Reproduction is a complex physiological process that is regulated by multiple genes and pathways. Compared with studies of common livestock, fewer studies of genes related to the fertility of rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) have been reported, and the molecular mechanism of their high productivity is still poorly understood. To identify candidate genes associated with development and prolificacy in rabbits, we analyzed gene expression differences among the ovaries of mature Californian rabbit (LC), and mature (HH) and immature Harbin white rabbit (IH) using digital gene expression technology. We detected 885 and 321 genes that were significantly differentially expressed in comparisons between HH/IH and HH/LC, respectively. The functions of the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were determined by GO classification and KEGG pathway analysis. The results suggest that most of the DEGs between the mature and immature developmental stages were predominantly associated with DNA replication, cell cycle, and progesterone-mediated oocyte maturation, and most were up-regulated in the IH group compared with the HH group. The DEGs involved in disparate fecundities between HH and LC were associated with reproduction, fructose and mannose metabolism, steroid hormone biosynthesis, and pyruvate metabolism. Our results will contribute to a better understanding of changes in the regulatory network in ovary at different developmental stages and in different fertility of rabbit.
Determination of spalling strength of rock by incident waveform

An experimental technique for determining the spalling strength of rock-like materials under a high strain rate is developed. It is observed that the spalling strength of a specimen can be determined by only knowing the wavelength, loading peak value and length of the first spallation of an incident wave under a specific loading waveform. Using this method in combination with a split-Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) and other experimental devices, the spalling strength of granite specimens under a high strain rate is tested. Comparisons with other experimental results show that the new measuring method can accurately calculate the dynamic tensile strength of rock materials under a high strain rate.
A Fast Statistical Method for Chinese Unknown Word Detection

A fast statistical method for Chinese unknown word detection is proposed. It is based on association measure, heuristic features and LocalMaxs algorithm. The unknown words discovered are not limited to certain word patterns. It is also effective for low frequency unknown words and sensitive to new coming texts. Experiment shows its effectiveness.

Reactions of a crude enzyme extracted from S. pasteuri TS-82 to cleave carbon-carbon bonds in bicyclic and monocyclic carotenoid substrates were investigated. Dependencies of enzyme activities on processing temperature and pH were investigated and non-volatile and volatile breakdown products were characterized. The crude enzyme showed a maximum activity with zeaxanthin, followed in decreasing order by β-carotene, canthaxanthin, astaxanthin, and β-apo-8'- carotenal. The optimum pH value of the enzyme was 3.0 for both bicyclic and monocyclic substrates, whereas the optimum temperature of the enzyme was substrate specific at 60oC for C40 carotenoids and 50oC for β-apo-8'-carotenal. Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectra (LC-MS) and Gas Chromatography- Mass Spectra (GC-MS) indicated that the crude enzyme was able to catalyze substrates with cleavage at 9-10 and 9'-10' double bonds with C13 norisoprenoids being the main volatile reaction products in each case. Astaxanthin is a major source for α,β-dihydro-β-ionone.
Theoretical and numerical analysis of the influence of initial stress gradient on wave propagations

The investigation of stress wave propagation in a medium with initial stress has very important application in the field of engineering. However, the previous research less consider the influence of initial stress gradient on wave propagation. In the present paper, the governing equation of wave propagation in elastic continuum material with inhomogeneous initial stress is derived, which indicated that the inhomogeneous initial stress changed the governing equation of wave propagation. Additionally, the definite problem of wave propagation in material with initial stress gradient is verified by using mathematical physics method. Based on the definite problem, the elastic displacement-time relationship of wave propagation is explored, which indicated that the inhomogeneous initial stress changed waveform and relationship of displacement-time histories. Furthermore, the spall process of blasting wave propagation from underground to earth surface is simulated by using LS-DYNA.
Expression Profile and Potential Roles of EVA1A in Normal and Neoplastic Pancreatic Tissues

