why would the Faculty of Medicine make a holistic treatment system official that is in opposition to the systematic treatment method of the Western medicine? The second question posed is, does Western Academia still recognize acupuncture as a viable treatment method? The final question addressed is, has acupuncture any real impact on medical treatment of the French Society?
