Effects of Feeding Rate and Water Temperature on Growth and Body Composition of Juvenile Korean Rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli (Hilgendorf 1880)

        Mizanur, Rahman Md.,Yun, Hyeonho,Moniruzzaman, M.,Ferreira, F.,Kim, Kang-Woong,Bai, Sungchul C. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2014 Animal Bioscience Vol.27 No.5

Three feeding trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of feeding rate and water temperature on growth and body composition of juvenile Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli rearing at 3 different water temperatures. A total of 270 fish (each experiment) individual body weight (BW) averaging $16{\pm}0.3g$ ($mean{\pm}SD$) were fed a commercial diet for 4 wk at $16^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, and $24^{\circ}C$. At each temperature, triplicate tanks were assigned to one of 6 feeding rates: 1.5%, 2.5%, 2.8%, 3.1%, 3.4%, and satiation (3.7% BW/d) at $16^{\circ}C$, 1.9%, 2.9%, 3.2%, 3.5%, 3.8% and satiation (4.1% BW/d) at $20^{\circ}C$ and 1.7%, 2.7%, 3.0%, 3.3%, 3.6%, and satiation (3.9% BW/d) at $24^{\circ}C$ water temperature. Weight gains of fish in satiation and 3.4% groups at $16^{\circ}C$, in satiation and 3.8% groups at $20^{\circ}C$ and in satiation and 3.6% groups at $24^{\circ}C$ were significantly higher than those of fish in the other treatments (p<0.05). A broken line regression analysis of weight gain indicated that optimum feeding rates of juvenile Korean rockfish were 3.41% at $16^{\circ}C$, 3.75% at $20^{\circ}C$ and 3.34% at $24^{\circ}C$ water temperature. Results of the present study indicate that the optimum feeding rate could be >3.1% but <3.41% at $16^{\circ}C$, >3.5% but <3.75% at $20^{\circ}C$ and >3.0% but <3.34% at $24^{\circ}C$. As we expected results suggest that fish performed better at $20^{\circ}C$ than $16^{\circ}C$ or $24^{\circ}C$ water temperature and the optimum feeding rate could be 3.1% BW/d to 3.7% BW/d in 16 g of juvenile Korean rockfish.

Identification of differentially expressed genes in gauze-exposed omentum of dogs using differential display RT-PCR

        Mizanur Rahman,김용선,변예은,류학현,김완희,Mahmuda Umme Rayhan,권오경 대한수의학회 2013 JOURNAL OF VETERINARY SCIENCE Vol.14 No.2

Molecular mechanisms governing peritonitis caused by the presence of aseptic gauze have remained unclear. To identify the genes involved, sterile gauze-exposed omentum was collected at 0, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h intervals, and analyzed by differential display RT(reverse transcription)-PCR. Among over 1,200 bands, 230 bands were found differentially expressed. These bands represented the fragment sizes of approximately 200 to 1,500 bp. The eight fragments were expressed differentially in the treatment group but not in the control. The sequences of two bands were similar to those of genes associated with the inflammatory process and a band was related to repair and regeneration process. Another one was related with spermatogonia and the rest four were unknown. Additionally, amplicons corresponding to the full-length sequences of two inflammatory gene fragments were synthesized by rapid amplification of cDNA end PCR. One showed 99% similarity to the major histocompatibility complex class II dog leukocyte antigen-DR beta chain and the other was canis familiaris proteasome beta type 3. Results of the present study suggested that sterile gauze induced the differential expression of genes in the omentum involved in inflammation and healing process.

Towards Sustainability of Tropical Forests: Implications for Enhanced Carbon Stock and Climate Change Mitigation

Mizanur Rahman,Mahmuda Islam,Rofiqul Islam,Norul Alam Sobuj 강원대학교 산림과학연구소 2017 Journal of Forest Science Vol.33 No.4

Tropical forests constitute almost half of the global forest cover, account for 35% of the global net primary productivity and thereby have potential to contribute substantially to sequester atmospheric CO2 and offset climate change impact. However, deforestation and degradation lead by unsustainable management of tropical forests contribute to the unprecedented species losses and limit ecosystem services including carbon sequestration. Sustainable forest management (SFM) in the tropics may tackle and rectify such deleterious impacts of anthropogenic disturbances and climatic changes. However, the existing dilemma on the definition of SFM and lack of understanding of how tropical forest sustainability can be achieved lead to increasing debate on whether climate change mitigation initiatives would be successful. We reviewed the available literature with a view to clarify the concept of sustainability and provide with a framework towards the sustainability of tropical forests for enhanced carbon stock and climate change mitigation. We argue that along with securing forest tenure and thereby reducing deforestation, application of reduced impact logging (RIL) and appropriate silvicultural system can enhance tropical forest carbon stock and help mitigate climate change.

