The photoluminescence (PL) spectra from p-type a-porous silicon carbides prepared under UV photo-assisted process and under dark-current condition are investigated in detail. Emission bands with peak energies of 2.35, 2.50, 2.70, and 3.43 are resolved. The PL stability in tune and the PL difference arising from different tuning excitation energies are studied. It is found that the PL spectra of the a-porous silicon carbide depend strongly on the preparation conditions for electrochemical etching. The PL spectrum of the sample prepared under photo-assisted process has an enhancement on the lower-energy side of the emission; on the contray, another one under dark-current condition has an enhancement at the higher energy side, and the former stability is better than the latter one, and the latter PL intensity decreases with the increase of the time in the air. The reasons about these differences are discussed.

<P> Effects of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL), l-α-stearoyl-lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), on intracellular Ca<SUP>2</SUP> concentration were examined in mouse endothelial cells by measuring intracellular Ca<SUP>2</SUP> concentration ([Ca<SUP>2</SUP>]<SUB>i</SUB>) with fura 2-AM and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). LPC increased [Ca<SUP>2</SUP>]<SUB>i</SUB> under the condition of 1.5 mM [Ca<SUP>2</SUP>]<SUB>o</SUB> but did not show any effect under the nominally Ca<SUP>2</SUP>-free condition. Even after the store depletion with 30μM 2,5-di-tert- butylhydroquinone (BHQ) or 30μM ATP, LPC could still increase the [Ca<SUP>2</SUP>]<SUB>i</SUB> under the condition of 1.5 mM [Ca<SUP>2</SUP>]<SUB>o</SUB>. The time required to increase [Ca<SUP>2</SUP>]<SUB>i</SUB> (about 1 minute) was longer than that for ATP-induced [Ca<SUP>2</SUP>]<SUB>i</SUB> increase (10∼30 seconds). LPC-induced [Ca<SUP>2</SUP>]<SUB>i</SUB> increase was completely blocked by 1μM La<SUP>3</SUP>. Transient receptor potential channel(trpc) 4 mRNA was detected with RT-PCR. From these results, we suggest that LPC increased [Ca<SUP>2</SUP>]<SUB>i</SUB> via the increase of Ca<SUP>2</SUP> influx through the Ca<SUP>2</SUP> routes which exist in the plasma membrane.

Dendritic cell (DC) activator, thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) induces DCs to produce Th2-attracting chemokines, causing differentiation of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells into effector cells. The differentiated cells are characterized by a typical pro-allergic phenotype. In this study, we identified four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and one variation site (g.-305delT) from the results of scanned human TSLP gene. The SNPs are as following: g.-1914A>G and g.-847C>T in promoter, g.-82C>T in 5` UTR and g.1117C>T in intron 2. We also evaluated the association of genotype and allele frequencies of these SNPs between non-allergic rhinitis controls and allergic rhinitis patients. We further investigated possible correlations between each genotype with serum total IgE levels and peripheral blood eosinophil counts in allergic rhinitis patients. The frequencies of haplotype constructed by these SNPs between these two groups were also compared. Our results demonstrate the two SNPs (g.-1914A>G and g.-847C>T) were associated with susceptibility of allergic rhinitis (P=0.006 and P=0.015 respectively), however, serum total IgE levels were not significantly related with the SNPs.
Stimulation of keratinocyte differentiation by extract of combined medicinal plant

Skin is the outermost organ and acts as a barrier between the organism and environment. Skin protects the organism from environmental insults, such as chemicals, pathogens, and UV light. Much of the protective function of skin is dependent on the epidermis, a multi-layered epithelium that is composed of various cell types such as keratinocytes and melanocytes. Keratinocytes produce protective components through a sophisticated differentiation process. Disturbance of keratinocyte differentiation is related to several skin diseases such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. In this study, we prepared extract of combined medicinal plants (ECMP) consisting of Taraxacum platycarpum H. Dahlstedt, Heartleaf Houttuynia, Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer, and root bark of Ulmus davidiana. We demonstrated that ECMP enhanced keratinocyte differentiation and barrier functionality using an in vitro cell culture system and in vivo animal test. Treatment of cultured keratinocytes with ECMP resulted in induction of keratinocyte differentiation, as evidenced by increased differentiation markers such as involucrin, loricrin, and filaggrin. In line with these results, ECMP decreased proliferation of keratinocytes cultured in vitro. ECMP applied topically to tape-stripped mouse skins accelerated reduction of transepidermal water loss (TEWL), indicating fast recovery of barrier function. Immunohistochemistry showed that ECMP increased the filaggrin level in tape-stripped mouse skins. These results suggest that ECMP may be applicable for keratinocyte differentiation-related skin diseases.

