Endodontic treatment of mandibular molar with root dilaceration using Reciproc single-file system

Meireles, Daniely Amorin,Bastos, Mariana Mena Barreto,Marques, Andre Augusto Franco,Garcia, Lucas Da Fonseca Roberti,Sponchiado, Emilio Carlos Junior The Korean Academy of Conservative Dentistry 2013 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.38 No.3

Biomechanical preparation of root canals with accentuated curvature is challenging. New rotatory systems, such as Reciproc, require a shorter period of time to prepare curved canals, and became a viable alternative for endodontic treatment of teeth with root dilaceration. Thus, this study aimed to report a clinical case of endodontic therapy of root with accentuated dilaceration using Reciproc single-file system. Mandibular right second molar was diagnosed as asymptomatic irreversible pulpitis. Pulp chamber access was performed, and glide path was created with #10 K-file (Dentsply Maillefer) and PathFile #13, #16 and #19 (Dentsply Maillefer) up to the temporary working length. The working length measured corresponded to 20 mm in the mesio-buccal and mesio-lingual canals, and 22 mm in the distal canal. The R25 file (VDW GmbH) was used in all the canals for instrumentation and final preparation, followed by filling with Reciproc gutta-percha cones (VDW GmbH) and AH Plus sealer (Dentsply Maillefer), using thermal compaction technique. The case has been receiving follow-up for 6 mon and no painful symptomatology or periapical lesions have been found. Despite the difficulties, the treatment could be performed in a shorter period of time than the conventional methods.

        Diana Meireles,João Gomes,Lara Lopes,Mariana Hinzmann,Jorge Machado 경희대학교 융합한의과학연구소 2020 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.20 No.4

Moringa oleifera L. from the Moringaceae family is a perennial tree widely cultivated in many tropic regions and easily grown even in adverse conditions. M. oleifera is also known as the miracle tree, which for centuries has been indicated for traditional medicine. With no reports of side effects, in doses achievable by ingestion, different parts of M. oleifera is used to treat several conditions, such as malnutrition, diabetes, blindness, anemia, hypertension, stress, depression, skin, arthritis, joints and kidney stones disorders. This plant also showed capacity of helping in maintenance of the cardiovascular system health, blood-glucose levels and providing anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer activity as well as the regulation of urinary tract and lactation in nursing women. The seed and leaves powder has water purification properties through flocculation. It also supplements the food in the human diet and in the fortification of livestock feed, especially in developing countries. So, M. oleifera properties have also been applied to cosmetic and byproducts industries due to the high nutritive and protective properties of its seed oil. According to the holistic or traditional medicine, M. oleifera has very relevant therapeutic properties and applications depending on the constitution, somatic and psychological needs of patients. It is usually referred as a natural product that can treat different physical and psychological health aspects, offering an energetic action and structural rebuilder of the body and promoting emotions of highly positive attitudes towards life. The high and specific immunological potential of M. oleifera leads us to suggest an in-depth study to assess the hypothesis of conferring a supportive effect against Covid-19 disease.

Pathological fracture induced by Halicephalobus gingivalis (Nematoda: Rhabditida) in a horse limb

Ticiana Meireles Sousa,Hugo Shisei Toma,Antonio de Pádua Lima,Antonio Carlos Cunha Lacreta Junior,Maira Meira Nunes,Ana Paula Cassiano da Silva,Daniel Wouters,Adriana Silva Albuquerque,Mary Suzan Vara 대한기생충학ㆍ열대의학회 2024 The Korean Journal of Parasitology Vol.62 No.1

Halicephalobus gingivalis is a free-living nematode that occasionally causes infections inhorses. We report a rare case of limb fracture of horse caused by infection with H. gingivalis. An 8-year-old mare was referred to the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal Universityof Lavras with claudication grade 5 of the right hind limb, that had been started 3months ago. The patient had aseptic arthritis in the tarsal joint and edema that extendedto the quartile. The radiographic examination showed punctate osteolysis with exacerbation of bone trabeculation along the calcaneus, talus, proximal epiphysis of the thirdmetatarsal and distal epiphysis of the tibia. Treatment for arthritis was initiated, and theanimal showed a slight improvement in limb function. However, 21 days after hospitalization, due to a comminuted fracture of the tibia, it was euthanized. At necropsy, yellowish masses were found from the metatarsal to the tibia, and around the tarsal bonesand joint. Similar masses were also found in the left kidney. Numerous nematodes compatible with H. gingivalis were identified. This is the first description of a pathologicalfracture caused by H. gingivalis infection in an equine limb.

Antioxidant and Antimycobacterial Activities of Tabernaemontana catharinensis Extracts Obtained by Supercritical CO2 + Cosolvent

        M. Angela A. Meireles,Camila G. Pereira,Patr?ia F. Leal,Daisy N. Sato 한국식품영양과학회 2005 Journal of medicinal food Vol.8 No.4

In the present work the antioxidant and antimycobacterial activities were determined for extracts from Taber-naemontana catharinensis. The extracts’ global yields were obtained using supercritical CO2 plus cosolvent. The cosolventsethanol, isopropyl alcohol, methanol, and water and their mixtures were used. The extracts were fractionated and analyzed bythin-layer chromatography and gas chromatography/flame ionization detection. The antimycobacterial activity was measuredagainst Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Mycobacterium avium, and Mycobacterium kansasii. The antioxidant activity was de-termined by the coupled reaction of .-carotene and limonene acid. The average global yield was approximately constant(2.4. 0.1%) for the alcoholic cosolvents and significantly larger (15. 1%) for the cosolvent water and its alcoholic mix-tures. The content of alkaloids in the extracts was strongly affected by the cosolvent. The antioxidant activity of the extractsranged from 53% to 95%. The highest antimycobacterial activity was detected in the alkaloidal fraction (minimum inhibitoryconcentration. 128 .g/mL), while the lowest was verified in the aqueous fraction (minimum inhibitory concentration . 512.g/mL).