Evaluation of Pheromone Trap Settings for Managing Brinjal Shoot and Fruit Borer (Leucinodes orbonalis) in Brinjal

        Mizanur Rahman,Razzab Ali,Mohammad Saiful Islam,Myeong-Hyeon Wang 한국자원식물학회 2009 한국자원식물학회지 Vol.22 No.3

An experiment was conducted to find out among 9 trap settings the most appropriate site for trap placement in the Brinjal field based on Brinjal shoot and fruit borer trapping efficiency, shoot and fruit infestation, healthy and total fruit yield, and BCR. The efficiency of different trap setting positions varied significantly. Trapping efficiency observed the T1 ensured the minimum shoot and fruit infestation 10.02% and 20.95%, respectively, minimum infested fruit yield (4.75 ton/ha), maximum healthy and total fruit yield (26.72 and 31.47 ton/ha) and the maximum BCR (1.70), which was followed by T2 and T4. The minimum trapping efficiency of T9 treatment led the maximum shoot and fruit infestation 13.89 and 29.26%, respectively, maximum infested fruit yield (7.59 ton/ha), minimum healthy and total fruit yield (17.74 and 25.32 ton/ha) and the minimum BCR (1.00). A correlation between the number of BSFB adults trapped from the most efficient trap setting and the shoot and fruit infestation recorded and found a linear positive correlation between number of BSFB adults trapped and shoot infestation (r = 0.781) and fruit infestation (r = 0.810). The effect of pheromone trap positions observed in this study may be attributed to the easy accessibility of the lures and traps, when they are placed at the canopy.

The Optimum Feeding Frequency in Growing Korean Rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli) Rearing at the Temperature of 15℃ and 19℃

Mizanur, Rahman Md.,Bai, Sungchul C. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2014 Animal Bioscience Vol.27 No.9

Two feeding trials were conducted to determine the optimum feeding frequency in growing Korean rockfish, (Sebastes schlegeli) reared at the temperatures of $15^{\circ}C$ and $19^{\circ}C$. Fish averaging $92.2{\pm}0.7$ g (mean${\pm}$standard deviation [SD]) at $15.0{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ and $100.2{\pm}0.4g$ ($mean{\pm}SD$) at $19.0{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ water temperature were randomly distributed into each of 15 indoor tanks containing 250-L sea water from a semi-recirculation system. A total of five feeding frequency groups were set up in three replicates as follows: one meal in a day at 08:00 hour, two meals a day at 08:00 and 17:00 hours, three meals a day at 08:00, 14:00, and 20:00 hours, four meals a day at 08:00, 12:00, 16:00, and 20:00 hours, and one meal every 2 days at 08:00 hour. Fish were fed at the rate of 1.2% body weight (BW)/d at $15^{\circ}C$ and 1.5% BW/d at $19^{\circ}C$. At the end of 8 wks of feeding trial weight gain and specific growth rate were significantly higher at the fish fed groups of one meal a day and two meals a day at $15^{\circ}C$ and fish fed groups of 1 meal every 2 days at $19^{\circ}C$ were significantly lower than those of all other fish fed groups. Glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase and glutamic pyruvic transaminase of fish fed group at 1 meal every 2 days was significantly higher than those of all other fish fed groups in both experiments. Weight gain, specific growth rate and condition factor were gradually decreased as the feeding frequency increased. The results indicate that growing Korean rockfish 92 and 100 g perform better at $15^{\circ}C$ than $19^{\circ}C$ water temperature. As we expected, current results have indicated that a feeding frequency of 1 meal a day is optimal for the improvement of weight gain in growing Korean rockfish grown from 92 g to 133 g at $15^{\circ}C$ and 100 g to 132 g at $19^{\circ}C$ water temperature.

A Review of the Optimum Feeding Rates and Feeding Frequency in Korean Rockfish Sebastes schlegeli Reared at Seven Different Water Temperatures

Mizanur, Rahman M.,Bai, Sungchul C. The Korean Society of Fisheries and Aquatic Scienc 2014 Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Vol.17 No.2

Seven feeding trials were conducted to determine the effects of feeding rate and frequency in the Korean rockfish Sebastes schlegeli at seven different water temperatures. Two feeding-rate experiments for 5-g Korean rockfish at $17^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$; three feeding rate experiments for 16-g Korean rockfish at $16^{\circ}C$ and $24^{\circ}C$; and finally, two feeding frequency experiments for 93- and 100-g at $15^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$ were conducted. Twenty fish averaging $5.5{\pm}0.2$ g ($mean{\pm}SD$) were randomly distributed into 18 indoor tanks containing 40-L seawater from a semi-recirculation system. Fish were fed a commercial diet for 4 weeks at water temperatures of $17^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$. Two feeding trials were conducted to determine the optimum feeding frequency in growing Korean rockfish reared at temperatures of $15^{\circ}C$ and $19^{\circ}C$. Broken line regression analysis of weight gain (WG) indicated that the optimum feeding rates of 5-g growing Korean rockfish were 4.48% (BW/day; BW, body weight) at $17^{\circ}C$ and 4.83% (BW/day) at $20^{\circ}C$. Broken line regression analysis of WG showed optimum feeding rates of 16-g juvenile Korean rockfish of 3.41% (BW/day) at $16^{\circ}C$, 3.75% (BW/day) at $20^{\circ}C$, and 3.34% (BW/day) at $24^{\circ}C$. The biological performance, results, along with morphological indices and serological characteristics, suggest that a feeding frequency of 1 meal/day was optimal to improve WG in growing Korean rockfish grown from 93 to 133 g at a water temperature of $15^{\circ}C$, and 100 to 132 g at $19^{\circ}C$.

