        Preparation of polymer-bound palladium catalyst and its application to the reduction of nitro arenes and the hydrodehalogenation of aryl halides

        Polymer-bound palladium catalyst was prepared as PdO nanoparticles bound on the surface of polystyrene beads. This catalytic system showed good activities in the reduction of nitro arenes and the hydrodehalogenation of aryl halides. When the nitro arenes were reacted with 10 mol% PdO and K<SUB>3</SUB>PO<SUB>4</SUB> (1.5 equiv.) in DMF/cyclohexanol at 110 <SUP>o</SUP>C, the corresponding amino arenes were formed in good yields. In addition, these reaction conditions afforded hydrodehalogenated products from aryl iodides, bromides, and chlorides.

        The sustainability risk of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, due to saltwater intrusion

        Groundwater is important for domestic, industrial, and agricultural uses in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. As the city has developed in a coastal environment, the issue of the fresh water supply must be solved for continuous development. The aim of this study was to quantitatively estimate the risk of groundwater salinization in the Ho Chi Minh area due to saline water intrusion into the main coastal aquifer (the Upper Pliocene aquifer) based on field monitoring data, and to evaluate the sustainability of the city with respect to groundwater resources. From the national monitoring database, water level data were obtained for the last 10 years (2000 to 2009), and a total of 33 hydrogeochemical and isotope data sets were obtained from the aquifer. The sustainability of Ho Chi Minh City with respect to the groundwater supply was quantitatively evaluated at an aquifer scale using groundwater sustainability indicators (GWSIs) suggested by the UNESCO/IAEA/IAH Working Group. The results indicated that groundwater in the southern region, part of the western region, and the area along the Saigon riverside was of poor quality, with very high total dissolved solids (>1,000 mg/L) and high concentrations of Cl and Fe, exceeding the World Health Organization’s drinking water guidelines. The Br:Cl ratios and the δ2H and δ18O values of the samples indicated that the salinization of groundwater resulted mainly from mixing with seawater over a long period. During 2004–2009, the saline boundary moved inland, with the farthest distance reaching ~3.2 km. The long-term abstraction of groundwater, which has been much greater than its recharge capability, is probably causing the decline in water level (in 39% of the aquifer area), the degradation of groundwater quality (in 62% of the area), and the continuously expanding saline water intrusion (by 7.4% in 5 years). Thus, for the sustainable development of Ho Chi Minh City, in addition to passive measures to regulate over-pumping and pollution controls, active measures should be considered to prevent further seawater intrusion and to increase groundwater recharge through artificial recharge or better management of aquifer recharge (MAR).

      • A Novel Injectable pH–Temperature Sensitive Hydrogel Containing Chitosan–Insulin Electrosprayed Nanosphere Composite for an Insulin Delivery System in Type I Diabetes Treatment

Insulin drug was loading in chitoshan nanospheres using electrospraying method, a pH- and temperature-sensitive biodegradable hydrogel, which is an oligomer serine-poly(lactide)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly (lactide)-oligomer serine (OS-PLA-PEG-PLA-OS) pentablock copolymer was used as a matrix to containing chitosan–insulin electro sprayed nanospheres (CIN). The properties of the OS-PLA-PEG-PLA-OS pentablock copolymer and the chitosan–insulin nanoparticles such as sol-gel transition, degradation in vitro and in vivo were characterized. The results showed that the chitosan–insulin nanospheres uniformly distributed in the matrix had a reinforcing effect on the mechanical properties and prolonged the degradation time of the hydrogel depot under body conditions. In addition, the cytotoxicity experiment results indicate that the composite could be used as a biomaterial for drug delivery system. The composite solutions accommodating different concentrations of the chitosan–insulin nanospheres were subcutaneously injected into induced diabetic BALB/c mice to study the in vivo insulin-release profile. The result showed that insulin concentrations in blood plasma were maintained at a steady-state level. Furthermore, the bio-properties of the insulin were retained and it showed a blood glucose level reducing effect for more than 60 hours after injection to a streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mouse model. The results suggested that this injectable pH–temperature sensitive hydrogel containing chitosan– insulin electro sprayed nanosphere composites has promising potential applications for type 1 diabetes treatment.

        The Hedonic Method in Evaluating Apartment Price: A Case of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

        The study examines factors affecting apartment prices in the real estate market of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The study uses primary data based on surveys of customers who have traded successfully, and collects transaction data from real estate trading companies that are the top investors in Ho Chi Minh City real estate market. The collected data include 384 observations in a total of 24 districts, detailing that each district surveyed on a minimum of four projects, each project carried out a survey on a minimum of four apartments. The survey collected 339 valid questionnaires for analysis and model testing. This study employs multivariate regression with the data of 339 observations. The research results reveal that five significant factors affect positively the price of apartments in Ho Chi Minh City - apartment area, toilet and bedroom, apartment floor, reference price, and apartment interior. Besides, there are three significant factors affecting negatively the price of apartments - next price trend, distance to city center, and potential building. From the results, the research proposes solutions in the pricing of apartments in the real estate market in Ho Chi Minh City - better information system, a real estate transaction index, and stricter management of small brokerage activities.