Cuchulain and Emer as Yeatsian Hero and Heroine in His Cuchulain Plays

이 논문의 목적은 쿠헐런 연작극의 두 주인공인 쿠헐런과 그의 아내 이 머를 연구하는 것이다. 두 인물은 고대 아일랜드 신화의 영웅들이다. 고대 얼스터 지 방의 영웅 쿠헐런은 예이츠 희곡에서 가장 중요한 인물로서 개인적으로 이상적 영웅 의 상징일 뿐만 아니라 그가 현대 아일랜드인에게 모델로 제시하고자 한 민족적 영웅 이었다. 예이츠는 쿠헐런 연작극에서 영웅의 면모를 보여주고 있다. 『매의 우물에서』는 불굴의 도전정신을, 『녹색 투구』에서는 부족을 위한 사심 없는 용기와 헌신을, 『발 야의 해변에서』에서는 영웅적 이상과 반영웅적 세계 사이의 갈등을, 『이머의 단 한 번 질투』에서는 이머의 진정한 사랑과 희생을, 『쿠헐런의 죽음』에서는 죽음의 공포를 초월하는 영웅의 모습을 보여주고 있다. 영웅의 아내 이머는 두 연적에 비해 영웅의 아 내로서 훨씬 더 자격이 있다. 판보다 더 남편에게 충실하고, 잉구바보다 더 용기가 있 다. 무엇보다도 남편의 생환을 위해 사랑을 포기함으로써 이머는 영웅의 이상적인 배 우자임을 증명한다. 이 두 중심인물을 분석함으로써 예이츠의 영웅주의의 본질과 그들 을 통해 예이츠가 현대 아일랜드 국민에게 무엇을 제시하려고 했는가를 알 수 있다. Yeats’s play Sophocles’ Oedipus King implies the spirit of the times. Social idealism and artistic orientation of Yeats’s era focus on absurdity to overcome the taboos faced by Oedipus. The ethical taboos and social absurdities of the society Yeats and Sophocles lived are in contrast. Despite the age differences between the two societies, Yeats is focusing on overcoming ethical taboos and artistic philosophical absurdities through Oedipus. The name-calling of forgotten heroes, an artistic absurdity, implies an existential art philosophy that transcends the foundation of sexuality and violence. Such a meeting with Yeats’s artistic soul is valuable in that it is a spiritual conversion technique that awakens people to head toward future ideals beyond the sensuous taboos of reality.

Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation causes DNA base modifications. One of these changes leads to the generation of 8-oxoguanine (8- oxoG) due to oxidative stress. In human skin, this modification may induce sunburn, inflammation, and aging and may ultimately result in cancer. We investigated whether phloroglucinol (1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene), by enhancing the expression and activity of 8-oxoG DNA glycosylase 1 (Ogg1), had an effect on the capacity of UVB-exposed human HaCaT keratinocytes to repair oxidative DNA damage. Here, the effects of phloroglucinol were investigated using a luciferase activity assay, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reactions, western blot analysis, and a chromatin immunoprecipitation assay. Phloroglucinol restored Ogg1 activity and decreased the formation of 8-oxoG in UVB-exposed cells. Moreover, phloroglucinol increased Ogg1 transcription and protein expression, counteracting the UVB-induced reduction in Ogg1 levels. Phloroglucinol also enhanced the nuclear translocation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) as well as Nrf2 binding to an antioxidant response element located in the Ogg1 gene promoter. UVB exposure inhibited the phosphorylation of protein kinase B (PKB or Akt) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (Erk), two major enzymes involved in cell protection against oxidative stress, regulating the activity of Nrf2. Akt and Erk phosphorylation was restored by phloroglucinol in the UVB-exposed keratinocytes. These results indicated that phloroglucinol attenuated UVB-induced 8-oxoG formation in keratinocytes via an Akt/Erk-dependent, Nrf2/Ogg1-mediated signaling pathway.

Skin aging is the most readily observable process involved in human aging. Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation causes photo-oxidation via generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby damaging the nucleus and cytoplasm of skin cells and ultimately leading to cell death. Recent studies have shown that high levels of solar UVB irradiation induce the synthesis of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in skin fibroblasts, causing photo-aging and tumor progression. The MMP family is involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normal physiological processes such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in disease processes such as arthritis and metastasis. We investigated the effect of diphlorethohydroxycarmalol (DPHC) against damage induced by UVB radiation in human skin keratinocytes. In UVB-irradiated cells, DPHC significantly reduced expression of MMP mRNA and protein, as well as activation of MMPs. Furthermore, DPHC reduced phosphorylation of ERK and JNK, which act upstream of c-Fos and c-Jun, respectively; consequently, DPHC inhibited the expression of c-Fos and c-Jun, which are key components of activator protein-1 (AP-1, up-regulator of MMPs). Additionally, DPHC abolished the DNA-binding activity of AP-1, and thereby prevented AP-1-mediated transcriptional activation. These data demonstrate that by inactivating ERK and JNK, DPHC inhibits induction of MMPs triggered by UVB radiation.
