The Post-Tiananmen Human Rights Issue in China–Australia Relations
Hou Minyue 서울대학교행정대학원 2007 Asian Journal of Political Science Vol.15 No.3
The Tiananmen events of June 1989 shattered the dream of a special relationshipbetween China and Australia, making human rights one of the major issues to beaddressed in their bilateral relations. Though differences emerged, they still neededmanageable and constructive linkages because both of them were fully aware thatconfrontation could damage their common interests in economic prosperity andregional peace and stability. Consequently, the engagement in human rights was themutual demand and pursuit between Beijing and Canberra. By means of engagement,Canberra expected that with the growth of China’s economy and reform this moderateapproach would bring about to China better conditions for more progress in humanrights, though it might be at a slow speed. In the process of China’s post-Tiananmenevolutionary human rights diplomacy changes, Australia was one of the countries to bewon over by China in facilitating its policy implementation. Admittedly, China’sbilateral dialogue approach and technical cooperation with Australia and some otherWestern countries contributed to the successive failure of the American attempt to takemultilateral actions to pass an anti-China resolution in the UN Human RightsCommission (replaced by the UN Human Rights Council in March 2006). Meanwhile,China had to take such steps as responding to concerns on rights issues raised by itsdialogue partners and accepting and implementing UN human rights instruments tomaintain the engagement approach. Resultantly, the process of China’s engagementwith Australia and other Western states in human rights is also a process of itslearning how to deal with Western pressure constructively and how to improve humanrights at home.

The effect of addition of the probiotic Bifidobacterium longum KACC 91563 on the chemical and sensory properties of Kwark cheese produced using CHN-11 as a cheese starter were investigated. The addition of B. longum KACC 91563 to Kwark cheese did not change the composition or pH value of the cheese, compared with control. B. longum KACC 91563 survived at a level of 7.58 Log CFU/g and did not have any negative effect on survival of the cheese starter. A sensory panel commented that the addition of B. longum KACC 91563 made Kwark cheese more desirable to consumers, and that the probiotic supplementation had no effect on perceived taste. Thus, B. longum KACC 91563 can be used for inclusion of probiotic bacteria in cheese.

Minyu Song,Bohyun Yun,Jae Hak Moon,Dong June Park,Kwangsei Lim,Sejong Oh 한국축산식품학회 2015 한국축산식품학회지 Vol.35 No.4
The aim of this study was to evaluate the functional properties of lactic acid bacteria from various sources and to identify strains for use as probiotics. Ten Lactobacillus strains were selected and their properties such as bile tolerance, acid resistance, cholesterol assimilation activity, and adherence to HT-29 cells were assessed to determine their potential as probiotics. Lactobacillus sp. JNU 8829, L. casei MB3, L. sakei MA9, L. sakei CH8, and L. acidophilus M23 were found to show full tolerance to the 0.3% bile acid. All strains without L. acidophilus M23 were the most acid-tolerant strains. After incubating the strains at pH 2.5 for 2 h, their viability decreased by 3 Log cells. Some strains survived at pH 2.5 in the presence of pepsin and 0.3% bile acid. Lactobacillus sp. JNU 8829, L. acidophilus KU41, L. acidophilus M23, L. fermentum NS2, L. plantarum M13, and L. plantarum NS3 were found to reduce cholesterol levels by >50% in vitro. In the adhesion assay, Lactobacillus sp. JNU 8829, L. casei MB3, L. sakei MA9, and L. sakei CH8 showed higher adhesion activities after 2 h of co-incubation with the intestinal cells. The results of this comprehensive analysis shows that this new probiotic strain named, Lactobacillus sp. JNU 8829 could be a promising candidate for dairy products.

