백남준의 ‘포스트-미디어 조건’과 DJ로서의 예술가 - 헤르민 프리드의 《백남준》 비평에 대한 반론 -

백남준은 ‘비디오 아트의 아버지’로 불리며 미디어 아트 전개에 핵심적 역할을 한 인물로 알려졌지만, 초기부터 다양한 비판에 부딪혀왔다. 그중에는 그의 작업을 조각적 문맥으로 보는 일면성을 근거로 비디오 아티스트로 볼 수 없다는 주장도 있다. 본 연구는 1982년 휘트니미술관(Whitney Museum of American Art, 뉴욕)에서 열린 백남준 최초의 회고전 《백남준(NAM JUNE PAIK)》의 헤르민 프리드 비평 「백남준 회고전(Nam June Paik Retrospective)」을 이 주장의 구체적인 예로 삼았다. 프리드가 백남준을 조각적 측면에서 “텔레비전 아티스트(television artist)”라고 부르며 이미지 콜라주를 이미지 "재활용(recycle)”이라고 지적한 것으로부터 반론을 진전시켰다. 그의 비판을 현재 시점에서 다시 점검하고자 로잘린드 크라우스, 피터 바이벨, 니콜라 부리오의 포스트-미디어 비평을 통해 살펴보았다. 로잘린드 크라우스와 피터 바이벨의 매체를 바라보는 시각 변화를 담은 ‘"포스트-미디어 조건"(Post-Media Conditions)’에 의해 백남준은 “텔레비전 아티스트”에서 탈출했다. 그리고 니콜라 부리오의 이미지 “"재활용"”으로 동시대 미술에서 DJ로서의 예술가 역할의 선구자가 됐다. 이러한 시도에 의해 프리드가 다수의 문제가 존재하는 작품으로 언급한 < 글로벌 그루브(Global Groove) >(1973)를 재생하는 < TV 정원(TV Garden) >(1974)을 백남준의 중요성을 강조하는 작품으로 변모시켰다. 이 과정에서 우리는 현시대에 그를 바라볼 때 ‘매체특정성(Medium Specificity)’과 ‘원본성(Originality)’보다는 새로운 해석을 위한 열린 개념과 태도가 필요한 것임을 알 수 있었다. 이 연구는 나아가 백남준의 작품세계가 인간과 비인간이 공존하는 지금 펼쳐지는 융·복합적 세상을 실천하기 위한 초석일 뿐만 아니라 미래의 사유를 펼쳐낸다는 것을 확인하게 한다. Nam June Paik, recognized as a father of video art, left his footprint in the development of media art. However, he has been criticized for being named a video artist because his artworks have some sculptural aspects. This study finds the beginning of this criticism from “Nam June Paik Retrospective,” written by Hermine Freed, in response to Nam Jue Paik’s first retrospective at the Whitney Museum in 1982. Furthermore, it develops its discussion through the post-media theories of Rosalind Krauss, Peter Weibel, and Nicholas Bourriaud by focusing on Freed’s comments of “television artist” and image “recycling.” Rosalind Krauss and Peter Weibel’s post-media perspective to see a medium extricates Paik from “television artist.” Moreover, Nicholas Bourriaud’s awareness of an artist’s new role as a Dj in contemporary art emphasizes Paik’s pioneering importance. This study proposes Paik’s artworks, especially TV Garden(1974~1978), as a place where the open concepts and attitudes are prevailed by the above post-media theories despite Freed’s criticism. Nam June Paik’s artworks present a new vision and role of artists and people of contemporary life amid the pandemic. Open concepts and attitudes are now over media specificity and originality for aiming coexistence of human, machine, and nature.

c-Jun N-terminal kinase 1 (JNK1) phosphorylates OTX2 transcription factor that regulates early retinal development

Background The transcription factor orthodenticle homeobox 2 (OTX2) has critical functions in brain and eye development, and its mutations in humans are related to retinal diseases, such as ocular coloboma and microphthalmia. However, the regulatory mechanisms of OTX2 are poorly identified. Objective The identification of JNK1 as an OTX2 regulatory protein through the protein interaction and phosphorylation. Methods To identify the binding partner of OTX2, we performed co-immunoprecipitation and detected with a pooled antibody that targeted effective kinases. The protein interaction between JNK1 and OTX2 was identified with the co-immunoprecipitation and immunocytochemistry. In vivo and in vitro kinase assay of JNK1 was performed to detect the phosphorylation of OTX2 by JNK1. Results JNK1 directly interacted with OTX2 through the transactivation domain at the c-terminal region. The protein–protein interaction and co-localization between JNK1 and OTX2 were further validated in the developing P0 mouse retina. In addition, we confirmed that the inactivation of JNK1 K55N mutant significantly reduced the JNK1-mediated phosphorylation of OTX2 by performing an immune complex protein kinase assay. Conclusion c-Jun N-terminal kinase 1 (JNK1) phosphorylates OTX2 transcription factor through the protein–protein interaction.

