Effect of Batch Melting Temperature and Raw Material on Iron Redox State in Sodium Silicate Glasses

Mirhadi, Bahman,Mehdikhani, Behzad The Korean Ceramic Society 2011 한국세라믹학회지 Vol.48 No.2

In this study, the redox state of iron in sodium silicate glasses was varied by changing the melting conditions, such as the melting temperature and particle size of iron oxide. The oxidation states of the iron ion were determined by wet chemical analysis and UV-Vis spectroscopy methods. Iron commonly exists as an equilibrium mixture of ferrous ions, $Fe^{2+}$, and ferric ions $Fe^{3+}$. In this study, sodium silicate glasses containing nanoparticles of iron oxide (0.5% mol) were prepared at various temperatures. Increase of temperature led to the transformation of ferric ions to ferrous ions, and the intensity of the ferrous peak in 1050 nm increased. Nanoparticle iron oxide caused fewer ferrous ions to be formed and the $\frac{Fe^{2+}}{Fe^{3+}}$ equilibrium ratio compared to that with micro-oxide iron powder was lower.

Effect of Al2O3 on Crystallization Behavior and Microstructure of Na2O-CaO-P2O5-SiO2 Glass-ceramic System

Mirhadi, Bahman,Mehdikhani, Behzad The Korean Ceramic Society 2012 한국세라믹학회지 Vol.49 No.2

The effects of $Al_2O_3$ on the crystallization behavior of glass compositions in the $Na_2O$-CaO-$SiO_2$ system were investigated by differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effect of $Al_2O_3$ content on the mechanical properties, density, phase formation, and microstructures of $Na_2O$-CaO-$P_2O_5$-$SiO_2$ glass ceramics were studied. The thermal parameters of each glass were studied by DTA. The density of the glass ceramic samples was measured by Archimedes' method. It was found that the glass-ceramic containing 2.0 molar percent $Al_2O_3$ had desirable sintering behavior and reached an acceptable density. Phase investigation and micro-structural analysis were performed by XRD and SEM, respectively.

An updated review on therapeutic effects of nanoparticle-based formulations of saffron components (safranal, crocin, and crocetin)

        Elaheh Mirhadi,Hooriyeh Nassirli,Bizhan Malaekeh‑Nikouei 한국약제학회 2020 Journal of Pharmaceutical Investigation Vol.50 No.1

In recent years, nanotechnology has come to help researchers a lot in different fields. Especially in medicine and drug delivery, it presents new methods and technologies to increment levels of drug delivery to tumors and decrement side effects of drugs and molecules. Saffron, the dried stigma of the flower of the Crocus sativus plant, is one of the most widely used types of spice with many therapeutic applications that are related to its components: crocin, crocetin, and safranal. Saffron has been used as antispasmodic, anticatarrhal, eupeptic, nerve sedative, gingival sedative, diaphoretic, expectorant, carminative, stomachic, stimulant, emmenagogue, and aphrodisiac for years and now it has been made clear that it could have antioxidant, antidepressant, and anti-cancer activity. This review discusses how nanotechnology could help improve saffron’s pharmaceutical effects and makes it more functional in treatment.

Antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity of Ferula gummosa plant essential oil compared to NaOCl and CHX: a preliminary in vitro study

        Abbaszadegan, Abbas,Gholami, Ahmad,Mirhadi, Hosein,Saliminasab, Mina,Kazemi, Aboozar,Moein, Mahmood Reza The Korean Academy of Conservative Dentistry 2015 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.40 No.1

Objectives: The usage of medicinal plants as natural antimicrobial agents has grown in many fields including dental medicine. The aim of this in vitro study was three-fold: (i) to determine the chemical compositions of the Ferula gummosa essential oil (FGEO), (ii) to compare the antimicrobial efficacy of the oil with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and chlorhexidine (CHX), (iii) to assess the toxic behavior of FGEO in different concentrations compared to 5% NaOCl and 0.2% CHX. Materials and Methods: Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was used to determine the chemical compositions of the oil. The disk diffusion method and a broth micro-dilution susceptibility assay were exploited to assess the antimicrobial efficacy against Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mitis, and Candida albicans. The cytocompatibility of the FGEO was assessed on L929 fibroblasts, and compared to that of NaOCl and CHX. Results: Twenty-seven constituents were recognized in FGEO. The major component of the oil was ${\beta}$-pinene (51.83%). All three irrigants significantly inhibited the growth of all examined microorganisms compared to the negative control group. FGEO at $50{\mu}g/mL$ was effective in lower concentration against Enterococcus faecalis than 5% NaOCl and 0.2% CHX, and was also more potent than 0.2% CHX against Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus. FGEO was a cytocompatible solution, and had significantly lower toxicity compared to 5% NaOCl and 0.2% CHX. Conclusions: FGEO showed a promising biological potency as a root canal disinfectant. More investigations are required on the effectiveness of this oil on intracanal bacterial biofilms.

      • Risk Factors for Post-ERCP Cholangitis in Patients with Pancreatic Cancer from a Single Referral Center in Iran

Salehimarzijarani, Babak,Dadvar, Zohreh,Mousavi, Mirhadi,Mirsattari, Dariush,Zali, Mohammad Reza,Alizadeh, Amir Houshang Mohammad Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.4

Cholangitis is relatively uncommon but associated mortality is high due to the predisposition in people with underlying disease. For this recognition of contributing risk factors is necessary. Therefore, the present descriptive-analytical cross-sectional survey was designed to determine contributing risk factors for post-ERCP cholangitis in patients with pancreatic cancer. From 2005 to 2010, 110 consecutive cases of pancreatic cancer attending to a tertiary referral centre (Taleghani Hospital), Tehran, Iran were recruited. The patients all underwent stenting via endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). On univariate analysis, a metallic stent type (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.025-11.34, P=0.037), having no jaundice (1.44-2.22, P=0.009), having no pain (1.32-1.91, P=0.026), a history of prior ERCP (1.16-10.37, P=0.020), and having a proximal biliary stone (1.002-5.93, P=0.046) were related to cholangitis. However on multivariate analysis, none of these factors were found to be contributing risk factors. Cholangitis is avoidable with adequate biliary drainage. Because success rates are higher and complication rates lower for endoscopists performing large volumes of ERCP, performance of the procedure should be concentrated as much as possible in institutions with endoscopists having adequate experience. Patients with a high risk for complications may be best served by referral to an advanced center.
