      • Australia's Handling of Tensions between Islam and the West under the Howard Government

Michális S. Michael 서울대학교행정대학원 2009 Asian Journal of Political Science Vol.17 No.1

This article examines the impact of international conflicts involving the Muslim worldupon Australia’s multicultural society by studying the Howard government’s responses totensions between Islam and the West since September 11. Specifically, it surveys theHoward government’s participation in the ‘War on Terror’, other aspects of Australia’sforeign and security policies, including the relationship with the United States, theemergence of immigration and refugee flows as national security issues, and thesubsequent impact of all this on multiculturalism and in particular on Australia’sMuslim community. At a broader level, the article challenges the argument that foreignpolicy is inconsequential for social policy, intercommunal, inter-ethnic and inter-religiousrelations. The internalization of the ‘War on Terror’ has reinforced a negative portrayalof Islam and Muslims in Australia by blurring the dividing line between ‘Islam’ on theone hand and ‘extremism’ and ‘terrorism’ on the other. The evidence suggests thatgovernment statements and policies, more generally had provoked apprehension amongsta wide cross-section of the Australian Muslim community. A major finding of this articleis that unless care is taken, it is not inconceivable that the hitherto harmoniousrelationship between Muslims and other sections of Australia’s community could beunnecessarily endangered.

Double controller of wind induced bending oscillations in telecom towers

        Ronaldo C. Battista,Michèle S. Pfeil,Eliane M.L. Carvalho,Wendell D. Varela 국제구조공학회 2018 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.21 No.1

Wind induced large bending oscillation amplitudes in tall and slender telecommunication steel towers may lead to precocious fatigue cracks and consequent risk of collapse of these structures, many of them installed in rural areas alongside highways and in highly populated urban areas. Varying stress amplitudes at hot spots may be attenuated by means of passive control mechanical devices installed in the tower. This paper gives an account of both mathematical-numerical model and the technique applied to design and evaluate the performance of a double controller installed in existing towers which is composed by a nonlinear pendulum and a novel type of passive controller described herein as a planar motion disk mounted on shear springs. Results of experimental measurements carried out on two slender tubular steel towers under wind action demonstrate the efficiency of the double controllers in attenuating the towers bending oscillation amplitudes and consequent stress amplitudes extending the towers fatigue life.

Effects of CO2 enrichment, LED inter-lighting, and high plant density on growth of Nicotiana benthamiana used as a host to express influenza virus hemagglutinin H1

        Lingling Shang,Linda Gaudreau,Michèle Martel,Dominique Michaud,Steeve Pepin,André Gosselin 한국원예학회 2018 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.59 No.5

Plants are being recognized as promising hosts for molecular farming and several molecular tools have been developed over the last two decades to optimize recombinant protein yields. However, the effects of basic growth factors on protein yield have been much less studied. Here, we investigated the effects of supplemental light emitting diode (LED) inter-lighting, CO2enrichment, and plant density on growth and recombinant protein yield of Nicotiana benthamiana used as a host to express the vaccine antigen influenza virus hemagglutinin H1. LED inter-lighting improved plant growth and recombinant protein yield on a per-plant basis. CO2 enrichment also enhanced plant growth, but its effect on recombinant protein yield was not significant. By comparison, high plant density decreased recombinant protein production per plant, mainly because of its negative impact on protein accumulation on a per-plant basis. On a whole-crop area basis, supplemental lighting, CO2 enrichment, and high plant density improved plant growth, while only LED inter-lighting and high plant density positively impacted recombinant protein yield. We suggest that LED inter-lighting and an elevated plant density should be used to maximize H1 antigen yield in large-scale protein production systems using N. benthamiana.

      • Real time stereo vision system for axial motion detection

        BENSRHAIR, A,MOUSSET, S.,MICHÉ,Lee, Sang-Goog 경북대학교 센서기술연구소 1998 센서技術學術大會論文集 Vol.9 No.1

In this paper, we present a new real time axial motion system which is based on a new stereo vision system. The first step of the stereo process uses a mono-dimensional operator called declivity, then a dynamic programming method is used to match declivities and finally a 3-D map is achieved. Then, a detection estimation-structure is used to compute motion with a low level computing for an image point. Finally, we use the neighbourhood information of the image point with morphology operation in order to compute motion maps. These maps are established with a constant computation time without spatio-temporal matching. Experimental results obtained on real images are presented.

