Objective Central 5-HT1A receptor is involved in the modulation of sensorimotor gating function. However, its precise role is not clearly defined in developmentally social deprived (isolation rearing, IR) rats featured with impaired sensorimotor gating ability. We therefore aimed to examine the effects of 5HT1A activation on acoustic startle response (ASR) and prepulse inhibition (PPI) in IR rats in a condition of compromised presynaptic 5-HT functions. Methods Social control (SOC) and IR rats received an intracerebraoventricular (ICV) injection of 5-HT depletor, 5,7-DHT. Seven days later rats entered a protocol of 8-OH-DPAT, a 5-HT1A agonist, in which locomotor activity, ASR and PPI and their tissue levels of 5-HT were measured. Results Our results found that both IR and 5,7-DHT decreased the tissue concentration of 5-HT. IR-induced hyperactivity and gating impairment were unaffected by 5-HT depletion. 8-OH-DPAT strengthened the ASR in IR but not SOC rats and the drug-reduced PPI could be adjusted by 5,7-DHT pretreatment. 8-OH-DPAT at 100 μg/kg enhanced PPI in 5-HT-depleted SOC rats. However for IR rats, 8-OH-DPAT strengthened PPI in sham rats but downgraded it in depletion condition. Conclusion The integrity of central 5-HT system is important to 5-HT1A-modulated sensorimotor gating in isolation-reared rats.

“O Ghostly Treasure, O Ransomer and Redeemer!”: Economic Expressions in Everyman
( Denise Ming-yueh Wang ) 한국영어영문학회 2017 영어 영문학 Vol.63 No.1
Everyman is not a typical morality play as it lacks the broad humor of many morality plays that portray the vices as clowns that try to lure the Everyman figure away from salvation. What makes the play remarkable, undoubtedly, is the play`s economic language and concepts of wealth. Instead of humor, it is the play`s network of commercial lexicon that highlights the play`s distinction from other morality plays. Accordingly, this paper takes notice of the English writer`s use of the language of economy throughout two different systems of beliefs concerning wealth: the first is Everyman`s handling of his material goods, and the second is his debt to God. Our focus would be the language of purchase, of gift-giving, of lending, and of bookkeeping in Everyman so as to examine how the English dramatist makes use of the language of divine judgement and the language of trade to create the drama of Everyman`s reform and salvation. The key words, images and tropes are identical: reckoning and other commercial terms, account, the account book. This commercialism is in tension with the thesis of the play about worldly wealth, yet this is not surprising as medieval penitential manuals often use a commercial lexicon. But in Everyman, the divine economy operates in concert with the material economy so as to create the play`s larger structure of meaning: What should Everyman do with his money to save his soul? The moral of the play is interesting inasmuch as it insists that not God`s grace but charity works in the daily life are essential for salvation.
Chaucer’s Squire’s Tale in the Ellesmere Manuscript and Its Generic Problems
Denise Ming-yueh Wang 한국고전중세르네상스영문학회 2020 중세근세영문학 Vol.30 No.2
The Squire’s Tale has seemed to many readers an incomplete performance. The scribes of two of the earliest manuscripts, Ellesmere and Cambridge University Library MS Dd.4.24, evidently did think so, since they left part of a leaf blank where the Squire’s Tale breaks off, as if they suspected that their exemplars did not include Chaucer’s complete production. Thanks to the innovations of digital research, in our time, critical questions related to the Squire’s Tale, including its genre, order, date, and meaning, can be newly explored in and beyond medieval manuscript studies. This paper argues that the particular physical features of the Ellesmere Manuscript within which Chaucer’s Squire’s Tale is compiled and left incomplete can be better appreciated in terms of genre, namely, medieval English romance.
Ingmar Bergman’s Appropriations of the Images of Death in The Seventh Seal
Denise Ming-yueh Wang 한국중세근세영문학회 2009 중세르네상스 영문학 Vol.17 No.1
Death anxiety is central to the works of Ingmar Bergman, in particular The Seventh Seal. The Seventh Seal is about mortality, playing gingerly with the medieval images of death, namely the skull, the face of Christ, the procession of flagellations, the figure of Death, and the danse macabre. Yet, the Bergman scholarship in the past decades does not seem to take the film’s medieval tradition of ars moriendi, the art of dying well, very seriously, if it is aware of it at all. Explained away perhaps as a universal concern of death or a manifestation of a pre-modern religiosity, the film can be interpreted as doomsday metaphor and therefore be easily dismissed. This paper explores the film’s underlying question not only of the nature of death, but of the nature of life in realistic relationship to death in light of the medieval art of dying well. In a sense, the film serves as modern memento mori, a reminder of death and our mortality, which through regular contemplation of the transience of human existence should ideally lead us to prepare ourselves properly to meet death. Such an enquiry into the medieval tradition of ars moriendi and memento mori strives to open a new way to appraise the images of death that Bergman appropriates in his best-known medieval film.
