Plants are being recognized as promising hosts for molecular farming and several molecular tools have been developed over the last two decades to optimize recombinant protein yields. However, the effects of basic growth factors on protein yield have been much less studied. Here, we investigated the effects of supplemental light emitting diode (LED) inter-lighting, CO2enrichment, and plant density on growth and recombinant protein yield of Nicotiana benthamiana used as a host to express the vaccine antigen influenza virus hemagglutinin H1. LED inter-lighting improved plant growth and recombinant protein yield on a per-plant basis. CO2 enrichment also enhanced plant growth, but its effect on recombinant protein yield was not significant. By comparison, high plant density decreased recombinant protein production per plant, mainly because of its negative impact on protein accumulation on a per-plant basis. On a whole-crop area basis, supplemental lighting, CO2 enrichment, and high plant density improved plant growth, while only LED inter-lighting and high plant density positively impacted recombinant protein yield. We suggest that LED inter-lighting and an elevated plant density should be used to maximize H1 antigen yield in large-scale protein production systems using N. benthamiana.
Double controller of wind induced bending oscillations in telecom towers

Wind induced large bending oscillation amplitudes in tall and slender telecommunication steel towers may lead to precocious fatigue cracks and consequent risk of collapse of these structures, many of them installed in rural areas alongside highways and in highly populated urban areas. Varying stress amplitudes at hot spots may be attenuated by means of passive control mechanical devices installed in the tower. This paper gives an account of both mathematical-numerical model and the technique applied to design and evaluate the performance of a double controller installed in existing towers which is composed by a nonlinear pendulum and a novel type of passive controller described herein as a planar motion disk mounted on shear springs. Results of experimental measurements carried out on two slender tubular steel towers under wind action demonstrate the efficiency of the double controllers in attenuating the towers bending oscillation amplitudes and consequent stress amplitudes extending the towers fatigue life.

The present research was designed to examine the effects of Millennial women’s past fashion experiences and gender identity on both online and offline support of a luxury fashion show from a cause-related social media perspective, while investigating the specific relative effects of manipulating the promotion of the fashion products and of the charitable cause. A Conditional Process Model proposed a direct effect of Millennial women’s history of fashion experiences on their online and offline support of a fashion show. Female gender identity was proposed as a mediator of this direct eff ect and the Facebook event page appeal (augmented cause versus augmented fashion) as the moderator. The participants were ( N = 218) female Millennials at a Canadian university business school. Data collection was conducted online in two phases using Qualtrics. Gender identity was found to be an important predictor of online and offl ine support of a fashion show promoted on Facebook. It also signifi cantly mediated any eff ect of Millennial women’s past fashion experiences on this event support. Also, compared to a normal product-oriented Facebook appeal, one that included an emotional link to the cause produced greater online and offline support for the fashion show and attracted a wider clientele. This unique online study of digitally savvy and socially conscious Millennial women can inform both fashion businesses and non-profit organizations of the mutual advantages of ensuring an adequate emphasis on the cause in their cause-related fashion marketing. It also brings to light the importance of addressing social media communication to characteristics of female gender identity.

Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia is associated with high mortality and morbidity, requiring prompt and appropriate antimicrobial treatment. Therefore, it is important to detect methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) rapidly from blood cultures. Two immunochromatographic tests, BinaxNow S. aureus and BinaxNow PBP2a, were directly applied to 79 Bact/Alert bottles that were positive for Gram positive cocci in cluster aggregations. Sensitivity and specificity for the identification of S. aureus and determination of methicillin resistance were 94% and 87%, and 100% and 100%, respectively, with less than 30 min of performance time. These tests are efficient and rapid; these tests are valuable alternatives to more sophisticated and expensive methods used in the diagnosis of MRSA bacteremia.
Clothing purchase behavior and the Canadian household life cycle
Anne-Marie Germain,Serge Carrier,Miche`le Beaudoin 한국마케팅과학회 2014 Journal of Global Fashion Marketing Vol.5 No.2
The first intention of this research is to test ifWells and Gubar’smodel (1966) of consumer behavior, based on the life cycle, still explains the Canadian population’s consumption behavior. A second objective, if warranted, is to determine the possibility to segment the Canadian population based on life cycles with the aim of explaining garment/apparel consumption. Using the Survey of Household Spending from Statistics Canada (2009), this article analyses total clothing expenditures and their subcategories of expenses for women and girls, men and boys, and children. Each expense is analyzed using two different data: (1) gross amount of money spent annually and (2) percentage of the category on household total spending. The three hypotheses of this research are validated, confirming (H1) the non-representativeness of Wells and Gubar’s model; (H2) the importance of integrating single households in the life-cycle model since their purchase behaviors are significantly different from those of traditional households; (H3) the possibility to segment based on life-cycle criteria to better understand Canadian realities.
Effects of Garlic Fractions Consumption on Male Reproductive Functions

Many researchers have focused on the preventive and curative effects of garlic (Allium sativum), particularly on cardiovascular diseases and cancer. However, its impacts on the male reproductive system have not been clearly defined. In this study, the effect of chronic consumption of two garlic fractions was tested: one soluble in water (aqueous solution obtained by grinding and centrifugation) and the other one precipitated by ethanol (alcoholic precipitate obtained by precipitation of the aqueous solution), on different variables of male rats’ reproductive functions. These two fractions were targeted to try to identify the nature of the active garlic compounds responsible for the different modifications observed on testicular parameters. The observation of seminiferous tubules of rats treated with garlic fractions showed an increased number of tubules deprived of spermatozoa. In addition, garlic fractions induced apoptosis of testicular germ cells (TdTmediated dUTP-X nick-end labeling [TUNEL] approach) and a decrease of serum testosterone levels and seminiferous tubule DNA concentrations. In summary, our histological and molecular results suggest that one or several substances, soluble in water and precipitated by alcohol, impaired spermatogenesis.