17세기 이후 실존 인물을 제재로 한 설(說)의 특징

한문산문 說에서 ‘人物’은 주제를 드러내기 위한 題材로 쓰인다. 즉, 인물이 없어도 說에서 주제를 전달하는 데에는 큰 무리가 없다. 그럼에도 논설류 산문 중에서 유독 설은 인물을 제재로 하는 작품이 많다. 문체의 특성상 인물을 제재로 삼을 수밖에 없는 서사문학과 傳狀類·碑誌類·哀祭類를 제외하면, 역사 인물을 비롯하여 실존 및 허구 인물 등 다양한 유형의 인물을 제재로 삼는 한문산문은 說이 압도적으로 많다. 이처럼 설에서 인물이 갖는 위상이 다른 문체에 비해 특별하다면, 인물을 제재로 한 설의 양상을 살펴보는 것은 설 작품을 이해하는 데 도움이 될 것이다. 작품에 나타난 인물의 태도와 행적, 가치관은 특정 시기의 역사적 삶을 보여주며, 이를 선택하고 描出한 작가의 일정한 가치와 태도를 대변하기 때문이다. 『한국문집총간』을 대상으로 실존 인물을 제재로 한 설을 살펴보니, 이는 크게 독특한 인물을 발견하여 특정 주제를 강조하는 경우와, 인물을 통해 세태를 고발하고 사회를 비판하는 경우로 나뉘었다. 두 경우가 혼용되는 경우도 있었다. 대부분의 작품들은 인물의 행적을 재구하는 것에 초점을 두지 않고, ‘작가의 인물 관찰’이나 ‘작가와 인물의 문답’을 통해 주제를 전달하고 있었다. 그러나 17세기 이후 실존 인물을 제재로 한 설은 3인칭의 관점에서 인물의 구체적인 행적을 재구했다. 또한 서사를 의도적으로 연장해 주제를 효과적으로 전달했으며, 숭상과 추모를 목적으로 인물의 전기적 서술을 시도했다. 이는 17세기 산문 경향과 연결된다. 17세기에는 상황의 생생한 묘사와 인간 중심의 구체적 모습을 산문에 드러내고, 인간의 생애를 조명한 비지류 산문 창작이 늘어났기 때문이다. 이를 통해 조선후기 설은 이전보다 주제와 창작 목적, 서술 방식 등이 좀 더 확장되고 다양해졌다고 할 수 있다. A ‘character’ in a literary work is a person with a specific personality who leads an event or shows the theme of a work through words and actions. In Sŏl, ‘character’ is used as a material for the theme. The original Sŏl doesn’t necessarily need characters. This is because Sŏl is rhetorical writing. Nevertheless, Sŏl often use fictional characters, real people and historical figures as material, except for novle and Jŏn(傳) that require characters in. If the status of the characters in Sŏl is special compared to other classical chinese prose, it will be helpful to understand the works of Sŏl by examining the aspects of Sŏl with the characters. This is because the attitudes, traces, and values of the characters described in the work show the historical life of a specific period and represent the values and attitudes of the writer who chose them. First of all, this paper outlines the characteristics of the real people in the Sŏl. The real people is not historical figures. This can be broadly divided into the case of emphasizing a specific theme by discovering a unique person, and the case of accusing the social conditions and criticizing society through the real people. In both cases, the focus was not on reconstructing the character’ trace. In these cases, the theme was expressed through the writer observing the person or the writer talking to the person. However, after the 17th century, in the Sŏl that used real people as material, the narrative was intentionally extended to effectively express the theme. And by reconstructing the specific trace of the real people, it has probability. Also, the Sŏl of this period attempted to describe a real person’s biography for the purpose of veneration and remembrance. This is connected with the prose trends of the 17th century. In the 17th century, prose revealed vivid descriptions of the situation and a more real person-centered description. There was also an increase in Epitaph prose that focused on human life. In conclusion, it can be said that the Sŏl of the late Chosŏn have more expanded and diversified the themes, creative purposes, and narrative methods than before.

Interpreting in situ Soil Water Characteristics Curve under Different Paddy Soil Types Using Undisturbed Lysimeter with Soil Sensor

The soil water characteristics curve (SWCC) represents the relation between soil water potential and soil water content. The shape and range of SWCC according to the relation could vary depending on soil characteristics. The objective of the study was to estimate SWCC depending on soil types and layers and to analyze the trend among them. To accomplish this goal, the unsaturated three soils were considered: silty clay loam, loam, and sandy loam soils. Weighable lysimeters were used for exactly measuring soil water content and soil water potential. Two fitting models, van Genuchten and Campbell, were applied. Two models entirely fitted well the measured SWCC, indicating low RMSE and high R² values. However, the large difference between the measured and the estimated was found at the 30 cm layer of the silty clay loam soil, and the gap was wider as soil water potential increased. In addition, the non-linear decrease of soil water content according to the increase of soil water potential tended to be more distinct in the sandy loam soil and at the 10 cm layer than in the silty clay loam soil and at the lower layers. These might be seen due to the various factors such as not only pore size distribution, but also cracks by high clay content and plow pan layers by compaction. This study clearly showed difficulty in the estimation of SWCC by such kind of factors.

The Clinical Effects of Dendropanax Morbifera on Postmenopausal Symptoms: Review Article

Postmenopausal women aged 50s generally experience gradual changes in body such as decline in antioxidant and estrogen levels as the body ages. To overcome these aging-associated changes, the needs for health functional foods are increasing. Dendropanax morbifera (DM) have antioxidant effects, anti-inflammatory against cancer cells, antidiabetic, and antiatherogenic effect which are associated with postmenopausal symptoms. We analyzed clinical effects of DM on aging-related symptoms by reporting their antioxidant, anticancer and inflammatory activity, etc. and their bioactivity. Data sources EMBASE, SCOPUS, PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases were searched up to August 2016 for studies investigating medicinal plants in prevention and treatment of diabetes. The search terms were “Dendropanax morbifera”. The reference lists of articles were also reviewed for additional relevant studies. Extracts of DM have various efficacy such as antioxidant, anti-cancer, antiinflammatory activity and anti-thrombotic effect. (J Menopausal Med 2017;23:146-155)