GPU-Accelerated Single Image Depth Estimation with Color-Filtered Aperture
( Yueh-teng Hsu ),( Chun-chieh Chen ),( Shu-ming Tseng ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2014 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.8 No.3
There are two major ways to implement depth estimation, multiple image depth estimation and single image depth estimation, respectively. The former has a high hardware cost because it uses multiple cameras but it has a simple software algorithm. Conversely, the latter has a low hardware cost but the software algorithm is complex. One of the recent trends in this field is to make a system compact, or even portable, and to simplify the optical elements to be attached to the conventional camera. In this paper, we present an implementation of depth estimation with a single image using a graphics processing unit (GPU) in a desktop PC, and achieve real-time application via our evolutional algorithm and parallel processing technique, employing a compute shader. The methods greatly accelerate the compute-intensive implementation of depth estimation with a single view image from 0.003 frames per second (fps) (implemented in MATLAB) to 53 fps, which is almost twice the real-time standard of 30 fps. In the previous literature, to the best of our knowledge, no paper discusses the optimization of depth estimation using a single image, and the frame rate of our final result is better than that of previous studies using multiple images, whose frame rate is about 20fps.
Anti-tumor and Anti-inflammatory Activity of the Methanol Extracts from Adlay Bran
Ming-Yi Lee,Shu-Hsien Tsai,Yueh-Hsiung Kuo,Wenchang Chiang 한국식품과학회 2008 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.17 No.6
Adlay bran is a waste product previously thought to have no commercial value. Its methanolic extract was fractionated using n-hexane (ABM-Hex), ethyl acetate (ABM-EtOAc), 1-butanol (ABM-BuOH), and water (ABM-H₂O). The ABM-EtOAc fraction exhibited a strongest inhibition against growth of human lung cancer cell A549 and human colorectal carcinoma cells HT-29 and COLO 205. Inhibition of cell cycle progression at G?/G₁ transition, increase of cells at the sub-G1 phase, and DNA ladders were observed in cells treated with ABM-EtOAc. The ABM-BuOH fraction showed the strongest inhibition of proinflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interlukin (IL)-1β in stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. Further, ABM-EtOAc and ABM-BuOH inhibited cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 expression in A549 and HT-29 carcinoma cells, while COX-1 expression was not affected. These results reveal that both ABM-EtOAc and ABM-BuOH may aid the prevention of cancers and the applications in cancer chemotherapy.

Angiotensin II (Ang II) is a very important cardiovascular disease inducer and may cause cardiac pathological hypertrophy and remodeling. We evaluated a Chinese traditional medicine, alpinate oxyphyllae fructus (AOF), for therapeutic efficacy for treating Ang II-induced cardiac hypertrophy. AOF has been used to treat patients with various symptoms accompanying hypertension and cerebrovascular disorders in Korea. We investigated its protective effect against Ang II-induced cytoskeletal change and hypertrophy in H9c2 cells. The results showed that treating cells with Ang II resulted in pathological hypertrophy, such as increased expression of transcription factors NFAT-3/p-NFAT-3, hypertrophic response genes (atrial natriuretic peptide [ANP] and b-type natriuretic peptide [BNP]), and Gαq down-stream effectors (PLCβ3 and calcineurin). Pretreatment with AOF (60–100 μg/mL) led to significantly reduced hypertrophy. We also found that AOF pretreatment significantly suppressed the cardiac remodeling proteins, metalloproteinase (MMP9 and MMP2), and plasminogen activator, induced by Ang II challenge. In conclusion, we provide evidence that AOF protects against Ang II-induced pathological hypertrophy by specifically inhibiting the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) II/IIR-related signaling pathway in H9c2 cells. AOF might be a candidate for cardiac hypertrophy and ventricular remodeling prevention in chronic cardiovascular diseases.
