Dynamic and static properties of sandwich-like graphene-reinforced composite plate
Min Sun,Wen-xing Lu,Minghui Yao,Jianen Chen 대한기계학회 2023 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.37 No.6
A graphene-reinforced composite plate (GRCP) with a sandwich-like structure is proposed. The nonlinear mechanical characteristics of the sandwich-like GRCP are investigated and compared to those of functionally graded and uniform GRCPs. The modified HalpinTsai model is employed to estimate the material parameters, and the Hamilton principle is used to derive the governing equation for the composite plates. The effects of the graphene nanoplatelet (GPL) distribution patterns, weight fraction, and the number of layers on the static and dynamic nonlinear responses of the plates are investigated. The results show that the various GPL distribution patterns have different enhancement effects on plates. Compared with the graded and uniform distribution patterns, the sandwich-like distribution pattern has significant advantages in terms of anti-vibration and anti-bending properties. Furthermore, it is found that the stresses of the sandwich-like GRCPs are discontinuous, there exist stress mutation phenomena between the surface layers and the pure matrix layer.

A method for screening nephroprotective compoundsin cortex Moutan, a common traditional Chinesemedicine (TCM) in treating diabetic nephropathy with renalmesangial cell extraction and ultra performance liquidchromatography technique was described in this paper. Wehypothesize that the compounds which bind to cell membranesunder pathological conditions may be the bioactivecompounds in TCMs. Mesangial cells were cultured inmedium containing 5 mM (physiological, NG) or 30 mM(pathological, HG) glucose for 48 h and then incubated withcortex Moutan extract. After the unbound substances werewashed off, the cell membrane-bound compounds weredissociated and concentrated by an SPE column. By comparingthe chromatograms of NG and HG cultured-cellextractions and cortex Moutan extract, three compoundsbound to both NG and HG-cultured mesangial cells wereidentified as paeoniflorin, pentagalloylglucose (PGG) andpaeonol. In vitro studies showed that paeoniflorin, PGG andpaeonol reduced the activity of nicotinamide-adenine dinucleotidephosphate oxidase (NADPH) activity, anddecreased the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS),transforming growth factor-b1 (TGF-b1) and fibronectin inhigh glucose cultured mesangial cells. The results indicatethat paeonol, paeoniflorin and PGG may be the nephroprotectivecompounds from cortex Moutan. This study isexpected to provide a more reliable and effective method forscreening bioactive compounds from the complex TCM systems.

Purpose: Long-term safety of pregnancy after breast cancer (BC) remains controversial, especially with respect to BC biological subtypes. Methods: We analyzed a population-based retrospective cohort with BC from 2002 to 2017. Patient-level 1:1 matching was performed between pregnant and nonpregnant women. The study population was categorized into 6 biological subtypes based on the combination of prescribed therapies. Subanalyses were performed considering the time to pregnancy after BC diagnosis, systemic therapy, and pregnancy outcomes. Results: We identified 544 matched women with BC, who were assigned to the pregnant (cases, n = 272) or nonpregnant group (controls, n = 272) of similar characteristics, adjusted for guaranteed bias. These patients were followed up for 10 years, or disease and mortality occurrence after the diagnosis of BC. Survival estimates were calculated. The actuarial 10- year overall survival (OS) rates were 97.4% and 91.9% for pregnant and nonpregnant patients, respectively. The pregnant group showed significantly better OS (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 0.29; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.12–0.68; P = 0.005) and did not have a significantly inferior disease-free survival (aHR, 1.10; 95% CI, 0.61–1.99; P = 0.760). Conclusion: Consistent outcomes were observed in every subgroup analysis. Our observational data provides reassuring evidence on the long-term safety of pregnancy in young patients with BC regardless of the BC biological subtype.

Animals use camouflage abilities to escape from predators as a survival tactic, likewise, it is critical for people to use effective camouflage strategies in combat situations. Advances in technology have increased demand for adaptive camouflage of military uniforms making it paramount to find the optimal adaptive camouflage pattern for various environments. Previous studies examined effectiveness of color-combinations for camouflage patterns according to various environmental contexts. In this study, researchers aim to identify the optimal camouflage patterns and the exclusion of properties of the colors. Camouflage pattern combination strategies used in this experiment were generated by manipulating the size (small vs. medium vs. large) and contrast (high vs. middle vs. low). We performed the visual search tasks using photo-simulation to evaluate the effectiveness of camouflage strategies. Each stimulus of pattern strategy was presented in three environmental contexts (Woodland vs. Rural vs. Urban) and performance (error rate) was measured. As a result, the pattern composed of middle level of contrast and medium size appeared to be more effective than the others in the Urban context. In the Woodland context, low contrast and small size of patterns were superior to the others. In Rural conditions, strategies with middle contrast and large size were better than the other strategies. This study aims to lay the foundation for optimal adaptive camouflage patterns in different environmental contexts and provide a theoretical basis for future military uniforms.

Biocidal products are used for multiple kinds of purposes in home environments. Biocidal active substances are used for personal hygiene, surface disinfection, pest control, and chemical preservation. Despite the wide domestic consumption of repellents for pest control, little is known about exposure and risk in home environments. Empenthrin and naphthalene are commonly used in repellents and insecticides, which are mostly cassette types placed in wardrobes or urinals. In this study, authority reports such as EU-BPR Assessment US-EPA RED reports were reviewed and multi-route exposure and risk assessments were conducted for the consumption of repellents containing empenthrin and naphthalene among biocidal products. Exposure assessments were conducted for infants, children, and adults, assuming exposure to the products during installation and through indoor occupants after installation. Exposure factors and algorithms were considered as mentioned in the legal notices of the Chemical Product Safety Act of Korea and Korean Exposure Factors Handbook for Children. Exposures by multi-pathways(dermal, inhalation, and oral routes) were estimated, the hazard of the active components was conducted, and risk assessment with products’ actual content was evaluated.