Gaining Millennial women’s support for a fashion show: Infl uence of fashion experiences, gender identity and cause-related Facebook appeals

        Aela Salman,Ronald J. Ferguson,Michèle Paul,Kaspar Schattke 한국마케팅과학회 2016 Journal of Global Fashion Marketing Vol.7 No.2

The present research was designed to examine the effects of Millennial women’s past fashion experiences and gender identity on both online and offline support of a luxury fashion show from a cause-related social media perspective, while investigating the specific relative effects of manipulating the promotion of the fashion products and of the charitable cause. A Conditional Process Model proposed a direct effect of Millennial women’s history of fashion experiences on their online and offline support of a fashion show. Female gender identity was proposed as a mediator of this direct eff ect and the Facebook event page appeal (augmented cause versus augmented fashion) as the moderator. The participants were ( N = 218) female Millennials at a Canadian university business school. Data collection was conducted online in two phases using Qualtrics. Gender identity was found to be an important predictor of online and offl ine support of a fashion show promoted on Facebook. It also signifi cantly mediated any eff ect of Millennial women’s past fashion experiences on this event support. Also, compared to a normal product-oriented Facebook appeal, one that included an emotional link to the cause produced greater online and offline support for the fashion show and attracted a wider clientele. This unique online study of digitally savvy and socially conscious Millennial women can inform both fashion businesses and non-profit organizations of the mutual advantages of ensuring an adequate emphasis on the cause in their cause-related fashion marketing. It also brings to light the importance of addressing social media communication to characteristics of female gender identity.

3D reconstruction and visualization from 2D X-ray CT images in the study of ceramic membrane microstructure

        Thomasová Barbora,Thomas Jan,Souček Kamil,Michálek Ondřej,Gembalová Lucie 한양대학교 세라믹연구소 2020 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.21 No.6

In the presented study, X-ray computed tomography (CT) technique was used to visualize the three-dimensional (3D)microstructure of ceramic membrane support made of alternative material - fly ash, kaolin and shale. Standard computedtomography output formats provide usually two-dimensional (2D) information about the object being studied in the form ofimage data set. However, to understand the material internal structure and its mechanical, physicochemical and hydraulicproperties 3D visualization is needed. Our work shows that 3D image data reconstruction can be done with freely availableDREAM.3D and ParaView software instead of costly commercial ones allowing wider community data sharing and greaterfreedom in processing. The resulting 3D model was suitable for quantitative pore space analysis and fluid dynamics modellingand provided important morphological information such as pore and mass shape, cracks, spatial distribution and theconnectivity of the solid matrix.

Direct Identification of Staphylococcus aureus and Determination of Methicillin Susceptibility From Positive Blood-Culture Bottles in a Bact/ALERT System Using Binax Now S. aureus and PBP2a Tests

        Sandrine Heraud,Anne-Marie Freydiere,Anne Doleans-Jordheim,Michèle Bes,Anne Tristan,François Vandenesch,Frederic Laurent,,Olivier Dauwalder 대한진단검사의학회 2015 Annals of Laboratory Medicine Vol.35 No.4

Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia is associated with high mortality and morbidity, requiring prompt and appropriate antimicrobial treatment. Therefore, it is important to detect methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) rapidly from blood cultures. Two immunochromatographic tests, BinaxNow S. aureus and BinaxNow PBP2a, were directly applied to 79 Bact/Alert bottles that were positive for Gram positive cocci in cluster aggregations. Sensitivity and specificity for the identification of S. aureus and determination of methicillin resistance were 94% and 87%, and 100% and 100%, respectively, with less than 30 min of performance time. These tests are efficient and rapid; these tests are valuable alternatives to more sophisticated and expensive methods used in the diagnosis of MRSA bacteremia.

Seismic and vibration tests for assessing the effectiveness of GFRP for retrofitting masonry structures

        Michelis, Paul,Papadimitriou, Costas,Karaiskos, Grigoris K.,Papadioti, Dimitra-Christina,Fuggini, Clemente Techno-Press 2012 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.9 No.3

Full-scale shake table seismic experiments and low-amplitude vibration tests on a masonry building are carried out to assess its seismic performance as well as study the effectiveness of a new multifunctional textile material for retrofitting masonry structures against earthquakes. The un-reinforced and the retrofitted with glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) strips masonry building was subjected to a series of earthquake excitations of increasing magnitude in order to progressively induce various small, moderate and severe levels of damage to the masonry walls. The performance of the original and retrofitted building states is evaluated. Changes in the dynamic characteristics (lowest four modal frequencies and damping ratios) of the building are used to assess and quantify the damage states of the masonry walls. For this, the dynamic modal characteristics of the structure states after each earthquake event were estimated by performing low-amplitude impulse hammer and sine-sweep forced vibration tests. Comparisons between the modal results calculated using traditional accelerometers and those using Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors embedded in the reinforcing textile were carried on to investigate the reliability and accuracy of FBG sensors in tracking the dynamic behaviour of the building. The retrofitting actions restored the stiffness characteristics of the reinforced masonry structure to the levels of the original undamaged un-reinforced structure. The results show that despite a similar dynamic behavior identified, corresponding to reduction of the modal frequencies, the un-reinforced masonry building was severely damaged, while the reinforced masonry building was able to withstand, without visual damage, the induced strong seismic excitations. The applied GFRP reinforcement architecture for one storey buildings was experimentally proven reliable for the most severe earthquake accelerations. It was easily placed in a short time and it is a cost effective solution (covering only 20% of the external wall surfaces) when compared to the cost for full wall coverage by GFRPs.