A Study on Non Destructive Evaluation of the Steam Turbine L-0 Blades

        Mizanur, Rahman Md.,Rezk, Osama,Ouma, Victor Otieno,Vaysidin, Saidov,Gomaa, M. Abdullatif,Jung, JaeCheon,Lee, YongKwan The Korean Society of Systems Engineering 2016 시스템엔지니어링학술지 Vol.12 No.1

The Nuclear and Fossil Steam Turbines record a considerable number of failures annually. Some of these failures reported are as result of blade failure. The failure of the L-0 blade in a Steam Turbine is one of the most reported blade failure in Nuclear and Fossil steam turbines. This paper seeks to identify the best Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) method or methods to be used in the steam turbine L-0 blades inspection process. The development of systems engineering processes presents an opportunity to apply NDE inspection to the L-0 blades. This process apply computer modelling of the L-0 using ANSYS and by simulating the stresses experienced by the L-0 blade during operation it is possible to identify the most susceptible areas for crack formation and growth. The results from these models compared to industry data for validation. The analysis of these results used to predict the most probable failure location and failure modes. Therefore NDE inspection can be applied to these areas with greater degree of accuracy. This would be beneficial in the increasing the accuracy in the detection of cracks and hence save inspection time and the overall inspection cost. Furthermore, not only the location for crack formation and NDE inspection determined but also best the NDE inspection technique/techniques to be applied appropriately on the L-0 blade are prescribed.

Effect of functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes on weather degradation and corrosion of waterborne polyurethane coatings

Mohammad Mizanur Rahman,Rami Suleiman,김한도 한국화학공학회 2017 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.34 No.9

A series of waterborne polyurethane/functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotube (WBPU/f-MWCNT) nanocomposite dispersions was prepared using three defined concentrations of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 wt% carboxyl functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (f-MWCNTs). All dispersions were coated on mild steel and exposed under natural weather condition for a maximum of 365 days. Both exposed and unexposed coatings were characterized by potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. The pristine WBPU coating showed slight degradation and corrosion protection. Inclusion of a higher content of f-MWCNTs significantly improved both the degradation and corrosion protection efficiencies of the coatings. Maximal degradation and corrosion protection was observed when 2.0 wt% f-MWCNT was mixed with WBPU for all of the coatings.

      • Myocardial Calcification and Hypertension following Chronic Renal Failure and Ameliorative Effects of Furosemide and Captopril

        Rahman, Mizanur,Kim, Shang-Jin,Kim, Jin-Shang,Kim, Sung-Zoo,Lee, Young-Up,Kang, Hyung-Sub S. Karger AG 2010 Cardiology Vol.116 No.3

<P><I>Objectives:</I> The aim of this study was to prevent metastatic myocardial calcification and hypertension following chronic renal failure (CRF). <I>Methods:</I> A total of 50 male Sprague-Dawley rats were allocated to one of five groups: the control group (sham), the NxNT group (nephrectomized rats receiving no treatment), the NxFuro group (nephrectomized rats treated with furosemide), the NxCap group (nephrectomized rats treated with captopril) and the NxFuroCap group (nephrectomized rats treated with furosemide and captopril). Surgery (5/6 nephrectomy) was performed to induce CRF. Oral treatment with furosemide (20 mg/kg) and/or captopril (0.05 mg/kg) was given twice daily for 5 weeks. Parameters were studied after 5 weeks. <I>Results:</I> In the NxNT group, arterial blood pressure was significantly increased compared with the controls. Monotherapy with furosemide or captopril and both in combination maintained blood pressure to near or below control. Myocardial and remnant-kidney calcification was detected in NxNT rats, but calcification was absent in the NxFuroCap rats. Cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis was observed in the NxNT group but not in treatment groups. Both plasma inorganic phosphate and Ca2+ significantly increased in the NxNT group, but the difference was not significant in the treatment groups. <I>Conclusion:</I> Furosemide, either alone or in combination with captopril, is capable to prevent myocardial calcification, cardiac hypertrophy and hypertension, maintaining blood Ca2+ and phosphate levels by slowing CRF.</P><P>Copyright © 2010 S.