Background: EVA1A (eva-1 homolog A) is a novel gene that regulates programmed cell death through autophagy and apoptosis. Our objective was to investigate the expression profiles and potential role of EVA1A in normal and neoplastic human pancreatic tissues. Materials and Methods: The expression pattern of EVA1A in normal pancreatic tissue was examined by indirect immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy. Protein levels in paraffin-embedded specimens from normal and diseased pancreatic and matched non-tumor tissues were evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Results: EVA1A colocalized with glucagon but not with insulin, demonstrating production in islet alpha cells. Itwas strongly expressed in chronic pancreatitis, moderately or weakly expressed in the plasma membrane and cytoplasm in pancreatic acinar cell carcinoma, and absent in normal pancreatic acinar cells. Although the tissue architecture was deformed, EVA1A was absent in the alpha cells of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas, intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms, mucinous cystadenomas, solid papillary tumors and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. Conclusions: EVA1A protein is specifically expressed in islet alpha cells, suggesting it may play an important role in regulating alpha-cell function. The ectopic expression of EVA1A in pancreatic neoplasms may contribute to their pathogenesis and warrants further investigation.

Bacillus thuringiensis, an entomopathogenic bacterium belonging to the B. cereus group, harbors numerous extra-chromosomal DNA molecules whose sizes range from 2 to 250 kb. In this study, we used a plasmid capture system (PCS) to clone three small plasmids from B. thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki K1 using PCS which were not found in B. thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki HD-1, and determined the complete nucleotide sequence of plasmid pK1S-1 (5.5 kb). Of the six putative open reading frames (ORF2-ORF7) in pK1S-1, ORF2 (MobK1) showed approximately 90% aa identity with the Mob-proteins of pGI2 and pTX14-2, which are rolling circle replicating group VII (RCR group VII) plasmids from B. thuringiensis. In addition, a putative origin of transfer (oriT) showed 95.8% identity with those of pGI2 and pTX14-2. ORF3 (RepK1) showed relatively low aa identity (17.8-25.2%) with the Rep protein coded by RCR plasmids, however. The putative double-strand origin of replication (dso) and single-strand origin of replication (sso) of pK1S-1 exhibited approximately 70% and 64% identities with those of pGI2 and pTX14-2. ORF6 and 7 showed greater than 50% similarities with alkaline serine protease, which belongs to the subtilase family. The other 2 ORFs were identified as hypothetical proteins. To determine the replicon of pK1S-1, seven subclones were contructed in the B. t huringiensis ori-negative pHT1K vector and were electroporated into a plasmid cured B. thuringiensis strain. The 1.6 kb region that included the putative ORF3 (Rep1K), dso and ORF4, exhibited replication ability. These findings identified pK1S-1 as a new RCR group VII plasmid, and determined its replication region.
Efficiency Measurement of Selected International Ports using Aggregated Performance Index

In this paper, we propose the Aggregated Performance Index method. This study applies Aggregated Performance Index to provide an efficiency measurement for international ports. The Aggregated Performance Index technique is powerful in resolving the measurement of port efficiency and ranking of port, because Aggregated Performance Index has been applied to analyze the relative efficiency of decision-making units (DMUs) in a set of multiple inputs and multiple outputs, and don`t require an explicit a priori determination of relationships between outputs and inputs. Using multidimensional scaling (MD5) process, we adjustment and present an alternative that is theoretically and practically superior to the most common methods proposed in the past papers, especially in the D MUs measure field. This method overcomes the problem of Data Envelopment Analysis method which can neither rank efficiency of ports nor show the real efficiency distance of DMUs. Thus, the Aggregated Performance Index method is useful in wide array of Australian and other international ports` ranking. Finally this Aggregated Performance Index method is applied to the ranking of 16 international ports. As a result, five ports, the port of Melbourne, the port of Osaka, the port of Zeebrugge, the port of Brisbane, and the port of Fremantle are found to be the most inefficient ports. Six other international ports, the port of Tanjung Priok, the port of Hamburg, the port of Sydney, the port of Tilbury, the port of Yokohama, and the port of La Spezia, which are found to be efficient ports. The port of Singapore, the port of Hong Kong, the port of Felixstowe, the port of Rotterdam, and the port of Keelung are found to be the most efficient ports.