        Impact of Corporate Social Responsibility on Repurchase Intention: A Case Study in the FMCG Industry in Vietnam

        The study aims to evaluate the impact of corporate social responsibility on customers’ repurchase intention in Vietnam’s fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry. This study employs primary data surveyed from 417 Vietnamese consumers, and the sample is selected based on the willingness to participate in providing information. The results show corporate social responsibility’s positive impact on repurchase intention in the FMCG industry in the Vietnam market. There are three components of corporate social responsibility, including ethical responsibility, legal responsibility, and economic responsibility have a positive impact on repurchase intention. The economic responsibility component has the greatest effect on repurchase intention. There is not enough statistical basis for the philanthropic responsibility component of corporate social responsibility to recognize its impact on repurchase intention. The findings of this study suggest that companies dealing in the FMCG industry in Vietnam need to invest more in further developing their corporate social responsibility, it not only helps to improve their customer loyalty to businesses but also contributes to promoting the country’s economic and social development in a better and more sustainable direction.

      • Perceived Risk of Sharing Other People’s Information on Facebook: The Perspective of Young People in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

        In Vietnam, young people are gradually becoming the most accessible objects to social networks. With the development of technology, they usually use online social networks (ONS) as a tool to update information through multimedia content, which may contain other people s information. In different cases, other people s information will be shared and received for different purposes. Therefore, the risk is inevitable and may affect the privacy of individuals whose information is shared, causing turbulence in the community. This study aims to measure impact and find out the factors that influence the willingness of others to share information on social networks in Ho Chi Minh City by examining young people s perceptions that their activities on Facebook may be risky for other people s information. Besides that, the study proposes solutions to avoid possible risks when sharing information with others.

        The Effect of Local Foods on Tourists’ Recommendations and Revisit Intentions: The Case in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

        The study aims to investigate the recommendation and revisit intentions of foreign tourists in Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam through their satisfaction with local foods. The study proposed the group of five attributes for food image: taste, health concern, price, serving style, vendor/ restaurant staffs. The relationship between these attributes of food image and food satisfaction, as well as the one between food satisfaction and behavioral intentions were investigated. To ensure a high ratio of answers, a face-to-face survey was conducted in famous places at Ho Chi Minh city. Data with 210 foreign tourists. The study uses the methods of descriptive statistics, EFA, Cronbach Alpha and regression. The results showed that Five attributes of food image were chosen for the research, being taste, health concern, price, serving style and vendors/ restaurant staffs. All of these attributes showed a positive relationship with satisfaction. Among five factors, taste had the most impact on food satisfaction. Through the analysis of several attributes of food images, this study provides managerial implications for tourism marketers in researching the positive influence of food image on tourists' satisfaction which leads to their positive word-of-mouth and return to the tourism place.

        One-Pot Preparation of Antibacterial Electrospun Polycaprolactone Membrane Embedded with Gamma Irradiation-Induced Silver Nanoparticles

        In this study, we proposed a straightforward electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) loaded with silver nanoparticles (SNPs)membrane fabrication process, in which SNPs were directly synthesized from silver nitrate (AgNO3) in PCL–acetone mixtureby gamma irradiation. The insolubility of AgNO3in PCL solution was solved using an auxiliary dimethyl sulfoxide solvent. As a physical approach, gamma rays readily converted silver ions into SNPs without the addition of harmful reductionagents, which reduced the cytotoxicity of the synthesized material. By avoiding some processes such as purification, solventremoval, or redispersion of SNPs, this method was more time-saving compared to other related studies. SNPs formation wasconfirmed by both UV–Visible spectrum (UV–Vis) and X-ray diffraction analysis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)revealed that the addition of SNPs significantly reduced the fiber diameter of PCL–Ag membranes compared to that of rawPCL. Uniform spherical-shaped SNPs incorporated in PCL fibers were observed under transmission electron microscopy(TEM). The tensile test showed that the electrospun PCL–Ag membranes exhibited good mechanical characteristics. Moistureeasily penetrated the porous microstructure of PCL–Ag, facilitating wound humidity regulation. Inductively coupledplasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) was employed to study the release profiles of SNPs at different time intervals. Overall,the PCL–Ag 500 ppm sample exerted excellent antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcusaureus strains and low in vitro cytotoxicity.

        Factors Affecting Job Pursuit Intention in Hotel Industry in Ho Chi Minh, Viet Nam

        Given the rise in international tourism and the rapid growth of the Vietnamese economy, the hospitality industry in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s commercial hub, has been facing severe labor shortages due to competition with other fast-growing parts of the economy. These struggles to acquire high-quality employees is strangling future growth and placing new importance on the role of recruitment. To better understand the effectiveness of an organization’s recruitment strategy, recruiters need to ascertain the Job Pursuit Intention (JPI) of job seekers to efficiently align an applicant’s work notions with the organization’s goals. This study aims to investigate the factors impacting on JPI among employees working in the hotel sector in Ho Chi Minh City. Secondary data are from previous studies and primary data are from consultation with 10 experts, group discussions and five in-depths structured interviews with 15 random employees and 302 survey questionnaires with employees working in three five-star hotels. Cronbach’s Alpha, EFA, T-Test, ANOVA are used for statistical analysis. The findings show that compensation, career advancement, and work-life balance affect JPI of job seekers, in which compensation is the most influential factor. Furthermore, recommendations for recruiters, further research and limitations of this study have been laid out.