Maitake (D Fraction) Mushroom Extract Induces Apoptosis in Breast Cancer Cells by BAK-1 Gene Activation

        Raquel Soares,Manuela Meireles,Ana Rocha,Ana Pirraco,Diego Obiol,Eliana Alonso,Gisela Joos,Gabriela Balogh 한국식품영양과학회 2011 Journal of medicinal food Vol.14 No.6

For many years mushrooms have been used empirically in traditional medicine to treat several diseases. Study of the maitake mushroom, with its immunomodulatory and antitumoral properties, has led to the isolation of several bioactive compounds. One of these, D fraction, is known to reduce tumor cell viability. This study examined the effect of isolated D fraction on viability and apoptosis of human breast cancer cells (MCF7). These cells were treated with maitake (D fraction) extract at 18 μg/mL, 36 μg/mL, 91 μg/mL, 183 μg/mL, or 367 μg/mL or were left untreated (control) for 24 hours. MCF7 incubation with the maitake extract resulted in decreased cell viability [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium assay] in a dose-dependent manner. Apoptosis was statistically significantly increased in a dose-dependent manner at every concentration tested (terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate nick-end labeling assay). Upon incubation with D fraction, a microarray assay revealed upregulation of BAK-1 and cytochrome c transcripts, 2 proteins directly involved in the apoptotic pathway. Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction studies confirmed these findings; BAK-1 was one of most overexpressed gene, as observed by microarray assay. These findings confirm the apoptotic effect of maitake D fraction in breast cancer cells and further highlight the involvement of cytochrome c release to the cytoplasm. Cytoplasmic release of cytochrome c, another player in the apoptotic pathway, was also increased after incubation with D fraction in a dose-dependent manner. This finding indicates that the effect of this compound involves mitochondrial dysfunction. The identification of the molecular mechanisms by which D fraction exerts its effects is crucial for the development of preventive and therapeutic strategies for cancer.

Comparison of Outcomes in Immediate ImplantBased Breast Reconstruction: Acellular Dermal Matrix versus Inferior Dermal Flap

        Mata Ribeiro Luís,Meireles Rita P.,Brito Irís M.,Costa Patrícia M.,Rebelo Marco A.,Barbosa Rui F.,Choupina Miguel P.,Pinho Carlos J.,Ribeiro Matilde P. 대한성형외과학회 2022 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.49 No.2

Background Implant-based breast reconstruction has evolved tremendously in the last decades, mainly due to the development of new products and techniques that make the procedure safer and more reliable. The purpose of this study was to compare the outcomes in immediate one-stage breast reconstruction between acellular dermal matrix (ADM) and inferior dermal flap (IDF).Methods We conducted a retrospective comparative study of patients submitted to immediate breast reconstructions with an anatomical implant and ADM or IDF in a single center between 2016 and 2018. Outcomes evaluated included major complications, early complications, reinterventions, readmissions, and reconstruction failure. Simple descriptive statistics and univariate analysis were performed. Results A total of 118 breast reconstructions (85 patients) were included in the analysis. Patients in the IDF group had a higher body mass index (median = 27.0) than patients in the ADM group (median = 24). There were no statistically significant differences among both groups regarding immediate major complication, early complications, readmissions, and reinterventions. Conclusion There are no significant differences in complications between the ADM and IDF approach to immediate implant breast reconstruction. In patients with higher body mass index and large, ptotic breasts, we recommend an immediate implant reconstruction with IDF.

Effect of ultrasonic tip designs on intraradicular post removal

Aguiar, Anny Carine Barros,de Meireles, Daniely Amorim,Marques, Andre Augusto Franco,Sponchiado, Emilio Carlos Junior,Garrido, Angela Delfina Bitencourt,Garcia, Lucas Da Fonseca Roberti The Korean Academy of Conservative Dentistry 2014 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.39 No.4

Objectives: To evaluate the effect of different ultrasonic tip designs on intraradicular post removal. Materials and Methods: The crowns of forty human canine teeth were removed, and after biomechanical preparation and filling, the roots were embedded in acrylic resin blocks. The post spaces were made, and root canal molding was performed with self-cured acrylic resin. After casting (Cu-Al), the posts were cemented with zinc phosphate cement. The specimens were randomly separated into 4 groups (n = 10), as follows: G1 - no ultrasonic vibration (control); G2 - ultrasonic vibration using an elongated cylindrical-shaped and active rounded tip; G3 - ultrasonic vibration with a flattened convex and linear active tip; G4 - ultrasonic vibration with active semicircular tapered tip. Ultrasonic vibration was applied for 15 seconds on each post surface and tensile test was performed in a Universal Testing Machine (Instron 4444 - 1 mm/min). Results: G4 presented the highest mean values, however, with no statistically significant difference in comparison to G3 (p > 0.05). G2 presented the lowest mean values with statistically significant difference to G3 and G4 (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Ultrasonic vibration with elongated cylindrical-shaped and active rounded tip was most effective in reducing force required for intraradicular post removal.