Abstract

It is of great significance in high-temperature aeroengine applications for large-surface-area TiAl laminate composites to be fabricated into Ti-Al3Ti parts by plastic forming and subsequent vacuum hot pressing. Then the original layer thicknesses have an important influence on the interface bonding and mechanical properties of TiAl laminate composites, but only few reports about it have been published so far. In the present study, vacuum hot pressing was employed to fabricate TiAl laminate composites using Ti and Al foils of different thickness. The resulting interface bond and mechanical properties of TiAl laminate composites were then studied to determine the optimum sheet configuration and thickness. To further assess their formability and develop a forming limit diagram (FLD), 0.1/0.15 TiAl laminate composites were operated on bending and forming tests to provide guidance for subsequent plastic forming of complex geometries. The results indicated that hot pressed laminates composed of alternating 0.1 (Al) and 0.15 (Ti) mm thick sheets exhibited enhanced superior interface bonding and mechanical properties compared with 0.2/0.25 and 0.4/0.4 sheets. The 0.1/0.15 TiAl laminate composites had excellent bending characteristics and reasonable formability. Fabrication of a drawn cup further confirms the potential for hot pressed TiAl laminate composites to be fabricated into complex shapes.

Highlights

The large-surface-area TiAl laminate composites were prepared by vacuum hot pressing.

The effect of original layer thicknesses on the interface bonding and mechanical properties was investigated.

Bending and forming tests proved the excellent bending characteristics and reasonable formability

Fabrication of a drawn cup further confirmed the potential for complex shapes.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

The intestinal microbiota has increasingly been shown to have a vital role in various aspects of human health. Among the vast gut bacterial community, Bifidobacterium is a genus which dominates the intestine of healthy breast-fed infants whereas in adulthood the levels are lower but relatively stable. Evidence is increasingly accumulating which shows beneficial effects of supplementation with Bifidobacteria for the improvement of human health conditions ranging from protection against infection to various positive effects. However, Bifidobacterium has not been actively studied while consumption of probiotics has greatly been increased as functional foods in Korea. The aim of this article is to introduce various studies and excellent reviews on the role of Bifidobacteria for human health.

To gain insight on cheese consumption and develop strategies for the cheese industry, we conducted a survey of 742 women (age 25 or older) who were responsible for purchasing food for their families. Of them, 49.5% consumed cheese more than once a week and 25.1% expected that the cheese consumption of their families would increase, whereas only 7.1% expected a decrease in consumption. The most important considerations for purchasing cheese were taste and price. Of the respondents, 40.6% purchased domestic cheese, whereas 49.1% were unconcerned about the country of origin. Of them, 20.6% had experience of purchasing farm-made cheese, and 62.7% of them were satisfied with the cheese. These results suggest that cheese consumption will increase in the future, and that with attention to quality improvement and advertising, domestic farm-made cheese consumption could increase accordingly.

Objective: We have tested our hypothesis that inclusion of purified glycerol as a replacer of portions of dried distillers grain with solubles (DDGS) would affect growth performance, rumen fermentation and blood parameters, carcass and sensory traits, reducing sugar and glycogen contents, and volatile compound profiles in longissimus thoracis (LT) in Korean cattle steers. Methods: A total of 20 Korean cattle steers (27.0±0.2 months old; 647±10.5 kg body weight [BW]) were assigned to a conventional control group or a glycerol group (3.17% purified glycerol addition as a replacement for DDGS and molasses). The steers were individually allowed to receive the experimental concentrate at the daily amount of 1.5% of their individual BW and a total 1.0 of kg/d of rice straw twice daily. The feeding trial was conducted for a period of 20 weeks. Results: Glycerol supplementation (GS) increased (p = 0.001) concentrate intake. However, GS did not affect (p>0.05) average daily gain, feed efficiency, and ruminal volatile fatty acid concentrations. GS tended to increase (p≤0.10) serum glucose concentrations at the 16th and 20th weeks. GS decreased (p = 0.001) LT pH. GS did not affect (p>0.05) carcass traits and the chemical or physicochemical compositions, reducing sugar or glycogen contents, sensory traits, and most of volatile compounds in the LT. Conclusion: The inclusion of purified glycerol as a replacement for DDGS in the finishing diet did not affect growth performance, rumen fermentation parameters, and carcass quality in Korean cattle. The purified glycerol could be used as a substitute for other energy sources such as DDGS in beef cattle, depending on the price.
